Analysis
What Problems Does the 2018 Toyota 86 Have?
Recalls for the Toyota 86 have been relatively infrequent, but it's crucial to check the NHTSA website for any outstanding recalls specific to the 2018 model year before purchasing a used vehicle. Check for recalls related to fuel pump failures, as these have affected numerous Toyota models across various years, and while less common in the 86, it's prudent to verify.
Long-term reliability is generally considered good, thanks to Toyota's reputation. However, the engine issues mentioned above are the primary concern. Regular maintenance, including oil changes and addressing any unusual engine noises promptly, is critical for maximizing the car's lifespan. The clutch in manual transmission models can also wear out faster than average if the car is driven aggressively.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Built-in Tech and Entertainment: The standard infotainment system includes a 7-inch touchscreen display, a rearview camera, Bluetooth connectivity, and USB ports. It lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. The audio system is adequate but not exceptional.
Driver-Assistance Features: The 2018 86 is sparsely equipped with driver-assistance features. It typically only includes standard features like ABS, stability control, and traction control. Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) such as automatic emergency braking or lane departure warning are not available.
Safety Features: Standard safety features include front airbags, side airbags, and side curtain airbags.
Optional Features: There are very few optional tech or safety features available. Higher trims like the GT may include upgraded interior materials and styling enhancements, but the core tech and safety features remain largely the same.
Crash-Test Ratings: Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) can vary. It's recommended to check both organization's websites for the specific 2018 Toyota 86 ratings, as not all model years and trims were fully tested. Generally, the 86 performs adequately in crash tests, but its small size may offer less protection compared to larger vehicles.

How Does the 2018 Toyota 86 Compare to Other Coupe?
Performance: The Miata offers similar handling but with a drop-top experience. The GTI and Focus ST offer more power and practicality but lack the 86's pure rear-wheel-drive feel.
Features: The 86 is relatively basic in terms of features compared to the GTI and Focus ST, which offer more tech and driver-assistance systems. The Miata also prioritizes driving experience over features, though it offers some modern conveniences.
Reliability: The Toyota 86 is generally considered reliable, similar to the Miata. The GTI and Focus ST can have more potential maintenance issues.
Price: The 86 is generally more affordable than the GTI and Focus ST, and comparable to the Miata.
Alternatives: If you prioritize pure driving experience and rear-wheel drive, the Miata is a great alternative, offering an open-top experience. If you want more power and practicality, the GTI or Focus ST are better choices. The Subaru BRZ is essentially the same car as the 86, so it's a similar alternative that might offer slightly different styling or features depending on the year.
