The Good

The 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor offered a comfortable ride and distinctive styling, appealing to emotional buyers. Its V6 engine provided adequate performance for daily driving. Practically, it presented good value for money, with a spacious interior and available all-wheel drive for added capability. While not the most efficient, its reliability was generally considered decent for its age.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor include potential issues with the automatic transmission, especially with higher mileage. Owners should also watch out for rust, particularly in areas with harsh winters. Some report electrical problems and premature wear of suspension components. Fuel economy is also not a strong point.

What Problems Does the 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor often revolve around the 4-speed automatic transmission. Some owners have experienced slipping, harsh shifting, or complete failure, especially at higher mileage. Rust is also a common concern, particularly in regions with road salt. The undercarriage, wheel wells, and body panels are susceptible. Electrical issues, such as malfunctioning sensors or problems with the power windows and locks, have also been reported.

Long-term reliability concerns include the potential for engine oil leaks and premature wear of suspension components like ball joints and struts. Recalls for the 2004 Endeavor were issued for issues like potential fuel leakage due to faulty fuel tank components. It's essential to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls before purchasing. While the engine itself is generally robust, the transmission is the most significant reliability concern. Regular maintenance, including transmission fluid changes, is crucial to mitigating potential problems. However, even with meticulous care, transmission issues can still arise with age and mileage. Checking for rust is vital.

How long will the 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor last?

Given its age, a well-maintained 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor could reasonably reach 200,000 miles or more. However, much depends on the previous owner's maintenance habits. Regular oil changes, timely transmission fluid replacements, and addressing minor issues promptly are crucial for longevity. The engine itself is fairly durable, but the transmission is a significant weakness. Rust can also significantly impact long-term durability, shortening the lifespan of the vehicle, especially in areas with harsh winters. Suspension components also tend to wear out over time and will likely require replacement at some point.

I have a 2004 Mitsubishi endeavor LS AWD 3.8L and I picked it up at 1977000 miles on it. It needed a starter and on spark plug. Ever since then. It's been doing good. Never had any complaints. Good on reliability and gas efficiency. Headliner is starting to come down. I'll fix that. I've done brake work new bearing. Getting ready to do front end work. Never been in accident. Have part to go on vehicles. I'll never part with this vehicle and have brand new motor for it. But when I checked what my vehicle is really worth they told me $400. I just put a new windshield in it. I know I can get more for this vehicle when I put out side mirrors on it and do my own paint job. Sincerely Doug eagle eyes

Bought in 2008 by my parents and has now been passed to me a couple years ago. Has 240k miles with the only major issue being that the sun roof doesn't work. The dash and leather seats have never cracked, this is by far my favorite car and I wish they kept making it.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor's built-in tech was fairly basic by today's standards. Standard entertainment features included a CD player and AM/FM radio. Higher trims offered upgraded audio systems, including a CD changer. There were no advanced driver-assistance features available in 2004. Safety features included front airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and traction control. Side airbags were optional on some trims.

Optional features included a sunroof, leather upholstery, and heated front seats. The vehicle lacked modern features like Bluetooth connectivity, navigation systems, or rearview cameras, which are now commonplace. Crash test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) show the 2004 Endeavor generally performed well in frontal crash tests, receiving four or five stars for driver and passenger protection. Side-impact ratings were lower, with three stars for front and rear occupants. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) also conducted tests, with results varying depending on the specific test. Overall, the 2004 Endeavor provided adequate safety for its time but lacks the advanced safety technologies found in newer vehicles. The absence of modern tech and driver-assistance features is a significant drawback compared to contemporary vehicles.

2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor ranged from approximately $25,000 to $32,000, depending on the trim level and options. As a used vehicle in today's market, expect to find them priced between $2,000 and $6,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Endeavor has depreciated significantly due to its age, higher mileage, and the availability of newer, more fuel-efficient, and technologically advanced SUVs. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, rust presence, mechanical soundness, and maintenance history. Low mileage examples in excellent condition command a premium, but even then, values are relatively low.

2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor are generally moderate due to its age. However, fuel economy is relatively poor, making it more costly to fuel than newer SUVs. Maintenance and repair costs can be unpredictable. While some parts are affordable, others may be harder to find or require specialized knowledge. Potential transmission issues and rust repairs contribute to higher long-term ownership costs. Overall, the 2004 Endeavor is not particularly economical to own compared to newer vehicles, primarily due to fuel consumption and potential repair expenses.

2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor Insurance

Insurance for a 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor competed with vehicles like the Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, Nissan Murano, and Ford Explorer. Compared to the Highlander and Pilot, the Endeavor lagged in terms of reliability and resale value. The Murano offered a more stylish design but had its own reliability concerns. The Explorer, while spacious, was less fuel-efficient.

In terms of performance, the Endeavor's V6 engine was adequate but not exceptional. Features were comparable to its rivals in the base trims, but the higher trims of competitors offered more advanced technology. The Endeavor's price was competitive when new, but its depreciation has made it a less attractive option compared to newer, more reliable used SUVs. Alternatives like the Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V, though smaller, offer better fuel economy and reliability. A used Toyota Highlander or Honda Pilot, while potentially more expensive upfront, might prove more reliable and hold their value better in the long run. Therefore, unless you find a very well-maintained Endeavor at a very low price, the Highlander or Pilot are generally better choices for long-term reliability and value.

Final Verdict: Is the 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor a Good Wagon?

The 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a spacious SUV and aren't overly concerned with fuel efficiency or advanced features. It's worth considering *only* if you find one in excellent condition with a documented maintenance history and a very low price. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is crucial, particularly to assess the transmission and check for rust. Avoid examples with obvious transmission problems or excessive rust. Newer, more reliable alternatives are often a better investment in the long run, but if you're willing to accept the potential risks, a well-maintained 2004 Endeavor can provide affordable transportation. Stick to lower trims if possible, as the added features of the Limited trim might introduce more potential problems.

Hands down the best vehicle I have ever owned.

Hands down the best vehicle I have ever owned. Mine is 17 years old, and still runs and performs like a new car. Have never had a serious problem. In fact the biggest problem ever experienced is a dead worn out battery, which has nothing to do with the car. People who see my 2004 Endeavor are astonished to hear that I have owned it since October 2003, thinking that it must be at least 10 years newer than that. I never have kept one car this long, and did not intend to when I purchased it in October 2003 - But I intend to keep it the rest of my life, ans expect that it will outlive me.

One of the best cars I've owned.

I bought this car 2019 out of an urgent need- needed a cheap car after my beloved Honda Odyssey was totaled in an accident. Price wasn't too bad, had almost 154k miles.. but didn't have to do anything so far except regular oil change & buy a couple tires in 1.5yrs. Now it's making loud noises in the tire wells, maybe axles or struts & I need to work on brakes. Other than that it's very very roomy, comfortable & reliable & I love that. Interior design in my mind needs more imagination, weird block center console. Cd player doesn't work but trunk is roomy enough for my decorating business not bad for a 5 seater suv. Love the way it handles, taught 2 kids how to drive with it & trust it to keep them safe on the road. Wish they still made them, I would totally buy another with less mileage rather than a new car.
