The 2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class debuted in 2005, pioneering the "four-door coupe" segment. Its sleek, coupe-like roofline on a sedan body made it instantly recognizable. Key trims included the CLS500 and the CLS55 AMG. Original pricing ranged from approximately $65,000 to $90,000. The CLS-Class stood out for its blend of luxury, performance, and distinctive styling, attracting buyers seeking a unique and head-turning vehicle. It was popular because it offered a sporty aesthetic without sacrificing the practicality of four doors.
The Good

The 2006 CLS-Class offers a compelling blend of performance and luxury. Emotionally, its striking design and powerful engine provide a thrilling driving experience. Practically, it boasts a comfortable ride, a luxurious interior, and a reputation for solid build quality (though reliability can vary). The CLS55 AMG delivers exceptional performance. While not the most fuel-efficient, it offers a decent value proposition on the used market.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2006 CLS-Class include air suspension issues (Airmatic), which can be costly to repair. Electronic glitches, such as problems with the COMAND system or sensors, are also possible. Oil leaks are a common concern, particularly as the car ages. Furthermore, maintenance costs can be high due to the car's complexity and the price of Mercedes-Benz parts. Rust can be an issue in certain climates.

What Problems Does the 2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class revolve around its complex systems. The Airmatic air suspension is a common source of trouble, with components like the air struts and compressor prone to failure, resulting in a costly repair. Electronic gremlins are also frequently cited, affecting systems like the COMAND interface, sensors (e.g., parking sensors, tire pressure monitoring), and power windows. Oil leaks, especially from valve cover gaskets and the rear main seal, are another recurring issue. Specific to the CLS55 AMG, the supercharger can require maintenance over time. Recalls for the 2006 CLS-Class have addressed issues such as fuel filter flange cracking, potential for loss of power steering assist, and problems with the supplemental restraint system (airbags). Long-term reliability hinges on diligent maintenance. Neglecting scheduled servicing can exacerbate existing issues and lead to more significant problems down the line. Pre-purchase inspections by a qualified Mercedes-Benz mechanic are highly recommended to assess the condition of the air suspension, electronics, and potential oil leaks.

How long will the 2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class last?

With proper maintenance, a 2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class can reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report reliable service for 15+ years, given consistent upkeep. However, long-term durability depends heavily on maintenance habits. Neglecting scheduled servicing will shorten the lifespan significantly. Key weaknesses over time include the aforementioned Airmatic suspension issues, which often require replacement of components, and the degradation of rubber components, leading to leaks. Electronic components are also prone to failure as the car ages. Preventative maintenance, such as regular fluid changes and inspections, is crucial for maximizing the car's lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class offered a range of technology and safety features for its time. Standard features included the COMAND system, which integrated audio, navigation, and climate controls. The entertainment system included a CD player and available satellite radio. Driver-assistance features were relatively limited compared to modern vehicles, but included features like cruise control and parking sensors. Safety features consisted of anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESP), traction control, and a comprehensive airbag system, including front, side, and curtain airbags. Optional features included Keyless Go (keyless entry and start), a premium Harman Kardon sound system, and upgraded leather upholstery. The COMAND system, while advanced for its era, now appears dated by modern standards, lacking features like Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Crash test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA were generally good, reflecting Mercedes-Benz's commitment to safety. However, it's important to note that crash test standards have evolved significantly since 2006. The CLS55 AMG also included performance-oriented features like upgraded brakes and suspension. Overall, the 2006 CLS-Class was well-equipped for its time but lacks some of the advanced tech found in newer vehicles.

2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS500 started around $65,000, while the CLS55 AMG commanded a price tag closer to $90,000. Current used market prices range from approximately $5,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The CLS-Class has experienced significant depreciation due to its age, maintenance costs, and the availability of newer, more technologically advanced vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, service history, and mileage. A well-maintained CLS55 AMG will generally command a higher price than a CLS500 in similar condition. Lower mileage and a complete service record are essential for maximizing resale value. The air suspension issues also dramatically impact the car's value if not well maintained or replaced.

2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class Cost of Ownership

The 2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class is generally considered a costly vehicle to own long-term. Insurance premiums are moderate to high, depending on coverage and driving record. Fuel costs can be significant, particularly for the CLS55 AMG, due to its lower fuel economy. Maintenance and repair costs are the most substantial factor, with Mercedes-Benz parts and labor being relatively expensive. The potential for air suspension repairs and electronic glitches further contributes to the overall cost. This car is definitely not an economical choice.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class competed with vehicles like the BMW 6 Series, Audi A6, and Jaguar XF (though the XF arrived a bit later). In terms of performance, the CLS55 AMG was a strong contender, rivaling the BMW 650i in straight-line speed. However, the BMW often provided a sharper, more engaging driving experience. Feature-wise, the CLS-Class offered a comparable level of luxury to its rivals, though its technology now appears dated. Reliability is where the CLS-Class often falls short compared to some competitors, especially the Audi A6, which has a better reputation for dependability. In terms of price on the used market, the CLS-Class is generally similar to its rivals. Alternatives to consider include the BMW 6 Series, which offers a sportier driving experience; the Audi A6, known for its reliability; or a newer Lexus GS, which provides a blend of luxury and dependability. For those prioritizing performance above all else at this price point, a used BMW M5 of a similar vintage might also be worth considering, despite its own potential maintenance challenges. If reliability is a major concern, a Lexus is a better choice.

Final Verdict: Is the 2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class a Good Sedan?

The 2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class is ideal for buyers who appreciate its unique styling and are willing to accept the potential for higher maintenance costs. It's worth buying used if you find a well-maintained example with a comprehensive service history, and ideally one where the Airmatic suspension has been addressed. The CLS55 AMG offers exhilarating performance but requires even greater diligence in maintenance. This car is *not* recommended for budget-conscious buyers or those seeking trouble-free ownership. A pre-purchase inspection is crucial. If you're drawn to its design and don't mind the potential for repairs, the CLS-Class can still provide a luxurious and enjoyable driving experience. Consider a later model year if your budget allows, as they may have addressed some of the earlier issues.

Very lovely vehicle. And only 5650 been made.

I have 2005 cls55 amg and its a very beautifulcar handles like a racing car,you can feel the car completelyin your control, very fast goes up to 200km in 3rd gear in 10seconds,and the sound is just mad, once you drive the cls55 you get addicted and can not stop driving it everyday, you have to discipline your self very carefully, because of the performance you can easily hurt yr self unless you are very experienced driver. When you sit in it and hold6thr steering wheel You are in a different time zone, and when you put yr belts on and turn the key on you get so excited, all you have to do is just turn the key on and let it go,you dont hold the key to started. And that cold start sound is just madness, and you cant stop yr self driving it, just b4 i drive in to my drive way,i change my mind and drive through and have another5 min drive around the streets,on an open road if you kick it down all the way ,you cant keep holding the pedal down for long, because the monster engine just wont stay still,it just goes up to 200 km in 8 seconds last time i recorded, then i take my foot of the pedal becauseits just roaring like a mad, i have driven many nice cars, but this cls55 is an addiction!! Middle of the night you just want to take it out for a ride. You have to drive cls55 to understan what i mean. I also have 2007 cls63 amg and its just a madness, very beautiful very very fast like the cls55 amg ,but handling is just not the same,cls63 amg is a very very comfortable to drive and seats has more padding in it for yr comfort, and suspensions are more comfort, but handling is not the same as cls55 amg, cls55 amg is come a be part of yr body and mind when you sit and start driving it. I also have the 2008 cls350 with only a 36.000km on it very smooth very comfortable keyless entry car,but nothing like cls55 amg,

Epic luxury and comfort.

Best car I have ever owned. This is a must if you desire looks, comfort and safety. The design and functionality is timeless. With a vehicle weight of almost 4000 lbs the 2006 CLS 500 owns the road.

cls 55 amg

This car has been an absolute blast to own; it is extremely fast and comfortable; it has an ability to eat up mileage like no other car I have owned. The predominant characteristic of this vehicle is the engine; it is a handmade supercharged v8 that produces a massive amount of torque throughout the rev range, it feels as accelerative at 70 mph as it does at 20. The benefit of the 55 (5.4L Supercharged) series AMG vehicles over the later 63 (6.2L NA) is the torque and cost of ownership, the engine (M113K) and transmission in this vehicle are known to be extremely reliable and have been used in many different model (S55, SL55, E55, CLS55, ...) over the years with very few issues, it is also relatively inexpensive to modify.

Veey unreliable, the.auto gear box, a.joke

Looks great, comfortable, but. As with all Mercedes Cars, the auto gear box is troublesome, and unreliable, no matter how much money you spend.on it. I've had several Mercs, and the gearboxes ALWAYS gave huge trouble.

Most reliable car

This car meets all the requirements that I have for a car. Mercedes Benz went hard in 2006. This car is quiet and sensitive but if you press the S and put it in manual this car flys like a bat out of hell. And it’s luxurious also.
