Rating: 4.20
Based on 5 Owner Reviews
Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2020 Mercedes-Benz Metris is a mid-size van designed for both commercial and personal use. Its compact dimensions, relative to full-size vans, make it easier to maneuver in urban environments. Available as a cargo van or passenger van (Worker, Metris Passenger, Metris Cargo), it offers versatility. The Metris's model years span from 2016 to 2023 (in the US market). The pricing range new was roughly $30,000 to $40,000+, depending on configuration. It stands out due to its Mercedes-Benz pedigree, offering a more refined driving experience and robust build quality compared to some competitors.
The Good

The 2020 Metris offers a blend of practicality and Mercedes-Benz refinement. Its turbocharged engine provides adequate performance for daily tasks. While not known for exceptional reliability, it offers acceptable durability with proper maintenance. Comfort levels are decent, especially in passenger configurations. Its design, while utilitarian, is clean and functional. The Metris delivers reasonable fuel efficiency for its class. The Mercedes-Benz badge offers prestige, appealing to emotional buyers, while its versatility appeals to practical buyers.

The Bad

The 2020 Metris has some potential weaknesses. Reliability can be a concern, with some owners reporting issues with the electrical system, sliding door mechanisms, and transmission. The interior, while functional, can feel basic compared to Mercedes-Benz passenger cars. Some may find the ride quality firm. The turning radius can also be wider than expected for a mid-size van. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than domestic vans.

What Problems Does the 2020 Mercedes-Benz Metris Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2020 Mercedes-Benz Metris, and across its model years in general, often revolve around a few key areas. Electrical system glitches, including issues with sensors and the infotainment system, are commonly reported. Sliding door malfunctions, such as difficulties opening or closing smoothly, are also a recurring concern. Some owners have experienced transmission issues, ranging from rough shifting to more significant failures. Premature wear of brake components has also been noted.
Recalls have been issued for the Metris for various reasons, including issues with fuel pumps, airbags, and steering components. It's crucial to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any active recalls affecting the specific VIN of a used Metris you are considering.
Long-term reliability can be a concern, particularly with higher mileage examples. The cost of replacement parts and specialized labor for Mercedes-Benz vehicles can be higher than for domestic vans, leading to potentially expensive repairs. Preventive maintenance and adherence to the recommended service schedule are essential to mitigate potential problems and extend the vehicle's lifespan. Some owners have also reported issues with the air conditioning system over time. It is also worth noting that early model years (2016-2018) had more reported issues than later years, suggesting some improvements were made over time.

How long will the 2020 Mercedes-Benz Metris last?

With proper maintenance, a 2020 Mercedes-Benz Metris can reasonably be expected to provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles of service, potentially more with meticulous care. Years of service can extend beyond 10 years, depending on usage. Long-term durability can be affected by factors like driving conditions (city vs. highway), load weight, and adherence to service intervals. Weaknesses over time tend to be related to electrical components, the transmission, and suspension wear. Rust can also be a concern in areas with harsh winter conditions and road salt. Regular fluid changes, brake inspections, and addressing any warning lights promptly are crucial for maximizing longevity.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz Metris offers a reasonable array of built-in tech and safety features for its class. The standard infotainment system includes a basic audio system with Bluetooth connectivity. Higher trims and optional packages add features such as a 7-inch touchscreen display, navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto compatibility.
Standard driver-assistance features include Crosswind Assist and Load-Adaptive Electronic Stability Program (ESP). Optional driver-assistance features, depending on the trim and packages selected, include Blind Spot Monitoring, Lane Keeping Assist, parking sensors (front and rear), and a rearview camera (standard). Attention Assist, which monitors driver alertness, is also typically included.
Safety features include multiple airbags, anti-lock brakes, and traction control. Crash test ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) for the 2020 Metris are somewhat limited, but the van has generally performed adequately in available tests. The structural integrity of the Metris provides a degree of inherent safety. It's essential to research specific crash test results for the 2020 model year to get a comprehensive understanding of its safety performance. The availability of optional safety features can significantly enhance occupant protection.

2020 Mercedes-Benz Metris Prices and Market Value

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz Metris had a starting MSRP of around $30,000 for the base cargo van, with higher trims and optional features pushing the price towards $40,000 or more. Current used market prices vary depending on mileage, condition, and trim, but typically range from the mid-$20,000s to the low-$30,000s. Depreciation is relatively moderate compared to some other vehicles, but factors like high mileage, accident history, and lack of maintenance records can negatively impact resale value. The demand for cargo and passenger vans also influences pricing, with well-maintained examples holding their value better.

2020 Mercedes-Benz Metris Cost of Ownership

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz Metris tends to be more costly to own compared to domestic vans. Insurance rates can be higher due to the Mercedes-Benz badge. Fuel economy is reasonable for its class. Maintenance and repair costs are the biggest factor, as parts and labor tend to be more expensive. Long-term ownership costs can be significant due to potential repairs and specialized service requirements. While fuel isn't excessively high, the potential for expensive repairs makes it less economical overall. Budgeting for potential maintenance is essential.

2020 Mercedes-Benz Metris Insurance

Insurance for a 2020 Mercedes-Benz Metris is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Van with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2020 Mercedes-Benz Metris Compare to Other Van?

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz Metris competes with vans like the Ford Transit Connect, Ram ProMaster City, and Nissan NV200. In terms of performance, the Metris's turbocharged engine offers a good balance of power and fuel economy, though it might not feel as robust as some larger vans. Feature-wise, the Metris offers comparable tech and safety options, especially in higher trims. However, reliability is a significant point of differentiation; the Ford Transit Connect and Ram ProMaster City are often perceived as more reliable, while the Nissan NV200 is generally less expensive but also less refined.
Price-wise, the Metris typically commands a premium over its competitors, reflecting its Mercedes-Benz branding and perceived build quality. However, that premium doesn't always translate to superior reliability. If reliability is a top priority and budget is a concern, the Ford Transit Connect is a strong alternative. The Ram ProMaster City also offers a compelling blend of practicality and affordability. If you need a van primarily for city use and are looking for the most compact option, the Nissan NV200 could be considered, but be aware of its limitations in power and features.

Final Verdict: Is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz Metris a Good Van?

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz Metris is ideal for businesses or individuals who need a mid-size van that offers a blend of maneuverability, cargo capacity, and a touch of Mercedes-Benz refinement. It's worth buying if you value the brand, appreciate the driving experience, and are prepared for potentially higher maintenance costs. A used Metris can be a good value, but a thorough inspection and a comprehensive vehicle history report are essential. Opting for a later model year (e.g., 2020 or newer) or a higher trim level with more features may enhance the overall ownership experience. Consider the Transit Connect if reliability is paramount and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection.

Great Cargo Van

Purchased new a month ago, very active weather since. Driven to NYC in snowstorm and over the mountains to Pittsburgh in ice storm. Handling and stability were awesome considering such a high profile vehicle. A lot of active safety and stability features. Interior appointments and infotech could be more up to date, but the basics (Bluetooth and USB) are there- acceptable as its mission as a cargo van. Plenty of payload and towing capacity for its size- quite maneuverable and serviceable with rear wheel drive. Low end torque for confident acceleration. Cloth seats with manual adjustments are comfortable, a lot of hard plastics-as expected in a work van. Got a good price, great trade in offer, and a low APR with MB Financial. MB is making a push to promote their truck lines in the USA with their new Charleston plant, they will give Ford a run for their money.
