The 2004 Volvo S40 represents the first year of the second-generation S40, a compact sedan known for its safety and Scandinavian design. Key trims included the base model and the T5, offering a more powerful engine. The pricing range when new was roughly $24,000 to $30,000. Its popularity stemmed from its reputation for safety, comfortable interior, and distinctive styling compared to its competitors. It stood out for its focus on occupant protection.
The Good

The 2004 Volvo S40 offers a blend of performance, especially in the T5 trim, and renowned Volvo safety. Its comfortable interior and stylish design appeal emotionally, while its reasonable fuel efficiency and reputation for reliability provide practical benefits. Its strong value proposition for a European sedan also contributes to its appeal.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2004 Volvo S40 include potential issues with electronic components and some reports of premature wear in the suspension. Repair costs can be higher than some competitors due to its European origin. Check for oil leaks and ensure regular maintenance has been performed. The turning radius isn't the best.

What Problems Does the 2004 Volvo S40 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2004 Volvo S40 often revolve around electrical issues. These can include problems with the central locking system, power windows, and occasionally the climate control system. Some owners have reported issues with the electronic throttle module (ETM), which can cause erratic engine behavior. Oil leaks, particularly around the valve cover gasket, are another common concern. Suspension components, such as control arm bushings and struts, may require replacement sooner than expected. The automatic transmission, while generally reliable, should be checked for smooth shifting and regular fluid changes are crucial for longevity.

Recalls for the 2004 Volvo S40 have addressed issues such as potential fuel leaks and problems with the supplemental restraint system (SRS). It is important to check the vehicle's VIN with Volvo or the NHTSA to confirm whether all applicable recalls have been addressed.

Long-term reliability concerns primarily relate to the aging of the car's various systems. As the car gets older, rubber components like hoses and belts can deteriorate, leading to potential leaks and failures. Regular maintenance, including timely fluid changes and inspections, is essential to mitigate these risks and prolong the car's lifespan. Paying attention to any warning lights and addressing issues promptly can help prevent more significant and costly repairs down the line.

How long will the 2004 Volvo S40 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2004 Volvo S40 can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report reaching 15-20 years of service. However, longevity greatly depends on consistent maintenance habits, including regular oil changes, timely replacement of wear items, and addressing issues promptly. Long-term durability can be affected by rust, especially in regions with harsh winters. Weaknesses over time include potential failure of electronic components, suspension wear, and the need for more frequent repairs as the car ages. Preventative maintenance is key to maximizing its lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2004 Volvo S40 came equipped with a standard audio system including a CD player. Higher trims or option packages could include a premium sound system. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like adaptive cruise control or lane departure warning available at the time, reflecting the technology available in 2004.

However, Volvo emphasized safety. Standard safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS), traction control, and front and side airbags. Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS) was also standard, designed to reduce neck injuries in rear-end collisions. Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) was another standard safety feature. Optional safety features included stability control (Dynamic Stability Traction Control - DSTC) which was available on some trims.

In terms of crash-test ratings, the 2004 Volvo S40 generally performed well. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave the S40 good ratings in frontal offset and side impact tests. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) also awarded it high scores in its crash tests. These positive crash test results reinforced Volvo's reputation for safety and were a key selling point for the S40. The emphasis was placed more on passive safety systems rather than the active driver assistance features that are commonplace in modern vehicles.

2004 Volvo S40 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2004 Volvo S40 had an MSRP ranging from approximately $24,000 to $30,000, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices typically range from $2,000 to $6,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The S40 has experienced significant depreciation due to its age. Factors affecting resale value include the car's overall condition, maintenance history, mileage, and whether it has desirable options like leather seats or the T5 engine. Cars with a clean title and documented service records tend to command higher prices.

2004 Volvo S40 Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2004 Volvo S40 are generally moderate, but can vary based on driving history and location. Fuel costs are average for its class. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher compared to domestic or some Japanese brands due to the availability and price of parts. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on maintenance habits; neglecting repairs can lead to more expensive issues down the road. While not the most economical choice, it's not excessively costly if well-maintained.

2004 Volvo S40 Insurance

Insurance for a 2004 Volvo S40 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2004 Volvo S40 Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2004 Volvo S40 competed against vehicles like the Acura TSX, Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, and Volkswagen Jetta. In terms of performance, the S40 T5 offered comparable power to the base engines in the A4 and 3 Series, but the Acura TSX often felt more nimble. Feature-wise, the S40 was generally well-equipped for its price point, but lacked some of the advanced technology found in the Acura. Reliability is where the S40 lags slightly behind the TSX and Jetta, while being comparable to the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series of that era. Repair costs for the Volvo are generally higher than the Japanese rivals.

In terms of price, the S40 was competitive when new, but used prices reflect its age and depreciation. If reliability is a top concern, the Acura TSX is a better alternative. If you are looking for a similar driving experience with potentially lower running costs the Volkswagen Jetta could be considered. The Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series offered a more premium experience, but also come with higher maintenance costs. Consider the specific needs and priorities when comparing these vehicles.

Final Verdict: Is the 2004 Volvo S40 a Good Sedan?

The 2004 Volvo S40 is ideal for someone seeking a safe and stylish compact sedan with a European flair. It's worth buying used if you prioritize safety and are comfortable with potentially higher maintenance costs. The T5 trim offers a more engaging driving experience, but the 2.4i is more economical. A well-maintained example with a comprehensive service history is crucial. It's not recommended if you're looking for the absolute lowest cost of ownership or require advanced technology. Before buying, have a mechanic inspect the car for common issues like oil leaks and electrical problems.

I too LOVE THIS CAR

I bought my 2.4i new in September of 2004. There's only been a couple minor fixes in 19 years e.g. Wiper fluid pump (ford), etc. Someone mentioned the windows rolling themselves down. Here too, but it cleared itself up. Currently at 149k miles and rust is forming around the wheel wells. My sense is the body will go before the rest of this little zippy tank does. Afraid I'll never find anything like it again...

BEST CAR I HAVE EVER OWNED

I purchased this car as a commuter to go back and forth from school, not even two weeks after purchasing it, i hit a cow doing 45 in the middle of the night, I can honestly tell you this car SAVED MY LIFE, if i wasnt in this car i would have been seriously hurt, or even worse killed. If you are purchasing this car for your family i recommend it hands down. I walked away from that accident practically scratch free. The car was totalled...
