The 2013 Mitsubishi Lancer is a compact sedan, part of a long-running series known for its sporty styling and available all-wheel drive (AWD). Model years span from 2008 to 2017 for this generation. Key trims include the DE, ES, SE, GT, and Ralliart (though Ralliart availability varied by year). Pricing ranged from around $16,000 to $25,000 when new. Its rally-inspired design and available AWD in select trims made it stand out, appealing to buyers seeking a more engaging driving experience than other economy cars.
The Good

The 2013 Lancer offers sporty handling and an aggressive design (emotional appeal). Available AWD provides enhanced traction and confidence in various weather conditions. It's known for being a relatively affordable and reliable compact car (practical appeal). Fuel efficiency is decent, and it offers reasonable comfort for daily driving.

The Bad

The 2013 Lancer's weaknesses include a somewhat dated interior with lower-quality materials compared to rivals. The base engine can feel underpowered. Road noise can be noticeable at higher speeds. Some owners have reported issues with the continuously variable transmission (CVT) in certain models, so a thorough inspection and test drive are essential.

What Problems Does the 2013 Mitsubishi Lancer Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2013 Mitsubishi Lancer include issues with the continuously variable transmission (CVT), particularly in models equipped with it. Some owners have experienced shuddering, hesitation, or even transmission failure. Regular CVT fluid changes are crucial to prevent these issues. Other common problems involve the electrical system, such as malfunctioning sensors or issues with the infotainment system. Premature wear of brake components has also been reported. Recalls for the 2013 Lancer have included issues related to airbags and potential fuel leakage problems. Long-term reliability can be a concern, particularly with the CVT and turbocharger (if equipped). Rust can also be a problem in regions with harsh winters and road salt. Checking the vehicle's history for recall completion and addressing any reported issues is essential before purchase. It's also wise to have a pre-purchase inspection performed by a qualified mechanic.

How long will the 2013 Mitsubishi Lancer last?

With proper maintenance, a 2013 Mitsubishi Lancer can reasonably be expected to reach 150,000-200,000 miles or provide 10-15 years of service. Longevity heavily depends on consistent maintenance, especially regular oil changes, CVT fluid changes (if applicable), and addressing any issues promptly. Long-term durability can be affected by rust, particularly in areas with road salt. The CVT transmission is a potential weak point, as is the turbocharger on the Ralliart model. Regular inspections and preventative maintenance are key to maximizing its lifespan. Neglecting maintenance will significantly shorten its lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2013 Mitsubishi Lancer offers a relatively basic tech and entertainment package compared to newer vehicles. Standard features typically include a CD player, auxiliary audio input, and basic audio system. Higher trims might include a touchscreen infotainment system, Bluetooth connectivity, and a USB port. Navigation was an optional feature. Driver-assistance features were limited, with standard antilock brakes, stability control, and traction control. Higher trims might offer features like fog lights. Safety features include front and side airbags, as well as side curtain airbags.

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) should be checked for specific scores related to the 2013 model year, but generally, the Lancer performed acceptably in most crash tests for its class. Optional features could include a Rockford Fosgate premium audio system and upgraded interior trim. It lacks modern driver-assistance technologies like automatic emergency braking or lane departure warning, which are common in newer cars.

2013 Mitsubishi Lancer Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2013 Mitsubishi Lancer had a starting price around $16,000 for the base DE trim, ranging up to approximately $25,000 for the Ralliart model. Current used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $12,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Lancer has depreciated significantly over time, which is typical for compact cars. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, accident history, and trim level. Ralliart models, due to their performance and rarity, tend to hold their value better than base trims. The availability of AWD also increases resale value in certain regions.

2013 Mitsubishi Lancer Cost of Ownership

The 2013 Mitsubishi Lancer generally has relatively affordable insurance costs compared to sportier or luxury vehicles. Fuel economy is decent, but not exceptional. Maintenance costs are average for a compact car, though CVT fluid changes (if applicable) can add to the expense. Repair costs can be higher if major components like the CVT or turbocharger (Ralliart) fail. Overall, the Lancer can be considered reasonably economical to own, but potential CVT and turbocharger issues should be factored into long-term ownership cost considerations.

How Does the 2013 Mitsubishi Lancer Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2013 Mitsubishi Lancer competes with vehicles like the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, and Hyundai Elantra. In terms of performance, the Lancer Ralliart offers a sportier experience than most rivals, but the base models are less engaging. The Civic and Mazda3 generally offer better handling and a more refined driving experience. Feature-wise, the Lancer lags behind some competitors, particularly in tech and driver-assistance features. Reliability is generally acceptable, but the CVT transmission can be a concern. Price-wise, the Lancer is often more affordable than the Civic or Corolla. For similar alternatives, consider the Mazda3 for its sporty handling and well-appointed interior, or the Hyundai Elantra for its value and features. The Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla are also excellent choices for reliability and fuel efficiency. If performance is a priority, a used Subaru WRX might be considered, though it will come at a higher price point. The Lancer's appeal lies in its available AWD and unique styling, but other options offer a better overall package.

Final Verdict: Is the 2013 Mitsubishi Lancer a Good Sedan?

The 2013 Mitsubishi Lancer is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a sporty-looking compact car, especially those who value available all-wheel drive. It can be worth buying used if found in good condition with a clean maintenance history and a pre-purchase inspection. Avoid models with known CVT transmission issues or high mileage without evidence of proper maintenance. The GT or Ralliart trims offer a more engaging driving experience but may require more maintenance. Overall, it's a decent option if affordability and AWD are primary concerns, but be aware of its limitations compared to more modern and refined rivals.

Very Reliable Car

This car never gave me any issues. Is very reliable and rides very smooth. I have made modifications to it listed in my listing. This car is for someone who enjoys cars and making modifications. The exhaust is louder than stock, but not too loud that the ride is not enjoyable.

Love my Lancer

Glides down the road. Hard to restrain from dipping through traffic. Sound system better than one I have at home. When my old Lancer got multiple refusals of repairs from mechanics, I searched for a new one, holding my ground to all who advised me against a Mitsubishi. I love my Lancer, and feel xxxx bad xxx to own a second one of this specially made for me kind of a car! Feel safe in the car, great gas mileage, quick pick up, the shape of the car seems to be an extention of my actual body as it is too easy to swoop the vehicle down the road. Would recommend.

Inexpensive Commuter Car with Limited Frills

I leased a 2013 Lancer SE. I initially liked it's snappy driving characteristics, decent power and all wheel drive. At the time, the only other car on the market in this category was the Impreza. With the two trims compared side to side - The Lancer simply had more oomph. The Impreza got better gas mileage but they were both dreary on the inside. At least the Lancer looked good and provided some fun and stability (and fun) on snowy nights. Best of all, I leased it so I didn't have to keep it because at the end of the day, the cons truly out weigh the pro on this car. Pros: Smart Exterior, AWD, Snappy Handling, Decent Power Cons: Dreadful Interior, Extremely Loud Interior, Terrible CVT, Lack of Optional Technology, Dot Matrix Display.

Great Value Car, But Don't Expect Anything Extra

I bought this vehicle used with 35k miles on it and have doubled that in 2 years so far. In that time, I've never had to take it into the shop for anything other than an oil change. It's a great starter car if you don't mind sacrificing some of the bells and whistles that come standard with most new cars.

Bargain Evo

Seriously. The Lancer Ralliart is a bargain Evo because: - Turbo - All-wheel drive - Twin-clutch It is down on power to the Evo since it utilizes a single scroll turbo instead of a twin and it doesn't have the Super AWD or S-Sport that the MR has but it does get the same insurance rates as a base model Lancer. It's a car of compromise. Two things that I wish I did know before purchasing the car is that servicing the transmission is costly (about $900 every 25-30k) and if you're lucky you'll average 24 mpg. Other than that though, it's practical, looks good, and is pretty easy to tune & mod (if you're into that).
