The 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer is a compact car known for its sporty styling and rally-inspired heritage. Offered as a sedan, the Lancer's model years span from the early 2000s to 2017. Key trims for 2012 included the DE, ES, SE, GT, and Ralliart. Originally, prices ranged from around $15,000 to $25,000, depending on trim and options. Its affordability, sharp looks, and available all-wheel-drive in some trims made it a popular choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking a bit of performance.
The Good

The 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer offers a sporty design that appeals to emotional buyers, while its affordability and decent fuel economy provide practical value. The Lancer's performance, especially in higher trims like the GT and Ralliart, offers engaging handling. Known for decent reliability, it provides a cost-effective entry into the compact car segment.

The Bad

Weaknesses of the 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer include a somewhat dated interior with hard plastics and limited rear seat space. The base engine can feel underpowered. Watch out for potential CVT transmission issues in some models. Rust can also be a concern in areas with harsh winters. Overall refinement isn't as high as some competitors.

What Problems Does the 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer include issues with the continuously variable transmission (CVT), particularly in models equipped with it. Some owners have reported hesitation, jerky acceleration, or even complete failure. Rust can be a concern, especially in areas that use road salt during winter. Early models experienced issues with the paint, leading to peeling or fading. The 2012 Lancer had a few recalls, including issues with the windshield wiper motor and potential fuel leakage. Long-term reliability can be affected by adherence to maintenance schedules, with neglect potentially leading to increased repair costs. The Ralliart model, with its turbocharged engine and more complex drivetrain, may require more specialized and expensive maintenance. Regular oil changes and transmission fluid flushes are crucial for maximizing the lifespan of the engine and transmission.

How long will the 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer last?

With proper maintenance, a 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer can realistically reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding this mileage with regular servicing. However, neglecting maintenance, particularly oil changes and transmission fluid flushes (especially for CVT models), can significantly shorten its lifespan. Long-term durability weaknesses include potential rust issues, especially in colder climates, and the aforementioned CVT transmission problems. The interior may also show wear and tear over time. Regular preventative maintenance is key to maximizing the vehicle's lifespan and minimizing potential issues.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer offered a relatively basic tech package for its time. Standard features included a CD player, auxiliary audio input, and power windows and locks. Higher trims added features like a Rockford Fosgate premium audio system, Bluetooth connectivity, and a USB port. Navigation was an available option. Driver-assistance features were limited, with standard features including anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), and traction control. Side and curtain airbags were also standard.

The 2012 Lancer received mixed crash-test ratings. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave it an overall rating of 4 out of 5 stars. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave it good ratings in most categories, but marginal in the small overlap front crash test (conducted in later years, not initially).

Optional features included a sunroof, upgraded alloy wheels, and various appearance packages. Overall, the Lancer's tech and safety features were adequate for its time, but not particularly advanced compared to some competitors.

2012 Mitsubishi Lancer Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer ranged from approximately $15,000 for the base DE trim to around $25,000 for the Ralliart. Current used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $12,000 depending on condition, mileage, and trim. The Lancer has experienced significant depreciation due to its age, reliability concerns, and the Mitsubishi brand's overall depreciation rate. Factors affecting resale value include the car's condition, mileage, maintenance history, and whether it's a higher trim level like the GT or Ralliart. All-wheel-drive models (SE, Ralliart) generally hold their value slightly better in regions with snowy climates.

2012 Mitsubishi Lancer Cost of Ownership

The 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer is generally considered relatively economical to own. Insurance costs are typically lower than average for its class. Fuel economy is decent, especially with the base engine. Maintenance costs are moderate, but potential CVT transmission repairs can be expensive. Parts availability is generally good, but some specific Ralliart components may be pricier. Overall, while not the absolute cheapest, the Lancer offers reasonable long-term ownership costs, unless major repairs become necessary.

2012 Mitsubishi Lancer Insurance

Insurance for a 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer competes with cars like the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, and Ford Focus. Compared to the Civic and Corolla, the Lancer offers a sportier driving experience but falls short in terms of interior quality and overall refinement. The Mazda3 provides a similar level of sportiness with a more upscale interior. The Ford Focus offered more advanced technology features, but its reliability was questionable.

In terms of price, the Lancer was generally more affordable than the Civic, Corolla, and Mazda3 when new. However, its resale value is lower. Regarding reliability, the Corolla and Civic are generally considered more reliable than the Lancer, particularly regarding the CVT transmission.

Alternatives to the 2012 Lancer include the Mazda3 (for a better balance of sportiness and refinement), the Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla (for superior reliability and resale value), or a used Acura TSX (for a more luxurious experience at a similar price point). The Hyundai Elantra is also worth considering for its value and features.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer a Good Sedan?

The 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer is ideal for budget-conscious buyers who prioritize sporty styling and decent handling over interior refinement and advanced technology. It's worth buying as a used car if found in good condition with a well-documented maintenance history. Avoid models with known CVT issues or excessive rust. The GT trim offers a good balance of performance and features. While not the most reliable or technologically advanced option, the 2012 Lancer can be a worthwhile choice for those seeking an affordable and engaging compact car. Consider a pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic before committing to a purchase.

The Car I’ve Been Searching For

The car has been an absolute joy every time I turn the key. It’s hard to not even want to be in the driver seat. I can’t wait to make this a trophy winner like my last Lancer. Follow me on IG @jammacity2010

Not a bad little car, drives well, good handling.

Not too comfortable or durable, but drives smooth enough and handles well. I would call it reliable and a decent value. Good fuel economy as well.

Most reliable car I am owning

It is pretty good. After I got it last November, nothing bad happened to me until now. It always runs so smoothly and quiet. The room inside the car is good, and the trunk is big. Anyway, it accompanies me so well during the past year when I stay in America. I like it very much!

Fun first sports car

I bought this car as my very first sports car to enter the world of all things fast and fun. For the few years I had the car it was taken care of accordingly and in return it took car of me. The comfort of the car was great although some long drives would be a bit uncomforting after a while, my every day commute to work never gave me an issue. The inside is made well the best part is digital display that welcomes you every time you turn the vehicle on and says good bye when you turn off. While driving I notice a shift assist on digital display as I was driving the car. As I drove the car would help with shifts to give the be possible gas mileage and cause the least amount of wear to the trans as possible which was a great touch. Although the car doesn't come with all wheel and the turbo engine with the right tires, and proper additions to the car driving it becomes a great experience, quick, shifty, and sounds amazing. Great ride, great tech, price needs a bit of a change.
