The Good
The 2019 Toyota 86 boasts engaging performance with sharp handling and a responsive engine. While not the fastest, it's fun to drive. Toyota's reputation adds to its reliability. The design is sporty and attractive. It offers good value for a sports car. Emotionally, it's about the thrill of driving; practically, it's relatively affordable and reliable.
The Bad
The 2019 Toyota 86's weaknesses include a relatively underpowered engine and a somewhat cramped interior, especially in the rear seats. The engine's torque dip in the mid-range can be noticeable. The cabin materials can feel a bit cheap. Also, watch for oil consumption issues, a known concern in earlier model years that can sometimes persist. Check for proper maintenance records.

What Problems Does the 2019 Toyota 86 Have?
Recalls for the 86 have been relatively infrequent. Check the NHTSA website for any open recalls related to the specific VIN. Long-term reliability is generally good if maintenance is performed according to the manufacturer's recommendations. However, like any sports car, hard driving can accelerate wear and tear on components such as brakes, tires, and the clutch (if equipped with a manual transmission). Some owners have also reported minor issues with the infotainment system, such as Bluetooth connectivity problems. Overall, the 2019 86 is a relatively reliable car, but addressing potential oil consumption and carbon buildup issues proactively is recommended.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Driver-assistance features are limited. It includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), and Anti-lock Braking System (ABS). There are no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, or automatic emergency braking available, even as optional features.
Safety features include standard front airbags, side airbags, and curtain airbags. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS should be consulted for specific scores. While the 86 provides basic safety features, it lags behind competitors in terms of advanced technology and driver-assistance systems. The focus is more on driving experience than cutting-edge tech. The TRD Special Edition does not add any additional safety or tech features, but prioritizes performance upgrades.

How Does the 2019 Toyota 86 Compare to Other Coupe?
In terms of performance, the 86 excels in handling but lags behind the Veloster N in outright speed. Feature-wise, the 86 is relatively basic compared to the Miata (depending on trim) and Veloster N. Reliability is a strong point for both the 86 and BRZ. Price-wise, the 86 is generally competitive.
Alternatives to consider: If you prioritize handling and don't need rear seats, the Miata is a great choice. If you want more power and modern features, the Veloster N is worth a look. The BRZ is a very similar alternative to the 86. The Nissan 370Z is another option with more power, but it's aging and lacks the modern features of the others. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual priorities.

Great! But not perfect. The car is doing ok, 2019 no problems. 2020 two problems, it’s aggravating! Having to wake up to go to work and having a dead battery.

Great car - fun to drive! This is a really great little sportscar. I rarely see another one on the road, so it tends to turn heads. Very responsive. I recently took it on a road trip and the seats comfortably hugged my body. It's worth consideration in the mid-to-high $20s price range. Excellent value.
