The 2012 Dodge Caliber is a compact, five-door hatchback that was produced from 2007 to 2012. It aimed to blend the practicality of a hatchback with the styling cues of an SUV. Key trims included the SE, SXT, Uptown, and R/T. New, its price ranged roughly from $16,000 to $20,000. It stood out for its bold styling and relatively affordable price point, making it a popular choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking a versatile vehicle.
The Good

The 2012 Dodge Caliber offered value with its affordable price and practical hatchback design, appealing to budget-conscious buyers. Its bold styling gave it a unique look. While not a performance leader, its fuel efficiency was decent, and it provided adequate comfort for daily commutes. The available Uconnect system was a plus.

The Bad

The 2012 Dodge Caliber had notable weaknesses. Its continuously variable transmission (CVT) was prone to issues and complaints. Engine performance could feel sluggish, and the interior materials were often criticized for their low quality. Reliability was generally below average compared to its competitors. Rust can also be a concern in certain climates.

What Problems Does the 2012 Dodge Caliber Have?

The 2012 Dodge Caliber, like other model years of the same generation, suffered from several frequently reported problems. The most common issue was related to the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). Many owners experienced premature CVT failure, requiring expensive repairs or replacements. Symptoms included slipping, hesitation, and unusual noises. Engine issues, such as oil leaks and excessive oil consumption, were also reported. Interior quality was a consistent complaint, with reports of easily damaged or broken trim pieces and uncomfortable seats.

Electrical issues were not uncommon, ranging from problems with the power windows and locks to malfunctions in the car's computer systems. Suspension components, particularly the struts and shocks, were known to wear out relatively quickly, leading to a rough ride and compromised handling. Premature brake wear was also a concern for some owners.

While specific recalls for the 2012 model year might exist, it's essential to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for the latest recall information. Across the Caliber's production run (2007-2012), potential long-term reliability concerns included rust, especially in areas with harsh winter weather, and the continued viability of the CVT as the vehicle ages.

How long will the 2012 Dodge Caliber last?

A 2012 Dodge Caliber, with proper maintenance, could potentially reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or last 10-15 years. However, its longevity heavily depends on consistent maintenance, especially regarding the CVT. Neglecting scheduled CVT fluid changes significantly shortens its lifespan. The interior trim is prone to wear and tear. Expect potential issues with rust, particularly in regions with road salt. The CVT remains the primary long-term durability concern, followed by potential engine and electrical problems.

wish i could give it 0 stars. steering wheel locks up, sometimes brakes/gas don't work. many times i would step on the gas pedal expecting to go and it staggers, almost causing accidents multiple times. not only that but then it jerks and goes flying, which also almost caused accidents. clock in car doesnt work no matter what, car shut down one time as i was driving (no warning), a few times already cant go past 30 mph. many times the car wont go past 50mph, car constantly jerks, overheated and shut down after 2 hours of driving. the only reason why i'm still putting up with this car is because im not the person paying for it.... cant imagine spending my hard earned money on something as terrible as this.
Sara
I am a single mom of 4 children and I bought this car for our family transportation. It?s been a nightmare from the day I got it. Major mechanical issues, hydroplanes no matter the amount of water on the road (yes even with new tires, balanced and rotated and alignment done) and absolutely horrible on gas milage.

TO SUM IT ALL UP IF YOUR NOT BUYING IT FOR A COLLEGE STUDENT TO DOOOOOOOOOOON'T GET IT PLEASE SAVE YOUR MONEY TO PURCHASE A MORE RELIABLE CAR.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 Dodge Caliber offered a fairly basic level of technology for its time. Standard features typically included a basic audio system with AM/FM radio and a CD player. Higher trims offered an upgraded audio system with satellite radio and a Uconnect infotainment system, which provided features like Bluetooth connectivity and voice command. Driver-assistance features were limited, primarily consisting of standard anti-lock brakes (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC).

Safety features included front and side airbags, as well as side-curtain airbags for head protection. Optional features included fog lamps and remote start.

Crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) should be checked for the specific 2012 model year. Generally, the Caliber performed adequately in frontal crash tests but received lower ratings in side-impact tests. It's important to consult these official sources for the most accurate and up-to-date safety information. Keep in mind that safety standards have evolved significantly since 2012, so compared to newer vehicles, the Caliber's safety technology is relatively outdated.

2012 Dodge Caliber Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2012 Dodge Caliber had a starting MSRP around $16,000, with higher trims reaching closer to $20,000. As a used vehicle, prices vary significantly based on condition, mileage, and trim, but generally range from $3,000 to $8,000. The Caliber has depreciated considerably due to its age, reliability concerns, and lower desirability compared to competitors. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's mechanical condition (especially the CVT), documented maintenance history, and overall cosmetic appearance. Low mileage and well-maintained examples command slightly higher prices, but depreciation remains substantial.

2012 Dodge Caliber Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2012 Dodge Caliber are typically relatively low due to its age and value. Fuel economy is decent but not exceptional. Maintenance costs can be moderate, but potential CVT repairs can significantly increase expenses. Repair costs can be higher than average due to the Caliber's reliability issues. Overall, long-term ownership costs can be unpredictable. While initially affordable, potential repairs can make it less economical compared to more reliable alternatives. Budgeting for potential CVT or other mechanical issues is crucial.

2012 Dodge Caliber Insurance

Insurance for a 2012 Dodge Caliber is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 Dodge Caliber Compare to Other Vehicle?

The 2012 Dodge Caliber competed against vehicles like the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, and Hyundai Elantra. In terms of performance, the Caliber lagged behind most rivals, particularly in acceleration and handling. Its interior quality and features were generally inferior to those of the Civic, Corolla, and Mazda3. Reliability was a significant weakness compared to the Japanese and Korean competitors.

While the Caliber might have been slightly more affordable initially, its long-term ownership costs, due to potential repairs, could offset any initial savings. The Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla offered superior reliability and resale value. The Mazda3 provided a more engaging driving experience. The Hyundai Elantra offered a compelling combination of features and value with a longer warranty.

As alternatives, consider the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, or Hyundai Elantra. These vehicles offer better reliability, performance, and overall value compared to the 2012 Dodge Caliber. They are generally considered more dependable and enjoyable to own in the long run.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Dodge Caliber a Good Vehicle?

The 2012 Dodge Caliber is best suited for budget-conscious buyers primarily concerned with initial purchase price and basic transportation. It's worth considering *only* if found at a very low price and with a thoroughly documented maintenance history, including evidence of CVT servicing. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is essential, focusing specifically on the CVT's condition. Avoid models with the CVT if possible, or budget for potential replacement. Newer, more reliable alternatives are generally a better investment, especially for long-term ownership. The Uptown trim might offer a marginally better experience due to its upgraded features, but only if the price difference is minimal. Buy at your own risk!

Better than expected in almost every way.

This was my son's car he drove commuting to work about an hour each way. He got a little bigger car to have more room for child seats. I decided to use the Caliber to commute to work while it is for sale. I have been very surprised at the leg room and comfort of the vehicle. It drives well, is very easy to see out of, and runs great. It performs reasonably well for a 4 cylinder engine. I wouldn't mind owning this car myself if I needed another car.
