What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Crash test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) were generally favorable for the S40, reflecting Volvo's commitment to safety. These ratings should be researched on the IIHS and NHTSA websites for precise scores. The S40 was designed with features like crumple zones to absorb impact energy and protect occupants. While it lacks modern features like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking, its focus on structural integrity and basic safety features were ahead of many competitors at the time.

How Does the 2001 Volvo S40 Compare to Other Sedan?
Alternatives to consider include the Acura Integra (if sporty handling is a priority), the Volkswagen Jetta (for more space and available features), or a Honda Civic (for reliability and affordability). The Saab 9-3 offers similar Scandinavian design, but may have comparable maintenance concerns. The Mazda Protege offers excellent handling and reliability at a budget price. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual priorities and budget. If safety and a comfortable ride are paramount, the S40 is worth considering, but be prepared for potential maintenance costs.

A very good carthe VOLVO S40 is a great car. I had one, a 1996 model which I drove for 25 years. I sold it last year and the new owner is enthusiastic about his purchase. Jean-Claude Kaell

Even for a 2001, it works perfectly. This car is old, yes, but as my first car it has proven to be extremely reliable. It still works to this day, and drives beautifully. It has a lot of features for a 2001, and has not had many repairs.

Most reliable car I have owed in my lifetime! This car I purchase from the Volvo dealership with one hundred and twenty six thousand miles in 2013 with only having one owner an older couple. I purchase this for a solely to use for a company car as I am a social worker that drive a thousand miles every two weeks, this has been far one of the best cars I have ever owed in my lifetime! I just reached two hundred thousand miles on the car hope I get another two hundred!

Great Highway CarOur family purchased a certified pre-owned S40 that was 3 years old and drove it daily. It is not the fastest car out of the stop light, but at highway speeds this automatic-transmission car is smooth as silk. Also, it handles beautifully as a typical European car should. Volvo has great attention to instrumentation and little details inside, plus it is as solid a car as they come. Best MPG attained -- 27. We highly recommend the S40 if you can find a low-mileage, used one.
