The 2017 Mazda CX-3 is a subcompact crossover SUV, known for its stylish design and engaging driving dynamics. Part of the first generation CX-3 (2016-2021), it offered a blend of practicality and Mazda's signature zoom-zoom spirit. Key trims included Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring. New, the price ranged roughly from $20,000 to $27,000. Its attractive styling, above-average handling, and upscale interior for its class made it a popular choice.
The Good

The 2017 CX-3 offers a fun driving experience with responsive handling (emotional appeal). It's relatively fuel-efficient and offers a stylish, well-appointed interior for the price (practical appeal). While not the most spacious, it's generally reliable and offers good value as a daily driver and provides a degree of practicality typical of a small crossover SUV.

The Bad

The 2017 CX-3's rear seat and cargo space are limited compared to some rivals. The infotainment system can feel dated to some, and the engine, while adequate, isn't particularly powerful. Listen for any unusual noises from the automatic transmission. Check for proper functioning of all electronic features.

Analysis

What Problems Does the 2017 Mazda CX-3 Have?

The 2017 Mazda CX-3 generally enjoys good reliability ratings. However, some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system, including freezing, slow response times, and Bluetooth connectivity problems. Others have noted minor electrical glitches, such as malfunctioning sensors or intermittent interior lights. Some owners have reported issues with the paint being thin or easily chipped. While not widespread, there have been mentions of automatic transmission issues, such as rough shifting or delayed engagement, especially at higher mileage. It is recommended to get a pre-purchase inspection from a trusted mechanic.

Regarding recalls, it's important to check the NHTSA website for the latest information, as recalls can be issued at any time. Common areas to check are for fuel pump failures which have affected later model years, and should be considered in pre-purchase inspections. Older model years are less likely to have active recalls still outstanding but checking is crucial. Long-term reliability concerns are relatively minimal, provided regular maintenance is performed. However, potential buyers should pay close attention to the transmission and electronic systems during a pre-purchase inspection.

How long will the 2017 Mazda CX-3 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2017 Mazda CX-3 can reasonably be expected to last for 150,000-200,000 miles or 10-13 years. Mazda vehicles, in general, have a good reputation for longevity when properly cared for. Regular oil changes, timely fluid replacements, and adherence to the manufacturer's recommended service schedule are crucial. Potential long-term weaknesses might include wear and tear on suspension components, potential issues with the automatic transmission at higher mileage, and possible deterioration of interior trim and upholstery. Rust can be a factor in colder climates where road salt is used.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2017 Mazda CX-3 features the Mazda Connect infotainment system with a 7-inch display, controlled by a rotary dial and buttons. Standard features include Bluetooth connectivity, a rearview camera, and push-button start. Higher trims offer a navigation system and a premium Bose audio system.

Driver-assistance features include blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert (standard on Touring and Grand Touring). The Grand Touring trim adds adaptive front lighting.

Safety features include standard stability control, traction control, antilock brakes, and a suite of airbags. Optional features included i-ACTIVSENSE safety package, which could include Mazda Radar Cruise Control, Smart City Brake Support, Lane Departure Warning, and High Beam Control.

Crash-test ratings are generally good. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) awarded the 2017 CX-3 a "Top Safety Pick" rating. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave it a 4-star overall safety rating. It is recommended to verify specific ratings for the model year on these organizations' websites as ratings can change.

The CX-3 depreciates at a moderate rate, retaining a decent portion of its value. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, mileage, maintenance history, trim level (Grand Touring models tend to hold their value better), and geographic location. Cars in popular colors also tend to fetch a higher price.

Fuel economy is good, contributing to lower running costs. Routine maintenance, such as oil changes and tire rotations, is affordable. Overall, the CX-3 offers a budget-friendly ownership experience.

Insurance for a 2017 Mazda CX-3 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2017 Mazda CX-3 Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2017 Mazda CX-3 competes with vehicles like the Honda HR-V, Jeep Renegade, Nissan Kicks, and Chevrolet Trax. In terms of performance, the CX-3 offers a more engaging driving experience than most rivals, with sharper handling. However, the HR-V provides significantly more cargo and passenger space. The Jeep Renegade offers a more rugged aesthetic and available off-road capabilities. The Nissan Kicks is often more affordable, but sacrifices performance and refinement. The Chevrolet Trax is another budget-friendly option, but its interior quality and driving dynamics are not as impressive as the CX-3.

Regarding reliability, the CX-3 is generally on par with the HR-V. However, the Renegade has had some reliability concerns. In terms of features, the CX-3 offers a decent array of tech, but some rivals have more advanced infotainment systems. For price, the CX-3 is competitive. Alternatives to consider include the Honda HR-V if space is a priority, or a slightly used Mazda3 hatchback for similar driving dynamics with more practicality. The Hyundai Kona is a newer option that offers a blend of style, features, and value.

It's a good option for city dwellers or those who don't require a lot of cargo space. It's generally worth buying, particularly on the used market, offering good value for its features and reliability. The Touring trim provides a sweet spot, offering desirable features without the premium price of the Grand Touring. Ensure a thorough pre-purchase inspection, paying particular attention to the transmission and infotainment system. Consider a newer vehicle if advanced safety features are a must-have.

Good exterior design and interior design

This car met all my need. I lived in a compact city and I drive this car for commuting, so I don't need a big car. This car's size is perfect for this use, but might be too small for family use(the back seat and trunk is pretty small).

Great value for high safety ratings

The Mazda CX-3 proved to be the best value for my daughter's first car. I did extensive research, and while this is a smaller SUV/crossover than some of the other SUV's I researched, it has amazing safety ratings (an IIHS top safety pick) and the gas mileage can't be beat (27 mpg city, 32 mpg highway). Since we were looking at used cars, we were able to get a significantly newer vehicle with far fewer miles on it than other smaller SUV's we were looking at while still being assured that our daughter would be safe when driving it.

Peppy little car

traded in my bigger SUV for this car to save on gas. It gets great fuel mileage for an awd vehicle, It's got good get up and go, mechanically sound and does pretty well in the snow. Downside is how very small it is, would not recommend for anyone with children. Other then the very limited space (also the cup holders are in an awful spot and not user friendly at all) but if you're looking for something small and cheap on fuel this car is perfect.
