What Problems Does the 2017 Tesla Model X Have?

The 2017 Tesla Model X has a history of reported problems and reliability concerns. Frequently reported issues include problems with the Falcon Wing doors, such as sensors malfunctioning, slow operation, and difficulty opening or closing in tight spaces. Build quality is another common complaint, with reports of misaligned panels, paint imperfections, and interior trim issues. Electronic glitches, particularly with the large touchscreen display and associated systems, are also common.
Recalls have been issued for various issues, including problems with the seat belts, parking brake, and potential issues with the front motor. Long-term reliability is a significant concern. Battery degradation is a natural process in electric vehicles, and the Model X is no exception. While Tesla's battery management system is advanced, some owners have reported noticeable range reduction over time. Drivetrain issues, including problems with the motor and axles, have also been reported. Due to the complexity of the vehicle's systems and the reliance on Tesla-specific parts, repairs can be expensive and time-consuming. Overall, potential buyers should be aware of these potential issues and consider a thorough inspection before purchasing a used 2017 Model X.

How long will the 2017 Tesla Model X last?

A 2017 Tesla Model X, with proper maintenance, could reasonably provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-12 years of service. However, this is heavily dependent on maintenance habits and driving conditions. Long-term durability is affected by battery degradation, which will reduce range over time. Weaknesses include potential issues with the Falcon Wing doors, suspension components, and electronic control units. Keeping up with software updates and addressing issues promptly is critical for longevity. Battery health monitoring and proactive maintenance can help maximize its lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2017 Tesla Model X boasts impressive built-in tech. The centerpiece is the 17-inch touchscreen, controlling most vehicle functions, including navigation, climate control, and entertainment. Entertainment features include streaming music, internet radio, and a web browser. Driver-assistance features are prominent, with standard Autopilot including adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking. Optional Enhanced Autopilot adds features like automatic lane changes and parking assist.
Safety features include multiple airbags, stability control, traction control, and blind-spot monitoring. The Model X also offers a high level of passive safety due to its robust construction. Optional features include a premium audio system and upgraded interior materials. Crash-test ratings from NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) are generally good, although specific ratings may vary. The Model X is designed with safety in mind, incorporating features to help prevent accidents and protect occupants in the event of a collision. The Autopilot system, while advanced, requires driver attention and is not a substitute for safe driving practices.

2017 Tesla Model X Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2017 Tesla Model X ranged from approximately $80,000 to over $150,000, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices vary significantly based on mileage, condition, and battery health, typically ranging from $40,000 to $70,000. Depreciation is influenced by factors such as battery condition, accident history, and the availability of newer Tesla models. Lower mileage examples with good battery health command higher resale values. The demand for electric vehicles and the Tesla brand influence resale prices, but potential maintenance costs and reliability concerns can negatively impact value.

2017 Tesla Model X Cost of Ownership

The 2017 Tesla Model X can be costly to own. Insurance premiums are typically higher than average due to the vehicle's value and repair costs. "Fuel" costs (electricity) are lower than gasoline, but charging costs vary. Maintenance is relatively low compared to combustion engine vehicles, but repairs, especially involving the battery or electronics, can be expensive. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on battery health and potential repairs. While electricity costs are lower, overall, the Model X is generally not considered economical to own due to high initial cost, insurance, and potential repair expenses.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2017 Tesla Model X Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2017 Tesla Model X competes with luxury SUVs like the Audi e-tron, Jaguar I-PACE, and BMW X5. In terms of performance, the Model X excels with its rapid acceleration and instant torque. It also has a significant advantage in terms of access to Tesla's Supercharger network. Features are comparable, with all offering advanced technology and driver-assistance systems. However, the Model X often falls short in terms of reliability and build quality compared to German rivals like Audi and BMW.
The price point is similar among these vehicles when new, but the used market may offer better deals on some competitors. For similar alternatives with better reliability, consider the Audi e-tron or Jaguar I-PACE, although their range and charging infrastructure may not match Tesla's. The BMW X5 xDrive40e (plug-in hybrid) offers a blend of electric and gasoline power but lacks the all-electric range of the Model X. Ultimately, the choice depends on prioritizing performance, features, reliability, and charging convenience. If reliability is a top concern, the German alternatives are worth considering.

Final Verdict: Is the 2017 Tesla Model X a Good Wagon?

The 2017 Tesla Model X is ideal for tech enthusiasts and those prioritizing performance and electric driving experience. It's worth buying used if you are comfortable with potential reliability issues and high repair costs. Look for models with well-maintained battery health and a thorough pre-purchase inspection. Specific trims like the 100D offer a good balance of range and performance. Buying new may be preferable for warranty coverage and peace of mind, but the 2017 Model X offers a significant price advantage on the used market. Consider extended warranty options to mitigate potential repair costs. If reliability is a primary concern, explore alternative luxury electric SUVs.

Excellent car--have over 38,000 miles on it.

Only minor problems with only one maintance/repair/upgrade visit just recently (2020) at a Tesla SC, 1.5 days in the shop. All other minor problems handled by an excellent mobile Tesla tech that comes to your house (a special service for those not near a SC). No drivetrain problems whatsoever. 1/3 the maintenance cost of an ICE vehicle, no gas cost. Gas net savings about $5,0000 over 5 years. This is an SUV with moderate dirt road capability and 9" ground clearance.

Love of my life

Most comfortable and most exciting car I have ever owned. The falcon-wing doors are amazingly practical! In tight spaces where the conventional front doors can barely open, the FW doors lift up and out, making exit much more comfortable; plus, on rainy days, they act like awnings - wonderful for attending to children in the rear seats.

Does it all AND electric!

Roomy, designed well and capable. Lots of bells and whistles but all very intuitive to use. Handles well, tows, seats 5-7 and ample use of rear hatch space/cargo space. Pluging in wasn't a worry or very hard to do.

There is 0 customer Service

I want to be very clear I enjoy my Tesla. From there I would never recommend anyone to buy a Tesla or ever buy another Tesla again. There is an intentional lack of customer service with Tesla. The service center here WILL NOT ANSWER. Leave a message, no response, leave 4 messages, nothing. So ok you buy a car, there are issues that stop you from being able to use the vehicle and your only means of solution is to schedule an appointment app for service. What if that’s 2 and half weeks later? Call customer service? There isn't one. Email Tesla? I did that, it’s been 2 days, no response. So then what are you buying when you buy a Tesla? A brand new peace of technology that is prone to have issues that you have 0 customer service with. Where I applaud Tesla for changing the world. I frown on them for getting something as simple as keeping happy customers so wrong. Again if you are thinking about buying a Tesla please know that they will try and charge for things you did not order or need, they will out right lie to your face about calls or emails, and you have access to an app and a calendar for customer service outside of when your vehicle is in service and that’s it. Tesla has forced all the other major car companies to change to electric, and due to the horrible customer service they give I would encourage to wait for the car company you know and love to come out with there own electric vehicle. At least that way you know if there is an issue you can pick up the phone email w.e. and solve the issue and not be sent down a rabbit whole chasing help that just isn’t there.

Incredible pleasure to drive

Hard to drive any other car after driving the Tesla Model X. It packs a punch but is great for the family. Super easy for kids and adults to get in and out of the back, and drives like a tank in snow and ice. Fantastic car.

Super fun, super fast, super safe!

This is the most fun, best designed car I've ever driven. Plus, I never have to go to a gas station! I just plug it in overnight, and that's it. I've always got plenty of range. I also love the overnight software updates -- the car is always current! Oh -- and the self-drive feature is amazing. The car drives itself better than I could myself.

Most amazing technology in a vehicle.

Years ahead of the competition. Never worried about range. Autopilot is incredible. Plans trips with charging stops along the way. Stylish and good for the environment.
