The 2018 BMW X4 is a compact luxury crossover with a coupe-like roofline, blending practicality with sporty styling. It's part of the X4's first generation, which spans from 2014 to 2018. Key trims include the xDrive28i and the performance-oriented M40i. New pricing ranged from around $48,000 to $60,000. Its distinctive silhouette and BMW's driving dynamics make it a popular choice for those seeking a stylish and engaging SUV.
The Good

The 2018 BMW X4 offers a compelling blend of performance and style. Its powerful engine options deliver exhilarating acceleration, appealing to emotional buyers. Practically, it provides a comfortable ride, luxurious interior, and decent fuel efficiency for its class. While not the most reliable, it strikes a balance between desirability and everyday usability. Its coupe-like design sets it apart from more conventional SUVs.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2018 BMW X4 include its compromised rear headroom and cargo space due to the sloping roofline. Reliability can be a concern, with some owners reporting issues with the electronics and drivetrain. The run-flat tires can provide a harsh ride and are expensive to replace. Be aware of potential repair costs, as BMW parts and labor can be pricey.

What Problems Does the 2018 BMW X4 Have?

The 2018 BMW X4, while generally well-regarded, has experienced some frequently reported problems. Issues with the electrical system, including malfunctioning sensors and glitches with the iDrive system, are sometimes reported. Some owners have noted oil leaks, particularly in higher-mileage examples.
Drivetrain issues, such as problems with the transfer case and transmission, have also been documented, though less frequently. Some owners have also experienced issues with the cooling system, leading to potential overheating.
While recalls specific to the 2018 X4 may be limited, it's important to check the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website for any active recalls related to safety or performance. Long-term reliability can be a concern, especially as the vehicle ages, with the potential for increased maintenance and repair costs. Preventative maintenance, such as regular oil changes and fluid checks, is crucial to mitigating potential issues. Before purchasing a used 2018 X4, a thorough inspection by a qualified mechanic is recommended to identify any existing or potential problems.

How long will the 2018 BMW X4 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2018 BMW X4 can realistically provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-13 years of service. However, achieving this lifespan depends heavily on consistent maintenance and responsible driving habits. Long-term durability can be affected by the complex electronics and potential for oil leaks as the engine ages. The suspension components and bushings may also require attention over time. Regular servicing, using quality parts, and addressing issues promptly are essential to maximizing the vehicle's lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2018 BMW X4 boasts a range of technology, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. Standard tech includes the iDrive infotainment system with a 6.5-inch display (upgradable to a larger touchscreen), Bluetooth connectivity, and a rearview camera. Entertainment options include a premium Harman Kardon sound system.
Driver-assistance features include standard parking sensors and optional features like adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring. The optional Technology Package adds features like a head-up display and active driving assistant.
Safety features include multiple airbags, stability control, and anti-lock brakes. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) provide crash-test ratings. While specific ratings for the 2018 X4 may vary, BMWs generally perform well in safety tests. It's recommended to check both IIHS and NHTSA websites for the most accurate and up-to-date crash-test information.

How Does the 2018 BMW X4 Compare to Other Coupe?

The 2018 BMW X4 competes with vehicles like the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe, Audi Q5, and Porsche Macan. In terms of performance, the X4 M40i is a strong contender, rivaling the Macan S. Features are comparable across the class, with similar tech and luxury options available. Reliability is where the X4 can fall short compared to some rivals like the Audi Q5, which generally receives higher reliability ratings. Price-wise, the X4 is competitive but can become expensive with options.
The Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe offers a more refined interior and similar styling, while the Porsche Macan provides superior handling and driving dynamics. The Audi Q5 offers a more practical and reliable option. Depending on priorities, the Porsche Macan (for performance) or Audi Q5 (for reliability and practicality) could be considered better alternatives. If styling is paramount and performance is important, the X4 remains a compelling choice, although buyers should be aware of the potential reliability concerns.

Final Verdict: Is the 2018 BMW X4 a Good Coupe?

The 2018 BMW X4 is ideal for buyers who prioritize sporty styling and BMW's driving dynamics over ultimate practicality. It's worth buying if you appreciate the coupe-like SUV design and are willing to accept some compromises in rear headroom and cargo space.
A used X4 can be a good value, especially if a thorough pre-purchase inspection is performed to address any potential reliability issues. The M40i trim offers a significant performance upgrade and can be worth the extra cost for driving enthusiasts. Buyers should factor in potentially higher maintenance and repair costs compared to some rivals.

Great Looking

Would love to own it. A bit out of my price range however. This vehicle would replace my Lexus RX350 which I have owned for 3 years.

Fun funky raised wagon thing 🙂

I'm a old school BMW guy, coming from a 2003 manual e46 330i ZHP. It's 15 years old and its time for a newer car. These days its really hard to find a real drivers car. So originally I test drove a bunch of sporty cars like the Golf Rs and GLA45 AMGs. They drove very nice once you are going very fast on the freeways, but around town or commuting in stop and go traffic which I will be doing 99% of the time, they were horrible. The combination of turbo lag and automatic dual clutch lag (the time you hit the go pedal to the time it actually moves) was horrible (remember I am coming from a manual). Sure they have launch control, but knowing me the tires would be gone by the time I made it to work! So I started thinking, maybe a SUV would make more sense than a hot hatch. So I looked at Cayennes, Land Rover Sports, etc. But then the gas price was going up and 14 mpg was not sounding to good. So now the compromise, a small crossover! My wife already drives a big crossover so we don not need another big vehicle. I never thought in my life I would own a crossover, it's not that I don't like them. I just thought a car guy that had to drive something looks manly, you know something very high and tough or very low and fast looking (I use the word looking because 99% of us just drive a car for looks)! LOL... anyways after test driving a few horrible (some had hidden body work, suspension damage, trunk full of dog hair, etc) certified and not certified crossovers. I was tired after looking at over a dozen cars, so when I saw this certified lease returned X4, I was like WOW... it was light (maybe the steering is too light) and the lag taking off was minimal. Plus I could brake torque it (where you hold the brakes and apply the gas so that the car takes off quicker when you let up on the brake)! The X4 has great stability in fast turns (49/51% weight balance) especially with the M-sport package and staggered 20" P-Zero tires (rear are 275 wide)! For a vehicle that weighs about 4200 lbs. It gets good fuel mileage (almost 30 highway mpg). The crash ratings were very good. Yes the trunk and rear seats are smaller than the X3, but I drive alone 99% of the time. Sure the Macan S is faster and better on a track but I can't afford one of those. So if you do not need a large trunk to carry a refrigerator, drive on a race track often or go through 3 feet of mud everyday, go test drive the X4!

Favorite Car I've Ever Owned

I have the X4 M40i. It is one fast car and yes, she purrs. I am very comfortable in it and although I have heard the back seats were short...not for the average person. It is very comfortable and I love it.

The BMW X4 is such a great car!

This is my first BMW and I love it! The style of the X4 is great for people who want a small SUV but like a sports car. This combines both. The ride is smooth and the handling is refined. Having wireless Apple CarPlay on the 2018 model is a great feature. I was used to blind spot detectors giving an audible notification, but the X4 uses vibrations in the steering wheel along with the lights on the sideview mirror. At first this takes some getting used to, but that does alert you to the car in the next lane.
