The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2018 Tesla Model X include build quality issues, particularly with the Falcon Wing doors and panel gaps. What Problems Does the 2018 Tesla Model X Have?

The 2018 Tesla Model X has faced a number of frequently reported problems. Falcon Wing door malfunctions are common, including sensor issues that prevent proper opening or closing. Build quality inconsistencies, such as misaligned panels and issues with interior trim, are also frequently cited. Suspension problems, specifically with the air suspension system, have been reported, leading to costly repairs. The large touchscreen display is prone to issues, including freezing, lagging, and complete failure.
Recalls have been issued for various issues, including seatbelt problems, power steering issues, and potential problems with the touchscreen. These recalls are important to check and address. Long-term reliability is a concern, as some owners have experienced battery degradation over time, reducing the vehicle's range. Regular software updates are essential, but can sometimes introduce new bugs or exacerbate existing problems. The 2018 model year shares many of the same issues as other Model X years, particularly with the Falcon Wing doors and air suspension, so thorough inspection and a comprehensive warranty are recommended when considering a used Model X.

How long will the 2018 Tesla Model X last?

Based on owner data, a 2018 Tesla Model X can be expected to last for 200,000 miles or more with good maintenance. Years of service can extend beyond 10 years, but this heavily depends on battery health and usage patterns. Key to longevity are battery care (avoiding extreme charging habits), regular software updates, and prompt addressing of mechanical issues. Over time, battery degradation will reduce range, and suspension components, particularly the air suspension, may require costly repairs. The Falcon Wing doors remain a potential long-term weak point.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2018 Tesla Model X boasts impressive built-in tech. Its centerpiece is the massive 17-inch touchscreen, controlling almost all vehicle functions, including navigation, climate control, and entertainment. Entertainment features include streaming music and video services (subscription required) and internet connectivity. Driver-assistance features are extensive, including standard Autopilot with adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking. Enhanced Autopilot (optional) adds features like automatic lane changes and parking assist. Full Self-Driving Capability (optional, but not fully autonomous) adds further features such as navigate on Autopilot.
Safety features include multiple airbags, electronic stability control, and traction control. The Model X also features advanced safety technologies like blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) awarded the 2018 Tesla Model X a 5-star overall safety rating. IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings may vary. Optional features included premium audio systems, upgraded interior trim, and a smart air suspension. Over-the-air software updates continuously enhance the vehicle's functionality and safety.

2018 Tesla Model X Prices and Market Value

The 2018 Tesla Model X had a new MSRP ranging from approximately $80,000 to over $140,000, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices typically range from $40,000 to $70,000, depending on mileage, condition, and battery health. Depreciation is significant but slower than some other luxury SUVs. Factors affecting resale value include battery condition, Autopilot features, mileage, and overall condition. Models with lower mileage, good battery health, and upgraded Autopilot packages command higher prices. The presence of a transferable warranty also increases value.

2018 Tesla Model X Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2018 Tesla Model X can be higher than average due to its high value and complex technology. Fuel costs (electricity) are significantly lower than gasoline vehicles. Maintenance is generally less frequent, but repairs can be costly due to specialized parts and labor. Long-term ownership costs can be moderate, but unexpected repairs (especially related to the battery or Falcon Wing doors) can make it expensive. It is neither the most economical nor the most costly vehicle to own in its class.

2018 Tesla Model X Insurance

Insurance for a 2018 Tesla Model X is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2018 Tesla Model X Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2018 Tesla Model X competes with other luxury SUVs like the Audi e-tron, Jaguar I-Pace, and BMW X5. In terms of performance, the Model X offers quicker acceleration than most competitors, especially in P100D trim. Its features are cutting-edge, particularly its Autopilot system, although competitors are catching up. Reliability is a major drawback compared to established brands like Audi and BMW, which generally have fewer reported issues. The Model X's price is competitive within the luxury EV segment, but its long-term cost can be uncertain due to potential repairs.
Alternatives to the Model X include the Audi e-tron for its comfortable ride and traditional luxury, the Jaguar I-Pace for its sporty handling, and the BMW X5 xDrive40e (plug-in hybrid) for a blend of electric and gasoline power. The Mercedes-Benz GLE is another alternative, offering a luxurious interior and advanced technology, though without the all-electric range. If reliability is a top priority, a non-Tesla option might be a better choice. Consider the Volvo XC90 Recharge for a stylish and reliable plug-in hybrid SUV.

Final Verdict: Is the 2018 Tesla Model X a Good Wagon?

The 2018 Tesla Model X is ideal for tech enthusiasts and those seeking a high-performance, spacious electric SUV. It's worth buying if you value acceleration, advanced technology, and don't mind potential reliability issues. Consider buying used, but only after a thorough inspection by a qualified technician, focusing on battery health, suspension, and Falcon Wing door functionality. A model with a transferable warranty is highly desirable. The 100D offers a good balance of range and performance. Be prepared for potentially higher repair costs compared to traditional luxury SUVs.

Apart from no knowing what servicing has been done on the

Apart from no knowing what servicing has been done on the car before I bought it from TESLA! It's been okay two drives to UK from Norway the car has 150.000 Kms. They hadn't checked recalls, but fixed the front driveshafts & Suspension arms (recall). Nice bunch at Tesla Trondheim. Overall very happy with them, not so much with Tesla Skøyen in Oslo who were terrible.

THIS LEMON IS AS RELIABLE AS A SWISS CHEESE CONDOM

I hate loathe despise my piece of crap and I say this because I probably can’t curse on this site and plan to put reviews on every reliable site I can. This is how feed up I am with this rat mobile so others will be warned. I constantly have thoughts of what’s going to break down next week or month? This is not what you want to think of for any car and this is without a doubt the WORST I’ve every owned in terms of reliability and service which I will elaborate. The worst car I’ve ever owned in terms of reliability is the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee which is no longer made for obvious reasons. What makes this Tesla worse is not the reliability but the scheduling of service. You cannot talk to a live person, everything is done on Tesla APP and scheduling could take 2-3 weeks if you’re lucky they don’t cancel on you and keep rescheduling. At least with the Jeep I got it fixed anywhere anytime. My Tesla model suX is practically at in the Tesla service shop every month or 2 months when I can get scheduled. Oddly I don’t even speed much or drive it hard. The issues I’ve had which I can remember are: Side mirrors not working $565 Front passenger door wont open $146 Control arms replacement around 50K $1500 HEPA filter replacement $919 Small battery change, not the big one but a small one $243 Constant software issues Charging fuel latch won’t open $400 Rear balancing after eating my new Continental tires at 12,000 @ $275 Both rear trunk buttons won’t work $95 As of 07/11/2022 the car wont even charge now!! How insane is that???? Haven’t gotten repair price for this yet. This car gets lots of looks and saves on gas for sure but TRUST ME it doesn’t make the worst reliable car list on several reports for no reason. I don’t think the S 3 or Y have the same issues as the X but be forewarned: stay away from this LEMON unless you plan endure lots of time bringing it to Tesla’s service center.

A car unlike any other in a great way

A car that almost drives itself. Very luxurious and smooth ride. Wicked quick acceleration even in standard model. Technology is far better than any other luxury car I’ve owned. Over the air updates are frequent and sometimes get cool upgrades without buying a new car. The base model comes with practically everything included unlike my Cayenne or Range Rover. Low maintenance at almost no cost. I’ve used mobile service a couple of times which is convenient. I’m a huge fan!

Amazing piece of technology

This car has it all, performance, style, comfort, technology... Driving this car has been awesome, but not as awesome as letting this car drive me! Autopilot is amazing and always getting better. So cool to have the software on the car update and provide new features. The technology in this car is better than any other out there. You would not regret owning Tesla.

Awesomest SUV ever. Drive it, and you will see.

Greatest vehicle I have ever owned. Smooth ride, great navigation, no oil changes, no radiator fluid, no leaks in your garage, only need to go for service once a year, and then you get a loaner for that visit. Always ready, and it drives itself on the interstate? Crazy awesome.

Awesome!

When you pass the gas pump you can justify paying a premium for this car! Super fun to drive, handles well and looks good too!

That Tesla you always wanted at a price you like

This car you want to own. It's a Tesla the car of the future right now. Drives itself on the freeway. Parks itself and is a joy to drive and ride in.

Nothing else compares

I’ve owned many vehicles and nothing compares to a Tesla. The self driving feature is a must, the technology is unparalleled, the quality is better than European vehicles. It’s sleek, fast and most importantly it’s good for our planet! Drive one and you will buy one.....

Fastest most reliable car I've owned

Hard to go back to gas once you have had electric. This is extremely well made and extraordinarily fast. I've had Ferraris , Porsches, Land Rovers, Lexus, Corvette, Mercedes and others that don't hold a candle to the Tesla. Speed comfort and no maintenance required except tires. Best value as a recent used car.

Have a Charger at HOME!

I have my Model X for a year and half now, I love driving it, I've had all the nice brands for the SUVs, BMW, MB, Porsche, LandRover... and the Model X is different from all, very fast and the autopilot is something else. The only downside is that if you drive a lot like I do, it's kinda of a pain in the xxx to charge it every 2 days... I use the superchargers from Tesla, once I have the Unlimited Free charge forever... And my building doesn't have chargers, neither I want to pay to charge it!
