What Problems Does the 2016 Tesla Model X Have?

The 2016 Tesla Model X has been subject to several frequently reported problems and recalls. The Falcon Wing doors were a significant source of issues, including sensor malfunctions, failure to open or close properly, and even unintended closure, leading to potential safety concerns. There have been reports of water leaks around the windshield and Falcon Wing doors. Some owners experienced issues with the MCU (Media Control Unit), leading to touchscreen failures and loss of critical vehicle functions. Suspension components, particularly the air suspension system, have been reported to fail prematurely, requiring expensive repairs.

Recalls for the 2016 Model X included issues related to seatbelt failures, parking brake malfunctions, and potential corrosion in the power steering system. Long-term reliability concerns revolved around battery degradation, although Tesla's battery management system generally mitigates significant range loss. The complexity of the vehicle's technology, including the Autopilot system, has also contributed to potential software glitches and system malfunctions over time. Owners should be aware of these potential issues and thoroughly inspect the vehicle's history and condition before purchasing.

How long will the 2016 Tesla Model X last?

Given proper maintenance, a 2016 Tesla Model X can potentially last for 200,000 miles or more. However, long-term durability depends heavily on battery health and maintenance habits. Battery degradation will occur over time, impacting range. The air suspension system and Falcon Wing doors are known weaknesses that can require costly repairs. Regular software updates are crucial for maintaining optimal performance and addressing potential software glitches. Consistent charging practices and avoiding extreme temperatures can help prolong battery life.

Negative Owner Reviews

You don’t actually own the car. They turn off functions and features without your knowledge or consent. Things you payed for are taken away remotely while you sleep like a thief in the night.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Tesla Model X boasts a wealth of technology. Standard features include a massive 17-inch touchscreen controlling nearly all vehicle functions, navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and a premium audio system. Driver-assistance features include standard Autopilot hardware (though full Autopilot functionality required a separate purchase), lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking.

Optional features included enhanced Autopilot with features like adaptive cruise control and automatic lane changing, as well as full self-driving capability (FSD), which Tesla continues to develop and refine through software updates. Entertainment features consisted of streaming music services and internet connectivity via the touchscreen. The Model X also features over-the-air software updates, allowing Tesla to add new features and improve existing ones remotely.

Safety features include a reinforced battery pack for side-impact protection and numerous airbags. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) awarded the 2016 Tesla Model X a 5-star overall safety rating. IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings may vary depending on the specific test and year, but the Model X generally performed well in crash tests.

2016 Tesla Model X Prices and Market Value

The 2016 Tesla Model X started at around $80,000 when new, with higher-end trims and options pushing the price well over $130,000. Currently, used market prices range from approximately $40,000 to $60,000+, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. Depreciation has been significant, but Tesla vehicles generally hold their value better than many other cars due to their brand recognition and desirability. Factors affecting resale value include battery health, Autopilot/FSD configuration, overall condition, and mileage. Models with lower mileage and upgraded Autopilot features command higher prices.

2016 Tesla Model X Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2016 Tesla Model X can be higher than average due to its expensive technology and repair costs. "Fuel" costs (electricity) are significantly lower than gasoline, but charging costs still exist. Maintenance is generally lower than internal combustion vehicles, but repairs, particularly for the Falcon Wing doors and air suspension, can be expensive. Long-term ownership costs are a mixed bag; lower fuel and maintenance costs are offset by potentially high repair bills and battery replacement costs (eventually). It can be a costly vehicle to own, particularly if major repairs are needed.

2016 Tesla Model X Insurance

Insurance for a 2016 Tesla Model X is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 Tesla Model X Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2016 Tesla Model X competed with other luxury SUVs like the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE, and Audi Q7, but it was unique in its all-electric powertrain and distinctive design. In terms of performance, the Model X offered significantly quicker acceleration than its gas-powered rivals. Feature-wise, it had a more advanced tech suite but lacked the traditional luxury and refinement found in German competitors.

Reliability was a major weakness compared to the BMW, Mercedes, and Audi. The Model X was generally more expensive than its rivals when new. Today, used prices are competitive, but potential repair costs remain a concern.

Similar alternatives from the same year are scarce due to limited EV SUV options. A used 2019 or newer Model X addresses some of the reliability concerns of the 2016 model and offers improved Autopilot features, though at a higher price point. If reliability is a top priority, a traditional luxury SUV from BMW, Mercedes, or Audi might be a better choice, but you'll sacrifice the electric powertrain and Tesla's unique features.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Tesla Model X a Good Wagon?

The 2016 Tesla Model X is ideal for tech enthusiasts and early adopters who prioritize performance and electric driving over ultimate reliability. It's worth buying *if* you're aware of the potential for expensive repairs, particularly concerning the Falcon Wing doors and air suspension. Buying a later model year (2017 or newer) is generally recommended to mitigate some of the early production issues. A thorough pre-purchase inspection is crucial. If you value a smooth, quiet ride and are willing to accept the potential for higher maintenance costs, the 2016 Model X can be a compelling option, particularly if found at a competitive price. Otherwise, consider other luxury SUVs.

Well built and convenient

We bought the 2016 Model X one year ago. So far it has been a great vehicle with outstanding handling. Even on snow and ice (we live near Spokane, WA) it did much better than I expected. The vehicle is heavy and sturdy. Back in September I had a deer run into the car just in front of the drivers door while I was going 55 mph. I was surprised at how little damage the car sustained. You can’t beat the convenience of ‘fueling’ at home.

Tesla is a joke

You don’t actually own the car. They turn off functions and features without your knowledge or consent. Things you payed for are taken away remotely while you sleep like a thief in the night.

The Tesla Model X was one of the most over-engineered cars (per Elon Musk) and lived up to all the hype! Fastest production SUV on the planet!

Way ahead of everyone else.

Crown Jewel of SUVs. The very best in safety, performance, user-friendliness, convenience and healthiness. The only thing less than ideal is the exterior when the falcon wing is not opened.

Way ahead of everyone else.

Best performance SUV with best safety, plus software (OTA, autopilot) and user interfaces that are an era ahead of competition. Not to mention the quietness and the health effect of an EV. Absolutely amazing.
