The 2009 Volvo S40 is a compact sedan known for its safety, Scandinavian design, and comfortable interior. Part of the second generation (2004-2012), it offered a stylish alternative to mainstream sedans. Key trims included the 2.4i, T5, and T5 AWD. New pricing ranged from approximately $26,000 to $32,000. Its popularity stemmed from its reputation for safety and distinctive styling compared to competitors like Honda and Toyota.
The Good

The 2009 Volvo S40 offers a compelling blend of advantages. Practically, it's known for its safety and decent fuel efficiency. The comfortable seats and elegant design appeal to emotional buyers, providing a premium feel without the premium price tag. The T5 models offer a performance boost, making driving more enjoyable. Generally, the S40 offers good value for money as a used car.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2009 Volvo S40 include potential electrical issues, particularly with the lighting and sensor systems. Some owners have reported problems with the climate control system. Repair costs can be higher than average due to the car's European origins and the relative scarcity of parts compared to more common brands. Suspension components and bushings should also be inspected for wear.

What Problems Does the 2009 Volvo S40 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2009 Volvo S40 often involve electrical issues. Specifically, problems with the lighting system, including headlight malfunctions and taillight failures, are common. Issues with the electronic throttle system have also been reported, potentially leading to stalling or reduced engine performance. The climate control system can experience malfunctions, such as failing to blow cold air or inconsistent temperature regulation.

Regarding recalls, it's important to check the NHTSA website for any outstanding recalls specific to the VIN of the vehicle in question. While no widespread, model-specific recalls are commonly cited for the 2009 S40, recalls can occur for various reasons, and checking the vehicle's history is crucial.

Long-term reliability concerns often relate to the durability of suspension components, such as bushings and control arms, especially in areas with poor road conditions. Oil leaks from the engine and transmission can also develop over time. The automatic transmission, particularly in higher-mileage vehicles, might exhibit signs of wear, such as slipping or rough shifting. Regular maintenance and timely repairs are essential to mitigate these potential issues.

How long will the 2009 Volvo S40 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2009 Volvo S40 can reasonably achieve 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding this milestone with diligent care. Regular oil changes (every 5,000-7,500 miles), timely replacement of wear items (brakes, tires, belts), and addressing minor issues promptly are crucial for longevity.

Long-term durability weaknesses often manifest as increased susceptibility to electrical problems, suspension wear, and potential oil leaks. The automatic transmission may require servicing or even replacement at higher mileage. Preventative maintenance and careful driving habits significantly influence the car's lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Volvo S40 came standard with a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard entertainment features included a CD player with MP3 compatibility and an auxiliary input. Higher trims often featured a premium sound system. Built-in tech was relatively basic, focusing on essential functions rather than advanced infotainment. There was no navigation system available as standard, but it was an optional feature.

Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles. Anti-lock brakes (ABS), stability control (DSTC), and traction control were standard. Some models included optional features like a blind-spot monitoring system.

Safety was a Volvo hallmark, and the S40 was no exception. Standard safety features included front and side airbags, as well as side curtain airbags. Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS) in the front seats was also standard. The 2009 Volvo S40 received excellent crash-test ratings from both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The IIHS awarded it a "Good" rating in frontal offset, side impact, and roof strength tests. These strong safety ratings were a significant selling point for the S40.

2009 Volvo S40 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Volvo S40 ranged from approximately $26,000 to $32,000, depending on the trim level and options. As of late 2023, used market prices typically range from $4,000 to $10,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The S40 has depreciated significantly due to its age and the typical depreciation curve for vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include the car's overall condition, mileage, service history, and whether it's a base 2.4i model or a more desirable T5 with all-wheel drive. A clean title and well-documented maintenance history will command a higher price.

2009 Volvo S40 Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2009 Volvo S40 are generally moderate, potentially slightly higher than some competitors due to Volvo's brand image and repair costs. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially for the 2.4i model. Maintenance and repair costs can be more expensive than average due to the car's European heritage and potentially pricier parts. Long-term ownership costs are moderate overall, but unexpected repairs can make it less economical than some other compact sedans. Budgeting for potential repairs is recommended.

2009 Volvo S40 Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Volvo S40 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Volvo S40 Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2009 Volvo S40 competed with vehicles like the Acura TSX, Audi A3, BMW 3 Series, and Mazda3. In terms of performance, the S40 T5 offered comparable power to the TSX and A3, but the BMW 3 Series was generally considered more engaging to drive. Feature-wise, the S40 was competitive but not class-leading. Reliability is where the S40 can be a concern, as the Acura TSX and Mazda3 are often cited as more reliable options.

Regarding price, the S40 offered a good value proposition, especially on the used market, often undercutting the prices of the Audi and BMW. However, the higher potential repair costs can offset some of those savings. The Mazda3 offers a similar level of practicality and fun-to-drive factor with significantly better reliability and lower running costs. The Acura TSX presents a strong alternative, offering a more refined driving experience and better predicted reliability than the Volvo.

If reliability is a primary concern, the Acura TSX or Mazda3 are better alternatives. If a luxurious feel and driving experience are prioritized, the BMW 3 Series (though more expensive) might be a better choice. The Audi A3 presents a similar package to the S40, but with potentially higher maintenance costs.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Volvo S40 a Good Sedan?

The 2009 Volvo S40 is ideal for buyers who appreciate its distinctive Scandinavian design, comfortable interior, and strong safety ratings, and are willing to accept potentially higher maintenance costs. It's worth buying used if you find a well-maintained example with a comprehensive service history. The T5 trim offers a more engaging driving experience. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended to identify any potential issues before committing to the purchase. If reliability and low running costs are paramount, other alternatives in its class might be a better fit. However, if you're drawn to Volvo's unique style and safety reputation, the S40 can be a rewarding ownership experience.

Good car but wouldn't recommend

I bought a used 2009 Volvo S40 about a year ago from day 4 I started having problems with light my taillight went out first which cost $360 to fix because they are LED the headlight went out a couple days later when I took a trip. after that the daytime running light went out! About a month later the motor in the seat went out and the seat was stuck back that was another 300 to fix and a day after that the trunk motor went out which still hasn't been fixed.. It's a pretty good reliable car but unless you want to pay a lot for maintance cost I wouldn't recommend. On the plus side the seats are very comfortable and the stock radio is the best!! It has a nice sleek design but looks can be decieving

My second Volvo

Drove a 240 DL for 15 years and sold it, but it was still running with over 150,000 miles (which is not all that high of mileage for that car). Drove a Buick and it had transmission problems at less than 30,000 miles. Came back to Volvo and I expect this 4-1/2 year old car to take me well into the 2020s. This is a fun, sleek, modern ride and I LOVE IT!!!

Great Volvo!

I got this car after it had been a lease car. It's driven like new and my mechanic said I'd gotten a great deal on it. It looks great and has most of the bells/whistles a Volvo should have, but isn't over the top luxury, which I appreciate. Great looking, comfortable, and practical.
