What Problems Does the 2007 Volvo S40 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2007 Volvo S40 often revolve around electronic components. The electronic throttle body (ETB) is a common failure point, potentially causing erratic idling or stalling. Climate control system issues, such as malfunctioning blend door actuators or compressor failures, are also reported. Some owners have experienced problems with the ignition coils and the fuel system.
Recalls for the 2007 S40 were issued for potential fuel pump relay failures, which could lead to the engine stalling, and for issues related to the brake light switch, which could prevent the brake lights from illuminating.
Long-term reliability concerns include the potential for oil leaks as the engine ages, particularly around the turbocharger on the T5 models. Suspension components, such as control arm bushings and struts, may require replacement over time due to wear and tear. Proper and timely maintenance, including regular oil changes and fluid checks, is crucial to mitigate these potential issues and extend the vehicle's lifespan. The 2007 model year, being several years old now, will likely show more wear and tear compared to newer models, so a thorough pre-purchase inspection is highly recommended.

How long will the 2007 Volvo S40 last?

A well-maintained 2007 Volvo S40 can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Years of service often depend on usage, but many can provide reliable transportation for 15 years or longer with proper care. Long-term durability is generally good, particularly if routine maintenance is followed. However, weaknesses that emerge over time include increased susceptibility to rust in colder climates, wear and tear on suspension components, and potential failures of electronic components as mentioned earlier. Regular inspections and proactive repairs are key to maximizing the vehicle's lifespan.

The Garners
This car is in very good condition even though it's 13 years old. We just got it in our possession yesterday since it still needed detailed but it is a great little car so far.
Seth
This car has been very reliable and can make it through all conditions. The AWD, great balance, and overall handling make it unstoppable through all winter conditions and fun to drive in warmer weather.
Car Connoisseur
I just purchased my Volvo S40 over the weekend and I am very pleased. The comfortability and refinement are extremely impressive. I mostly love the comfort level at the driver's seat...back support is phenomenal. The space around the wheel is also excellent. The design of the rear and interior make it easier to view blind spots. Handling is also a plus on this vehicle. The standard stability control on the 2007 models is most certainly a plus. I would definitely recommend this vehicle to others.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2007 Volvo S40 came with a decent array of built-in tech and safety features for its time. Standard entertainment included a CD player with AM/FM radio. Higher trims and optional packages offered a premium sound system and a navigation system. Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern cars, primarily consisting of cruise control.
Safety was a major focus for Volvo, and the 2007 S40 included standard features like anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), front and side airbags, and side curtain airbags. Optional features included bi-xenon headlights.
Crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) were generally very good. The IIHS gave the S40 a "Good" rating in most crash tests. NHTSA awarded it four or five stars in frontal and side-impact crash tests. These strong safety ratings contribute to the S40's appeal as a safe and reliable vehicle. While lacking the advanced driver-assistance systems of newer vehicles, the S40's robust construction and comprehensive safety features provided a high level of protection for its occupants.

2007 Volvo S40 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2007 Volvo S40 ranged from approximately $22,000 to $30,000 depending on the trim level and options. Current used market prices typically range from $3,000 to $8,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The S40 has depreciated significantly due to its age. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's overall condition, maintenance history, mileage, and whether it has desirable options like leather seats or a premium sound system. A clean title and a documented service history will significantly increase its resale value.

2007 Volvo S40 Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2007 Volvo S40 are typically moderate. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially for the 2.4i model. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher compared to some domestic or Japanese brands, due to specialized parts and labor. Long-term ownership costs lean towards the slightly more expensive side, especially if unexpected repairs arise. Regular maintenance can help mitigate these costs. Overall, it's not the most economical car to own, but not excessively expensive either.

2007 Volvo S40 Insurance

Insurance for a 2007 Volvo S40 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2007 Volvo S40 Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2007 Volvo S40 competes with vehicles like the Acura TSX, Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, and Mazda3. In terms of performance, the S40 T5 is competitive but not class-leading, while the 2.4i is more focused on fuel economy. Feature-wise, it offered comparable amenities for its time. Reliability is generally good, but not as consistently high as the Acura TSX or Mazda3. Price-wise, it often falls in the middle of the pack in the used market.
The Acura TSX offers a more engaging driving experience and slightly better reliability. The BMW 3 Series provides superior handling but can be more expensive to maintain. The Mazda3 is a more affordable and reliable option with sporty handling. If reliability and lower running costs are priorities, the Mazda3 or Acura TSX might be better choices. If a blend of safety, comfort, and unique design is desired, the S40 remains a compelling option. However, be prepared for potentially higher repair costs compared to Japanese competitors.

Final Verdict: Is the 2007 Volvo S40 a Good Sedan?

The 2007 Volvo S40 is ideal for someone seeking a safe, comfortable, and stylish compact sedan with a touch of Scandinavian flair. It's a worthwhile purchase in the used market, especially if you prioritize safety and distinctive design. The T5 model offers a performance boost for those seeking more excitement. However, be sure to have a pre-purchase inspection performed by a qualified mechanic to assess the condition of the engine, transmission, and electronics. Look for models with documented maintenance records and avoid examples with a history of significant problems. The 2.4i is a more fuel-efficient choice, while the T5 AWD offers added all-weather capability.

Great longevity

Car has been very reliable and dependable. It does have the typical Volvo sunroof drain issue that needs to be addressed annually or else you will have a pool of water in your footwell. Went thru drivers side bearings more than usual but truly that's about it. Fantastic reliability and safety.

Drives better than most modern compact sedans

Car drives great, more than adequate power. Pretty good on gas. Nice torque hills are not an issue. Only selling because I own 2 others.

Efficient, safe and sporty

Fun and value for the money, would recommend and buy this model again. Missing a Bluetooth feature but overall can’t find much else to want except no pins in the floor for mats.

The best vehicle I?ve ever owned

I love my S40. I bought it with a manual transmission and all wheel drive and I don?t regret it at all. The engine is responsive and quick, the car has loads of torque across the entire rev range, and the turbo is quick. The chassis is firm. There?s almost no body roll or chassis movements over bumps and potholes. The all wheel drive system along with Volvo safety tech allows me to drive normal roadway speeds in snowy or wet conditions. The interior is minimalistic and well laid out with extremely comfortable seats. I absolutely love this car.

One Owner, 100% Volvo-Serviced S40 T5, $4,900

This is an excellent. inexpensive, reliable , safe Volvo. It has been owned for the past 10 years by my 84-year-old Mother in Derry, NH. She had it serviced at the dealership where she bought it (Exeter, NH) the entire time. We recently replaced two tires and put in a new battery. The T5 version of the S40 has great pickup and handling, as well as the usual Volvo weight and solid, safe construction and multiple airbags.
