What Problems Does the 2011 Volvo S40 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2011 Volvo S40 often revolve around electrical issues. Some owners have reported problems with the climate control failing, power windows malfunctioning, and issues with the central locking system. These electrical problems can be intermittent and difficult to diagnose. Another area of concern is the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system, particularly in the T5 models. A clogged PCV system can lead to oil leaks and other engine problems.
Recalls for the 2011 Volvo S40 have been issued for potential fuel pump flange cracking which could lead to fuel leakage and fire risk. It's essential to check the vehicle's VIN against the NHTSA database to verify if all applicable recalls have been addressed.
Long-term reliability concerns often center around the cost of parts and labor. Volvo parts tend to be more expensive than those for domestic or Japanese vehicles, and finding qualified Volvo technicians can sometimes be a challenge, especially in rural areas. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and addressing issues promptly, is crucial to maximizing the lifespan of the S40.

How long will the 2011 Volvo S40 last?

With good maintenance, a 2011 Volvo S40 can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report reaching this milestone and beyond with proper care. However, long-term durability depends heavily on adherence to the recommended maintenance schedule. Weaknesses over time include potential suspension wear (especially bushings and struts), aging rubber components (hoses and belts), and the aforementioned electrical gremlins. Regular fluid changes (oil, transmission, coolant) are critical for longevity. Neglecting maintenance will significantly shorten the lifespan of the vehicle.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2011 Volvo S40 prioritizes safety, a hallmark of the brand. Standard safety features include anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), traction control, and front side airbags and side curtain airbags. Driver-assistance features are limited compared to modern cars, but some models may have included optional features like rear parking sensors.

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) are generally good for the 2011 Volvo S40. It earned "Good" ratings in most crash tests. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) also gave it favorable ratings. These safety ratings contribute significantly to the S40's appeal.

2011 Volvo S40 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2011 Volvo S40 had an MSRP ranging from approximately $23,000 to $30,000, depending on the trim level and options. Currently, used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $12,000. Depreciation has been significant, which makes it an attractive option on the used market. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, service history, and trim level. Models with lower mileage, a clean title, and comprehensive service records command higher prices. The T5 R-Design, due to its sporty appeal, often retains slightly more value.

2011 Volvo S40 Cost of Ownership

The 2011 Volvo S40 can be moderately expensive to own long-term. Insurance costs are generally average for its class. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially with the 2.4i engine. However, maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to pricier parts and specialized labor. While fuel-efficient, potential for pricier repairs makes diligent maintenance crucial. Budgeting for unexpected repairs is advisable when considering a used S40.

2011 Volvo S40 Insurance

Insurance for a 2011 Volvo S40 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2011 Volvo S40 Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2011 Volvo S40 competes with cars like the Acura TSX, Audi A3, BMW 3 Series, and Volkswagen GTI. Compared to the Acura TSX, the S40 offers a more distinctive design but may not match the TSX's renowned reliability. Against the Audi A3 and BMW 3 Series, the S40 is more affordable but lacks the same level of performance and prestige. The Volkswagen GTI offers superior performance and handling at a similar price point.
In terms of features, the S40 offers a solid set of standard safety features but lacks some of the advanced technology found in newer rivals. Reliability is generally good, but repairs can be more costly. For buyers prioritizing performance and sporty handling, the GTI is a better choice. For those seeking ultimate reliability, the Acura TSX might be preferable. However, the S40 stands out for its unique Scandinavian design and Volvo's reputation for safety. A similar alternative would be the Lexus IS 250 for refined luxury and reliability, though at a potentially higher price.

Final Verdict: Is the 2011 Volvo S40 a Good Sedan?

The 2011 Volvo S40 is ideal for buyers who prioritize safety, distinctive design, and a comfortable ride at an affordable price point in the used market. It's worth buying if you find a well-maintained example with a thorough service history. The T5 trim offers a nice balance of performance and features. It's best suited for individuals or small families who don't require a lot of rear passenger space. Be prepared for potentially higher maintenance costs compared to some rivals. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified Volvo mechanic is highly recommended to identify any potential issues.

No issues, super solid, safe car

We've had no issues with the car since we bought it. First car I've bought where I didn't have issues and I've owned many! The car is heavy and safe. You feel like you are driving a high quality car. Its not light and flimsy like so many cars today.

Another great Swede design

My prior car was a SAAB 9-5. It never gave me a problem or left me stranded. After 10-years and over 100k miles, it was time to get something new. The Volvo S40 is very similar to the SAAB 9-3 (just a bit less trunk and rear seat leg room than the 9-5). Volvo has an attractive "all inclusive" warranty for 60 mos / 60k miles (includes brakes, oil changes, etc., only tires are excluded). The ride is nice and tight, the T5 has plenty of power, and mpg is good for the size by real world comparison. Many very good intuitive features, and a handful of helpful personal programming choices (e.g. one-click on remote opens all doors, or just drivers door) Bluetooth for phone interface is easy and works great (another user choice is whether to mute radio on call). The USB interface with an iPod is good, but lacks a few advanced features I would have expected - don't know how this compares to other cars. The key with built-in remote is, by today's standards, pretty big, but not awful - I believe the S60 and above come with keyless ignition - the 2012 S40 may also. All controls and guages are handy and easy to access. The SAAB had the time, date and day of the week on the display, where the Volvo only displays the time (and in two places... why?) Interior comfort and design is very good, but the seats, although fully adjustable, are certainly not awesome - then again, it's not a Mercedes S Class sports car. Bottom Line: I'm very satisfied, and would buy it again. A very affordable, sporty, practical, safe, and mechanically reliable car - what more can you ask.

S40 T5 - last year for this model sold in the U.S.

I picked up a 2011 gun metal blue S40 T5 which is the last year they will sell the S40 in North America. This is due to not selling enough units, so they are focusing on the s60, s80, c30, and SUV models here. This car includes 36k free maintenance which covers everything but the tires. I have to say, i love the styling and this car is very comfortable and fun to drive. It's quick off the line, but i'm thinking of giving it a boost with the dealer installed software upgrade which will take the car from 227 to 250HP and doesn't void any warranties. I like driving this car so much my next will probably be a Volvo as well. I had a minor problem with ABS, but they gave me a loaner S60 T5 to drive while they fixed it at no charge to me, so no complaints. The service guys are very professional.
