The 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer is a compact sedan known for its sporty handling and rally-inspired design. Part of the Lancer's fourth generation, produced from 2007-2017, it offered a blend of practicality and performance. Key trims included the DE, ES, GTS, and Ralliart, with the Evolution (Evo) serving as the high-performance variant (though technically a separate model). When new, the Lancer's price range typically started around $15,000 and went up depending on the trim. Its affordability and available all-wheel drive made it a popular choice.
The Good

The 2011 Lancer offered sporty handling and an engaging driving experience (appealing to emotional buyers). It also provided a relatively affordable price point and decent fuel economy (attracting practical buyers). While not the most luxurious, its design was modern and the availability of all-wheel drive in some trims offered enhanced safety and capability.

The Bad

The 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer's weaknesses include a somewhat underwhelming interior with hard plastics, limited rear passenger space, and potentially higher maintenance costs compared to some competitors. Watch out for potential issues with the continuously variable transmission (CVT) in certain trims, as well as rust, especially in areas with harsh winters.

What Problems Does the 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer Have?

The 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer, while generally reliable, has some frequently reported problems. Issues with the continuously variable transmission (CVT) in models equipped with it are a concern, with some owners reporting slipping or shuddering, particularly at higher mileage. Rust can be a significant problem, especially in regions with road salt use during winter; inspect the undercarriage and body panels carefully. Some owners have reported issues with the air conditioning system, including compressor failure or refrigerant leaks. The electronically controlled power steering system can also experience failures. Recalls for the 2011 Lancer have included issues related to airbags and potential fuel leakage. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the CVT transmission and rust prevention. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes and rustproofing, is crucial for extending the lifespan of the vehicle. It's worth noting that earlier model years of this generation (2008-2010) had similar reported issues, so prior maintenance records are especially important.

How long will the 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer last?

With diligent maintenance, a 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer can realistically reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles, potentially lasting 12-15 years. However, neglecting scheduled maintenance significantly reduces its lifespan. Regular oil changes, transmission fluid flushes (especially for CVT models), and addressing rust proactively are critical. The CVT transmission remains a long-term weak point; preventative maintenance can help, but eventual replacement might be necessary. Rust remains a major durability concern, particularly in colder climates. Engine reliability is generally good, but issues can arise if proper care is not taken.

Negative Owner Reviews
PeteB614
I was drawn more into it's exterior design, but unfortunately hadn't really done my research regarding the performance. It's a pretty reliable good choice for a guy in his early to mid 20's before life gets too real. Fuel economy is surprisingly good.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer's built-in tech and entertainment features were fairly basic for its time. Standard features included a CD player with MP3 playback, and auxiliary audio input. Higher trims offered a Rockford Fosgate premium sound system with a subwoofer. Navigation was available as an option on some trims. Driver-assistance features were limited; ABS and stability control were standard. Safety features included front airbags, side-impact airbags, and side curtain airbags.
Crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) should be researched based on the specific model year. While specifics can vary by year and testing methodology, generally the Lancer performed acceptably in frontal and side impact tests. Optional features beyond the higher-end sound system and navigation included things like Bluetooth connectivity (depending on the trim and package), upgraded interior trim, and exterior styling enhancements. It's worth noting that the tech offerings were not cutting-edge compared to some rivals.

2011 Mitsubishi Lancer Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer's prices ranged from around $15,000 for the base DE trim to over $22,000 for the GTS, excluding the Ralliart and Evolution models. Used market prices in 2024 vary greatly depending on condition, mileage, and trim, typically ranging from $4,000 to $10,000. The Lancer has depreciated significantly due to its age, higher mileage, and the availability of newer, more technologically advanced compact cars. Factors affecting resale value include the car's condition (rust-free examples command a premium), maintenance history, and trim level (GTS and Ralliart models tend to hold their value better).

2011 Mitsubishi Lancer Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer are generally moderate. Fuel costs are reasonable for the 2.0L models but can be higher for the 2.4L and turbocharged Ralliart. Maintenance and repair costs can be moderate to high, particularly if the CVT transmission requires servicing or replacement. Rust repair can also add to long-term ownership costs. Overall, while initially affordable, the Lancer's long-term ownership costs can be higher than some competitors due to potential maintenance and repair needs.

How Does the 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer competed with the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, and Hyundai Elantra. In terms of performance, the Lancer GTS and Ralliart offered a sportier driving experience than the Civic or Corolla, but the base models were less refined. Feature-wise, the Lancer lagged behind some rivals, especially in terms of interior quality and available technology. Reliability is generally considered average; the Civic and Corolla are known for superior reliability. Price-wise, the Lancer was often more affordable than the Civic or Corolla, but the Mazda3 offered a similar blend of sportiness and value.
Alternatives to consider include the Mazda3 (better handling and interior), Honda Civic (superior reliability and resale value), and Hyundai Elantra (more features for the price). If sporty handling isn't a primary concern, the Toyota Corolla is a more practical and reliable choice. The Subaru Impreza also provides all-wheel drive, a key selling point that only the Lancer Ralliart offered in this segment at the time, but the Impreza may have a higher price point.

Final Verdict: Is the 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer a Good Sedan?

The 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a sporty-looking and engaging compact sedan. It's worth buying *used* if you can find a well-maintained example with a clean service history, *preferably a GTS model for a better driving experience*. Scrutinize the vehicle for rust, and have the CVT transmission inspected by a qualified mechanic before purchase. Avoid high-mileage examples with questionable maintenance. While not as refined or reliable as some competitors, the Lancer offers a unique blend of affordability and sporty character, making it a decent choice for the right buyer who knows what to look for.

Great Car, buy it and drive it. Turn key car.

2010 Lancer GTS 2.4 CVT. I changed spark plugs and coils, which gave it a lot more power. Does roughly 30 mpg even around town. 41k miles on it now and seems to run great. ABS ASC sensors do get dirty fairly quickly on these cars. Power wash inside of wheels every so often takes care of that problem. 61 yrs old and I love the car and enjoy driving it. I run the xxxx out of it!

It's a very nice car!

It's a simple car to figure out. There are little bits a features found all around the car that make driving simpler and more fun. One gripe I do have is that the AUX plugin is AUX to RCA, it isn't hard to find it's just a bit odd. Good fuel economy especially when you're on the highway , up to 430 miles on a full tank of gas. Everyone I've run into loves the look of the car. Even though I'm 6' 2" I can still fit in the car and it's comfortable, Just the steering wheel doesn't come in and out it only goes up and down so it's harder to find a comfortable position for the steering wheel sometimes. People also say it's a pretty comfortable car even though legroom is a bit scarse in the back seats but it doesn't seem people are uncomfortable. 128,000 miles and still going strong.

Junk cRs

Had the car for three years. Loved it at first but then noticed that it wasn?t a good as I thought. With 40 thousand miles on it the clutch went then again at 60 after that I put in a after market clutch and it was good again. With hundreds of horrible story on forums and pages of how thee car have shot clutches Mitsubishi did nothing to try and make it right. I spent countless hours on the phone just to be talked to like I was a xxxxxxx. The area manager for New England is a joke with horrible people skills. Finally after months of xxxxxxxx the service manager at Mitsubishi gave me 250 off my next service. Thanks I only just spent almost 4000 in six months on faulty xxxx. I would not recommend this car

7 years

I have owned my 2011 Lancer for over 7 years now! Never had any major problems just a few recalls here and there. I had my transmission oil changed from a local machanic shop and transmission started over heating. I took my Lancer to the dealership to have it changed after that and haven't had the problem since and that was about 3 years ago. Dealership is pricy but I guess it is worth it in the long run. Also when I first purchased I had problems with the air conditioner but my warranty took care of that. Overall I have enjoyed my lancer. Performance could be a little better along with interior design which seems very cheap to me.

Great sporty sedan

The car drove great for may years, soft comfortable inside with paddle shifters and Automatic manual transmission, great gas mileage, reliable and roomy, the trunk was much bigger than expected and back seats drop to create even more room. highly recommend.
