The 2016 BMW X4 is a compact luxury crossover with a coupe-like roofline, often called a "sports activity coupe" by BMW. It's part of the first X4 generation (2015-2018). Key trims include the xDrive28i and xDrive35i. New, it ranged approximately from $45,000 to $50,000+. Its distinctive styling and blend of SUV practicality with sporty handling made it popular with buyers seeking a unique and head-turning vehicle.
The Good

The 2016 BMW X4 offers strong performance, especially in the xDrive35i trim. Its striking design appeals emotionally, while the comfortable interior and available all-wheel drive provide practical benefits. Reliability is generally good with proper maintenance. While not the most efficient, its fuel economy is reasonable for its class. It provides reasonable value, blending luxury and sporty character.

The Bad

Weaknesses of the 2016 BMW X4 include its compromised rear headroom and cargo space due to the sloping roofline. The ride can be firm, especially with larger wheels. Repair costs for BMWs can be high. Potential buyers should watch out for oil leaks, electronic glitches, and ensure regular maintenance has been performed to avoid future problems.

What Problems Does the 2016 BMW X4 Have?

The 2016 BMW X4 can experience several frequently reported problems. Oil leaks, particularly from the valve cover gasket and oil filter housing, are common. Electronic issues, such as glitches with the iDrive system or malfunctioning sensors, have also been noted. Some owners have reported problems with the cooling system, including water pump failures. While not exclusive to the 2016 model, BMW's in general can suffer from issues with the timing chain, especially if oil changes are neglected.
Recalls for the 2016 X4 were issued for various reasons, including potential issues with the fuel pump and airbags, which could increase the risk of a crash. It is important to check the VIN on the NHTSA website to verify if a specific vehicle has any outstanding recalls.
Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the complexity of the vehicle's systems. The turbocharged engines require diligent maintenance, including frequent oil changes, to prevent premature wear. Suspension components, particularly the adaptive dampers if equipped, can also require replacement over time. Proper maintenance records are crucial when considering a used 2016 X4, as neglected maintenance can lead to costly repairs down the road.

How long will the 2016 BMW X4 last?

With good maintenance, a 2016 BMW X4 can realistically reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Years of service would depend heavily on annual mileage. Good maintenance habits include timely oil changes, fluid checks, and addressing minor issues promptly.
Long-term durability weaknesses often relate to the car's electronic systems and the wear of suspension components. Turbocharger longevity depends heavily on oil change frequency and driving habits. Regular inspection and preventive maintenance are key to maximizing the vehicle's lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 BMW X4 comes with a solid suite of built-in tech and safety features. The standard iDrive infotainment system includes a 6.5-inch display, Bluetooth connectivity, and a USB port. Optional upgrades include a larger display, navigation, BMW Online services, and a Harman Kardon sound system.
Driver-assistance features include a standard rearview camera and optional features like lane departure warning, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, and adaptive cruise control. These technologies enhance safety and convenience.
Safety features encompass standard airbags, stability control, and anti-lock brakes.
Crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA should be checked for the specific model year, though typically, BMWs perform well in these tests. The available driver-assistance packages further enhance safety by providing alerts and interventions to help prevent accidents. The head-up display (optional) projects important information onto the windshield, allowing the driver to keep their eyes on the road. Overall, the 2016 X4 offers a competitive array of technology and safety features for its class.

2016 BMW X4 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2016 BMW X4 ranged from approximately $45,000 to over $50,000 depending on the trim and options. As of today, used market prices can vary widely depending on condition, mileage, and location, but typically range from $18,000 to $28,000.
The X4 has depreciated significantly, as is typical for luxury vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, maintenance history, mileage, and the presence of desirable options. Models with lower mileage, clean titles, and complete service records command higher prices. The xDrive35i may hold its value slightly better due to its more powerful engine.

2016 BMW X4 Cost of Ownership

The 2016 BMW X4 is generally considered costly to own. Insurance premiums are higher than average due to its luxury status and performance capabilities. Fuel costs are moderate, but premium fuel is recommended. Maintenance and repairs can be expensive, particularly for specialized parts and labor. Regular maintenance is crucial to avoid costly breakdowns. Long-term ownership costs can be significant due to potential repairs associated with German luxury vehicles.

2016 BMW X4 Insurance

Insurance for a 2016 BMW X4 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Minivan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 BMW X4 Compare to Other Minivan?

The 2016 BMW X4 competes with vehicles like the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe, Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, and Porsche Macan. The X4 excels in performance, especially in the xDrive35i trim, offering a more engaging driving experience than the GLC Coupe. However, the GLC Coupe generally offers a more comfortable ride and a slightly more luxurious interior. The Evoque boasts a distinctive design and off-road capability but lags behind in performance and technology. The Macan offers superior performance and handling but comes at a higher price point and can be less practical.
In terms of reliability, the X4 is generally comparable to its rivals, though German luxury vehicles typically have higher maintenance costs than Japanese alternatives. Feature-wise, the X4 offers a competitive suite of technology and driver-assistance features.
Alternatives to consider would be the Acura RDX or Lexus NX for better reliability and lower ownership costs, though they lack the X4's sporty character. If performance is a top priority and budget isn't a major concern, the Porsche Macan is a better choice. If comfort and luxury are paramount, the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe is a strong contender.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 BMW X4 a Good Minivan?

The 2016 BMW X4 is ideal for individuals who prioritize a sporty driving experience and distinctive styling in a compact crossover. It's a good fit for those who don't require maximum rear passenger space or cargo capacity. Whether it's worth buying depends on individual priorities and budget. A used 2016 X4 can be a good value, especially if well-maintained.
However, potential buyers should be prepared for higher ownership costs and potential repairs. The xDrive35i offers superior performance, but the xDrive28i is a more economical choice. Thoroughly inspect any used X4 and obtain a pre-purchase inspection from a qualified mechanic before making a decision.

The car has tons of cool stuff

It is a great car but has one major flaw. The rearview mirror doesn't move up or down to accommodate a taller or shorter driver. It creates a huge blind spot for taller drivers.

Worth it, plain and simple

I recently picked up my 2016 x4 xdrive28i and it's a perfect match for me. Alpine white with mocha brown interior with orange stitching. Premium package, cold weather package, comfort package, x line package, and the best looking set of 19" rims and run flats I've seen. Now it's built on the x3 platform, but it feels more like a cross between an x3 and a 5 series. Nice and roomy. The 4 driving modes-comfort, eco pro, sport and sport+ are all awesome. What's really cool is the eco pro mode in the navigation. Paddle shifting is fun, and while mine didn't come with heads up display, seeing directions in the middle of the gauges is just as good. Having upgraded from a 2014 x1, I was initially concerned about storage space as it's slightly less, but it's plenty functional. 2 sets of golf clubs fit in there easily without having to lay the back seats down. Good gas mileage was a must as I commute 50 miles 1 way, no complaints there. The high ground clearance is nice as well. Very comfortable for long rides.

Most fun car to drive ever

The X4 handles beautifully - like a sports car only higher off the ground. Interior design is very well done. My camel leather seats look fantastic. Overall quality is excellent as well.

Great SUV, Excellent Driving Dynamics

This is a great sport SUV, it drives like a BMW car with great stability and control, completely different than other SUV's. The interior looks high level with very comfortable sport seats which look like new after more than 30K miles. Reliability is excellent, no issues whatsoever.

2016 X4

I just purchased this 3 days ago and I absolutely love it! It drives awesome and I love how sporty it looks while being AWD. Most AWD small SUV Γ’β‚¬Λœs look like a box and I hate that look, so I was instantly in love with this car when it came out! I’m so glad I found one for such an affordable price and low miles!

Sporty with a super luxurious ride.

So far I love this car. This is the second bmw I have owned and I didn’t think it could get better than my 4series gran coupe but I found my new love in the x4.

Love the car

The car is so fun to drive. I have the bigger engine with the M sport package and this car really does move. I know a lot of people don’t like the styling and prefer the X.3 but I love it. This car has really maintained its value as well

Wanted a change

I exchanged my X5 for this X4. While the performance is good, runs smooth. The height can be a bit higher for better view. My X5 had more engine power due to 3.0 litre V6 engine that I miss in X4 otherwise this is a fun car to drive. Loaded features is a big plus
