The 2017 Mitsubishi Lancer, a compact sedan, represents the final model year of the Lancer in the US market. Its lineage dates back to the early 1970s, evolving through several generations. Key trims included the ES, SE, and SEL. Known for its sporty styling, available all-wheel drive (AWD) on certain trims, and accessible price point, the Lancer offered a blend of practicality and personality. Pricing ranged from around $18,000 to $22,000 when new.
The Good

The 2017 Lancer boasts appealing styling and available AWD, satisfying emotional desires. Its practical advantages include a reputation for decent reliability, affordable pricing, and reasonable fuel economy. While not a performance powerhouse, it offers a competent driving experience for daily commuting and represents a solid value proposition for budget-conscious buyers. Comfort is adequate for its class.

The Bad

The 2017 Lancer's weaknesses include an outdated interior with subpar materials, a less-than-refined engine, and a relatively small rear seat. Its fuel economy, while decent, isn't class-leading. The CVT transmission in some models can feel sluggish. Watch out for rust, especially in areas with harsh winters, and ensure regular maintenance has been performed.

What Problems Does the 2017 Mitsubishi Lancer Have?

The 2017 Mitsubishi Lancer has generally demonstrated reasonable reliability, but some common issues have been reported. Rust can be a concern, particularly in areas that use road salt. Inspect the undercarriage and body panels carefully. The CVT transmission, especially in earlier model years, has occasionally been reported to have issues with hesitation or premature failure. Regular fluid changes are crucial. Some owners have reported issues with the electronic components, such as the infotainment system or sensors. Check for proper functioning of all electronic features. Recalls have been issued for Lancer models over the years, so it's important to check the VIN with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed. Long-term reliability concerns primarily revolve around the CVT transmission and potential rust issues. Proper maintenance and addressing any issues promptly can help mitigate these concerns. The 2.4L engine is considered a bit more robust than the 2.0L. Some owners report premature wear of brake components.

How long will the 2017 Mitsubishi Lancer last?

With good maintenance, a 2017 Mitsubishi Lancer can realistically reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more, potentially lasting 10-15 years. Key to longevity is adhering to the recommended maintenance schedule, especially regarding oil changes and CVT fluid replacements (if applicable). Long-term durability can be affected by rust, particularly in colder climates. The CVT transmission is often cited as a potential weak point. Address any warning signs or unusual noises promptly. Engine-wise, both the 2.0L and 2.4L are generally reliable if maintained, but the 2.4L tends to be more robust. Regular inspections are recommended to catch and address potential problems early.

I am not married nor do I have kids. This car would be great for long distance, family trips. Good trunk room and spacious back seats. I got the top line model with a sunroof and head seats. And I love the Rockford Fosgate sound system! Got a 10" subwoofer in the trunk! It PUMPS the bass! It's got a part time 4WD/AWD which is nice in sedan. It helped me get thru some snow in Maryland. The CVT does make funny noises. But mechanic said it was normal. Ride is not bad. It is sports tuned after all. The interior is kind of dated. Steering wheel only has a tilt function, not telescope. Just up and down but can't pull the steering wheel close to me. Great A/C and heating. The leather is kind of cheap though. Handles great! Gas mileage 36 mpg on HWY! That's not bad. Worse mileage was 18 mpg CITY but it was stop and go traffic. DC is notorious for that! But not bad at all for a 4 door sedan for under $20k!

This car was excellent, and had everything in it we wanted, EXCEPT for the fact that it had NO rear window windshield wiper, which I REALLY missed having. But the vehicle drove well and handled well, although it was lacking sufficient noise soundproofing to keep out excess road noise.
Jenny
I loved the car everything was great from the year to the mileage to the interior, it was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you

This xxxx driver window keeps getting stuck down. Doesn’t want to roll up. Took it to the dealership 3 times now and they say they don’t know why. I want answers.

The car is great, it has great handling, good braking, but there is one glaring problem. The cvt is a piece of crap, this is my 4th mitsubishi with the cvt transmission and the transmission has gone out as it did on all the others. If it came with a stick and 4 wheel drive, it would have been a great little car. The cvt turns a great car into a piece of crap car. I'm going to sell it and never buy another mitsubishi, or any other car with the same transmission.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2017 Mitsubishi Lancer's tech and safety features are relatively basic compared to newer vehicles. Standard features on the base ES trim include a rearview camera, a 6.1-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity, and a USB port. Higher trims (SE and SEL) add features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility (on the SE and SEL), keyless entry and ignition, and a six-speaker or Rockford Fosgate sound system.

Driver-assistance features are limited. It generally lacks advanced safety technologies like automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, or blind-spot monitoring, which are common in newer cars.

Safety features include standard airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and stability control. Crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) should be reviewed for the specific model year. While the Lancer generally performed adequately in crash tests, its aging design meant it wasn't always at the forefront of safety technology. The optional Rockford Fosgate sound system provides a decent audio experience. Overall, the Lancer's tech and safety features are functional but not cutting-edge.

2017 Mitsubishi Lancer Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2017 Mitsubishi Lancer ranged from approximately $18,000 to $22,000 depending on the trim level and options. As a used vehicle, prices currently range from roughly $8,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Lancer has depreciated significantly due to its age, brand reputation, and the availability of newer, more technologically advanced competitors. Factors affecting resale value include the car's condition, mileage, service history, and whether it's a desirable trim level (like the SEL with AWD). Lancers in excellent condition with low mileage and a clean title will command higher prices. The market for used Lancers is smaller compared to more popular compact sedans.

2017 Mitsubishi Lancer Cost of Ownership

The 2017 Mitsubishi Lancer is generally considered economical to own. Insurance costs are typically lower than average for its class. Fuel economy is reasonable, especially with the 2.0L engine. Maintenance costs are also relatively affordable, as parts are readily available and repairs are usually straightforward. However, potential CVT transmission issues and rust concerns could lead to higher repair bills down the line. Overall, the Lancer presents a budget-friendly option for those seeking affordable transportation, but diligent maintenance is essential to minimize potential long-term costs.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2017 Mitsubishi Lancer Compare to Other Sedan?

Compared to rivals like the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and Mazda3, the 2017 Mitsubishi Lancer generally falls short in terms of performance, interior refinement, and available technology. While the Lancer offers a lower price point and available AWD (a rarity in its class), the Civic, Corolla, and Mazda3 provide more modern designs, better fuel economy, and superior driving experiences. In terms of reliability, the Lancer is generally decent but may not match the long-term dependability of the Corolla or Civic. Features-wise, the Lancer lacks many of the advanced driver-assistance systems found in its competitors. For those prioritizing budget and available AWD, the Lancer might be considered. However, for a more well-rounded and modern compact sedan, the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, or even a Hyundai Elantra or Kia Forte are better alternatives. These competitors offer a more refined driving experience, better fuel efficiency, and a wider range of features. The Lancer's main advantage is its lower price, but that comes with compromises in other areas.

Final Verdict: Is the 2017 Mitsubishi Lancer a Good Sedan?

The 2017 Mitsubishi Lancer is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking affordable transportation and potentially all-wheel drive in colder climates. It's worth buying *used* if the price is significantly lower than competitors and a thorough inspection reveals no major issues. Specific trims like the SEL with AWD offer the most features. However, be aware of the Lancer's dated interior, limited safety tech, and potential for rust or CVT transmission problems. Consider a Lancer only if a reliable, well-maintained example can be found at a price that reflects its age and limitations. Otherwise, a newer, more refined competitor is a better long-term investment, even if it costs a bit more upfront.

Worst transmission ever invented (CVT)

The car has problems. Already had both window motors replaced 2 times. Interior lights pulsate. Blue tooth don't work right. Throttle response is what ever the car decides to do. The car has electrical problems and the Dealership wont fix the problem. They tell me nothing is wrong but yet I'm having problems.

What a step up from a Lexus hybrid!

It is a fabulous car! With the spirit and revs of a Ferarri for the price of a Nissan... it is a great example of advanced Japanese engineering and reliable bodywork and chassis. My 16 year old son is IN LOVE with this car. I have been in sports cars and this one makes my sunglasses fly ff my head just the same!
