The 2008 Chrysler Aspen was a full-size SUV based on the Dodge Durango platform. Produced from 2007 to 2009, it aimed to offer a luxurious and capable alternative in the SUV market. Key trims included the base model and the Limited. New, the Aspen ranged from approximately $31,000 to $38,000. Its appeal stemmed from its truck-like capabilities combined with Chrysler's attempt at upscale styling and features.
The Good

The 2008 Chrysler Aspen offered a powerful V8 engine option, appealing to those needing towing capacity and confident performance. Its spacious interior provided comfort for families. The design, while not universally loved, provided a bold statement. Practically, it offered a lower price point compared to some luxury SUVs. Emotionally, it delivered the feel of a substantial, capable vehicle.

The Bad

The 2008 Chrysler Aspen is known for subpar fuel economy, a common issue with large SUVs. Reliability can be a concern, with reports of electrical issues and drivetrain problems. The interior materials and fit and finish were often criticized. Potential buyers should thoroughly inspect the vehicle's history and condition.

What Problems Does the 2008 Chrysler Aspen Have?

The 2008 Chrysler Aspen faced several reported issues. Common problems included electrical malfunctions, such as issues with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM), which could lead to starting problems and other electrical gremlins. Drivetrain issues, including transmission problems and differential failures, were also reported. Some owners experienced issues with the air conditioning system, including compressor failures.
Recalls affected the Aspen, including recalls for potential issues with the fuel system and airbag deployment. Long-term reliability concerns centered around the vehicle's susceptibility to rust, particularly in areas with harsh winters. The 2007 model year, being the first year of production, often had more reported issues than the 2008 and 2009 models, though the 2008 still suffered from similar problems. Overall, prospective buyers should thoroughly inspect the vehicle and check its maintenance history due to these reliability concerns.

How long will the 2008 Chrysler Aspen last?

Given its age, a 2008 Chrysler Aspen could have accumulated well over 200,000 miles. Average mileage depends heavily on maintenance and usage. With diligent maintenance, including regular oil changes and fluid checks, an Aspen could potentially last beyond 250,000 miles or 15+ years. However, weaknesses include rust, electrical issues, and potential drivetrain problems. Neglecting maintenance can significantly shorten its lifespan. Regular inspection of suspension components and the undercarriage is crucial for long-term durability.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2008 Chrysler Aspen offered a mix of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features included a basic audio system with a CD player and auxiliary input. Available tech included a navigation system (optional), a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, and satellite radio. Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles, but included features like antilock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control, and tire pressure monitoring.
Safety features included front and side airbags, and side curtain airbags for all three rows. Available safety options included park assist and a rearview camera. Crash test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) varied. Some ratings were four stars for frontal and side impacts, while rollover ratings were generally lower. Always verify specific ratings for the model year and configuration. Its tech was adequate for the time but now feels dated compared to newer vehicles. The safety features were standard for the era, but modern SUVs offer more advanced driver-assistance technologies.

2008 Chrysler Aspen Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2008 Chrysler Aspen ranged from approximately $31,000 to $38,000 depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices typically range from $3,000 to $8,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Aspen experienced significant depreciation due to factors such as its reliability concerns, fuel economy, and the relatively short production run. Resale value is largely affected by the vehicle's condition, maintenance history, and the presence of desirable options like the HEMI engine and DVD entertainment system. Low mileage and a well-documented maintenance history can increase resale value, but it remains relatively low compared to other SUVs.

2008 Chrysler Aspen Cost of Ownership

The 2008 Chrysler Aspen is generally considered costly to own. Insurance premiums are moderate but fuel costs are high due to its poor fuel economy. Maintenance can be expensive, particularly if repairs are needed for common issues like electrical problems or drivetrain components. Long-term ownership costs can be substantial, considering potential repairs and the need for regular maintenance to mitigate reliability concerns. It's not an economical choice compared to more fuel-efficient or reliable SUVs. Budget accordingly for potential repairs and higher fuel consumption.

How Does the 2008 Chrysler Aspen Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2008 Chrysler Aspen competed with SUVs like the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition, and Toyota 4Runner. In terms of performance, the Aspen offered comparable power, especially with the HEMI engine. However, its fuel economy was generally worse than its rivals. Feature-wise, it was relatively competitive, offering similar amenities. However, its reliability lagged behind the Tahoe, Expedition, and especially the 4Runner, known for their robust dependability. Price-wise, the Aspen was often less expensive than some competitors, especially on the used market.
Alternatives to the 2008 Chrysler Aspen include the Chevrolet Tahoe, which offers better reliability and a wider range of aftermarket support. The Toyota 4Runner is an excellent choice for long-term dependability, although it might be more expensive. The Ford Expedition provides comparable interior space and towing capacity. Overall, while the Aspen offers a lower price point, its reliability issues make it a less attractive option compared to these alternatives, unless budget is the absolute primary concern.

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Chrysler Aspen a Good Wagon?

The 2008 Chrysler Aspen is ideally suited for buyers prioritizing affordability and towing capacity over long-term reliability and fuel efficiency. It might be worth buying used if the price is significantly lower than comparable SUVs and if a thorough pre-purchase inspection reveals no major issues. Opting for the Limited trim with the 5.7L HEMI engine offers the best performance and features, but be prepared for higher fuel costs. Due to potential reliability concerns, it's not recommended for those seeking a hassle-free ownership experience. It is best for buyers who are mechanically inclined and willing to perform some maintenance themselves or have a trusted mechanic.

Best $5000 ever spent.

Best $5000 ever spent. I purchased my 2008 Chrysler Aspen Limited with the 5.7 Hemi back in summer of 2022 with 204,000 miles on it. I got it to tow my 34' Travel Trailer that is about 8200 lbs fully loaded. I love the 8 passenger seating and the power of the 5.7 Hemi. Being able to use one vehicle to transport the grandkids and pull the trailer at once is awesome. I now have 256,000 miles on it (about 4K towing) and it still runs strong, and has been the most dependable vehicle I have owned thus far. I have had to replace all ball joints, shocks, tie-rods, spark-plugs, muffler/resonator, brake pads/rotors, serpentine belt and tensioner but that is to expected with this many miles. Gas mileage averages 15 to 16 mpg normal driving and 8 to 10 mpg towing my trailer and it consumes about 1 quart of oil between changes. I'm tempted to spend the money to repair the rust at the bottom of the doors and see if I can reach 350K!

Most reliable car/SUV I have ever owned.

Has been a darling over the years. Still turn heads and have people ask me who makes the vehicle. Impressed with gas mileage & performance on the highway. Heated leather seats; navigation; Bluetooth; rear camera.

Hardly known, way under appreciated vehicle

When you get one of these with a 5.7 hemi, and the AWD system, you have quite a vehicle! These drivetrains are so reliable, powerful, and the AWD system has locking ability front and rear, better than most Jeeps, and way better than most trucks. Towing capacity is huge too.

Built like Tank and the best car/SUV I ever drove

This was the safest feeling SUV I ever driven. HEMi is super strong and great to drive in snow. I’ve come to find that I spend the exact same on gas in my v6 Jeep Grand Cherokee As I do in this HEMi V8.... In hindsite I should of kept the Aspen
