What Problems Does the 2016 Volkswagen Golf Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2016 Volkswagen Golf include issues with the infotainment system, such as freezing, glitching, or failure to connect to mobile devices. Some owners have also reported problems with the water pump, which can lead to coolant leaks and potential engine damage if not addressed promptly. Electrical issues, including problems with sensors and wiring, are also occasionally reported. It's important to note that the diesel models (TDI) were subject to recalls and buybacks due to the diesel emissions scandal, and their availability may be limited.

Regarding recalls, it's essential to check the NHTSA website for any open recalls related to the specific VIN of the vehicle. Common recall items might include fuel system issues, airbag malfunctions, or other safety-related concerns. Long-term reliability can be affected by the quality of maintenance. Adhering to the recommended service schedule, using quality parts, and addressing issues promptly can help mitigate potential problems. While the Golf is generally considered a reliable car, these potential issues should be considered when purchasing a used 2016 model. Specifically, checking for water pump service history is advisable.

How long will the 2016 Volkswagen Golf last?

With proper maintenance, a 2016 Volkswagen Golf can easily reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Owners who follow the recommended service schedule, use quality parts, and address repairs promptly can expect a longer lifespan. However, neglecting maintenance, particularly oil changes and fluid checks, can shorten the vehicle's lifespan. Potential long-term weaknesses include wear and tear on suspension components, potential for rust in areas with harsh winters, and gradual degradation of interior materials. The infotainment system can also become outdated over time.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Volkswagen Golf offers a range of tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. Standard tech includes a touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity, USB port, and a rearview camera. Higher trims add features like a larger touchscreen, navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility (some models), and a premium audio system.

Driver-assistance features, depending on the trim and options package, can include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and parking sensors. These features enhance safety and convenience.

Safety features include standard antilock brakes, electronic stability control, and a suite of airbags. The 2016 Volkswagen Golf received excellent crash-test ratings from both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The IIHS awarded the 2016 Golf a "Top Safety Pick+" rating, indicating its strong performance in crash tests. These ratings demonstrate the Golf's commitment to passenger safety.

Optional features, available on higher trims or as standalone options, include a panoramic sunroof, leather upholstery, and upgraded wheels.

2016 Volkswagen Golf Prices and Market Value

The 2016 Volkswagen Golf had a starting MSRP of around $18,000 to $22,000 for the base models, while higher trims like the GTI and SEL ranged from $25,000 to $30,000 when new. As of today, used market prices typically range from $10,000 to $18,000, depending on the trim, mileage, condition, and location. The Golf depreciates at a moderate rate compared to other vehicles in its class. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, maintenance history, and the presence of desirable options. Models with clean titles and complete maintenance records generally command higher prices.

2016 Volkswagen Golf Cost of Ownership

The 2016 Volkswagen Golf is generally considered economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel costs are low to average, especially with the 1.8T engine. Routine maintenance, like oil changes and tire rotations, is reasonably priced. However, repairs can be more expensive compared to domestic brands due to the cost of parts and labor. Addressing minor issues promptly can prevent costly repairs down the road. Overall, the Golf provides a balance between upfront cost and long-term expenses.

Insurance for a 2016 Volkswagen Golf is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 Volkswagen Golf Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2016 Volkswagen Golf competes with the Mazda3, Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and Ford Focus. In terms of performance, the Golf offers a more refined driving experience and peppier engine compared to the Corolla and Civic (non-Si/Type R). The Mazda3 offers similar handling but a slightly less powerful base engine. The Focus offered comparable performance, but its reliability record is generally considered lower.

In terms of features, the Golf offers a comparable level of technology and comfort. However, the Civic might offer more advanced driver-assistance features depending on the trim level. Regarding reliability, the Corolla and Civic are generally considered more reliable than the Golf, although the Golf's reliability is still decent. The Mazda3 offers comparable reliability. In terms of price, the Golf is often slightly more expensive than the Corolla and Civic, but offers more premium feel than Focus.

Alternatives to the 2016 Golf include the Mazda3, which offers a similar blend of fun-to-drive dynamics and practicality. The Honda Civic is a good choice for those prioritizing reliability and fuel efficiency. If you're looking for a sportier experience, consider the GTI version of the Golf, or a used Focus ST (though be mindful of its reliability). Overall, the Golf is a well-rounded choice, but consider your priorities when choosing between these competitors.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Volkswagen Golf a Good Sedan?

The 2016 Volkswagen Golf is a great choice for individuals or small families seeking a versatile, fun-to-drive, and relatively fuel-efficient compact car. It's worth buying, especially as a used vehicle, if you prioritize driving dynamics and interior quality over absolute rock-solid reliability. A well-maintained SE or SEL trim offers a good balance of features and value. Ensure a thorough pre-purchase inspection, focusing on potential electrical issues and water pump problems. Avoid TDI models due to emissions scandal unless you are fully aware of the implications. If a sportier experience is desired, seek a GTI, but budget for higher maintenance costs.

2016 VW E-Golf

I just purchased this car this week. It is fully electric. I was impressed with the power and "get up" it has for an electric car. It has plenty of room inside.

The Golf is a super fun car to drive!

CarPlay, turbocharged engine, compact, easy parking (that's a big deal in LA!). It's easy to why there's a whole community around the obsession with the Golf!

Definitely the best in its price range

I test drove everything under the sun with a similar body style at a similar price point and this was without a doubt the winner. It come standard with turbo and has so much more pep than the competition. It was luxury features and you just know it's made well when you hear the satisfying thud when the doors close. Highly recommend.

Love my VW Golf!

I recently bought a used 2016 Golf from the local VW car lot. It had previously been leased, had approx. 21,000 km and was in like-new condition. I was on the market for a newer hatchback (my last car was a 2006 Mazda 3 Sport) with more "bells and whistles". I narrowed it down to a newer Mazda 3 Sport and a VW Golf and chose the Golf because of its more streamlined, compact shape. The Golf has a shorter front end which I like the look of plus it makes it even easier to park. So far, I'm absolutely loving my new car and look forward to driving it every day!

Terrific car for local commute and about town.

Great car from the legroom, folding seats, styling, and quality. It's a winner. I love that it's the same as a VW Golf but electric!

Fun to drive

Handles well, excellent vision, am very happy with this car. Better mileage than my CC and handles as well if not better. Hopefully it's as durable.

1.8 liter turbo stick shift S Four Door

Fun. Was going to buy new 1.4 liter Jetta. Had had two 2014 Passats with 1.8 liter, but at, wanted drive with stick, so drive this. Extended payments out a year to get instead of Jetta. More elegant, and quicker. Great gearbox, and clutch, once you get used to them.

Great family car for cities

We needed to thread the needle - a car small enough to park in the city, but big enough for my 6'5" gallootness - plus a couple of carseats in the back. This fit the bill, and it's so much fun to drive, with lots of great little touches and an entertainment system that pairs effortlessly with the smartphone.

Joy to drive; economy car that feels "German"

I drove a half dozen similar small cars before buying another Golf. Nothing compares to its refinement.

Great parts but overall a cheap piece of junk

Always wanted a Golf and hoped it would be great. Many good features but squeaking, groaning sunroof too intrusive to deal with. Felt and sounded like a 20-year-old Yugo. Made poorly despite great engine and handling characteristics. Very sad to sell it and lost many thousands in depreciation but made me feel like driving a rickety, rattling, creaking old piece of junk. Quality control unacceptable.
