Rating: 4.37

Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2000 Dodge Intrepid is a full-size sedan known for its cab-forward design, maximizing interior space. Part of the second generation (1998-2004), it was available in base, SE, and ES trims. Its sleek styling and relatively affordable price made it popular. New, it ranged approximately from $19,000 to $24,000. It stood out for its spaciousness and comfortable ride, making it a popular choice for families.
The Good

The 2000 Dodge Intrepid offered a comfortable ride and spacious interior, appealing to practical buyers needing a family sedan. Performance was adequate, and the cab-forward design provided a sporty feel (emotional appeal). It offered good value for the price, but reliability was a common concern. Fuel efficiency was reasonable for its size.

The Bad

The 2000 Dodge Intrepid is known for its potential reliability issues. Common problems include transmission failures, electrical problems, and water leaks. Watch out for overheating due to cooling system issues. Regular maintenance is crucial to mitigate these risks. Rust, especially in colder climates, can also be a concern.

What Problems Does the 2000 Dodge Intrepid Have?

The 2000 Dodge Intrepid has several frequently reported problems and long-term reliability concerns. One of the most common and expensive issues is transmission failure, particularly with the 4-speed automatic transmission. Many owners reported premature transmission wear and eventual failure, often requiring costly repairs or replacement.
Another prevalent issue involves the cooling system. Overheating is a recurring problem, often attributed to coolant leaks, radiator failures, and water pump issues. Neglecting cooling system maintenance can lead to significant engine damage.
Electrical problems are also frequently reported, ranging from malfunctioning sensors and faulty wiring to issues with the power windows, door locks, and the car's computer system. These electrical gremlins can be difficult and expensive to diagnose and repair.
Water leaks are another concern, often occurring around the windshield and sunroof (if equipped), leading to potential mold and mildew growth inside the vehicle. Rust is also a long-term concern, especially in regions with harsh winter weather and road salt. Check rocker panels, wheel wells, and undercarriage.
While specific recalls for the 2000 model year would need to be verified with the NHTSA database, general recalls related to airbags, electrical systems, or fuel systems might have applied. It's essential to check the vehicle's VIN against recall databases before purchasing. Early 2nd generation models (1998-2000) are generally considered to have more reliability concerns than later years.

How long will the 2000 Dodge Intrepid last?

With proper maintenance, a 2000 Dodge Intrepid could potentially reach 200,000 miles or more. However, due to the aforementioned reliability issues, many succumbed to major failures (especially transmission) well before that mark. Average lifespan likely falls between 150,000 and 180,000 miles, or approximately 15-20 years of service, *if* well-maintained. Long-term durability is hindered by the known transmission, cooling system, and electrical weaknesses. Neglecting regular maintenance will significantly shorten its lifespan. Rust will also become a major factor in colder climates over time.

This was hands down the best car I've ever owned. The keyless entry and remote start is awesome. Smooth ride, roomy, comfortable, very reliable. Love the dash, and the sound system, excellent. Traveling shot distances or long, I've never worried driving my family anywhere, the safety features in this car are top notch.

I have been driving my Intrepid R/T for 6 years now. It is a great car, fast, reliable and causes heads to turn. I'll drive it forever. Just love it.
k_ryder04
This is the best car I have ever owned. I have had it for 10 years and it now has 148,000 miles on it and it runs like it did the day I got it. It has a sports car appearance and feel, but is perfect for the family. I live in northern Wisconsin where there is a lot of snow and I have no problems in the winter, just have to make sure I have good tires. I have the 3.2 engine and am I glad I do. Great exceleration, and still get 25-30mpg. Before purchasing anything else, compare all the details and look at reviews: by owners and experts.
Negative Owner Reviews
Intrepid Owner
this car runs and performs good untill you hit around 100,000 miles then everything jst seems to start messing up. from the engine knocking to the transmission hard shifting to the turn signals failing to work.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2000 Dodge Intrepid featured relatively basic tech and safety features for its time. The standard entertainment system included an AM/FM radio with a cassette player, and a CD player was available as an option. Higher trims like the ES offered upgraded audio systems.
Driver-assistance features were limited. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) were available, but traction control was not a common option. Cruise control was often included in the SE and ES trims.
Safety features included dual front airbags. Side airbags were not available. Daytime running lights were also included.
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) should be consulted for specific scores. Generally, the Intrepid performed adequately in frontal crash tests for its class, but side-impact protection was lacking compared to modern vehicles. Keep in mind that safety standards have significantly improved since 2000. The absence of modern driver-assistance systems like lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking significantly reduces its safety compared to newer vehicles. It also lacked stability control which is a safety feature that prevents skidding. Airbags were also less sophisticated than modern airbags.

2000 Dodge Intrepid Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2000 Dodge Intrepid ranged from approximately $19,000 to $24,000, depending on the trim level and options. Given its age, current used market prices are very low, typically ranging from a few hundred to a couple of thousand dollars, if running. Depreciation has been substantial due to its age, reliability concerns, and the availability of newer, more fuel-efficient and technologically advanced vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, mileage, maintenance records, and whether any major repairs (like transmission replacement) have been performed. High mileage and a lack of maintenance history will significantly lower the price.

2000 Dodge Intrepid Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2000 Dodge Intrepid are likely to be relatively low due to its age and depreciated value. Fuel costs are moderate, given its V6 engine options. However, maintenance and repair costs can be high due to the car's age and potential reliability issues. Unexpected repairs, particularly to the transmission or cooling system, can quickly make it a costly vehicle to own long-term. Overall, it's not an economical choice due to potential repair bills, outweighing the low purchase price.

2000 Dodge Intrepid Insurance

Insurance for a 2000 Dodge Intrepid is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2000 Dodge Intrepid Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2000 Dodge Intrepid competed with other full-size sedans like the Ford Taurus, Chevrolet Impala, Toyota Avalon, and Honda Accord. In terms of performance, the Intrepid's V6 engines were adequate, but not class-leading. Features were comparable to the Taurus and Impala, but lagged behind the Avalon and Accord. Reliability was a significant weakness compared to the Toyota and Honda, and arguably even the Ford and Chevy.
In terms of price, the Intrepid was often more affordable than the Avalon and Accord, making it appealing to budget-conscious buyers. However, the lower price came at the cost of increased risk of repairs.
Alternatives worth considering include the Toyota Avalon and Honda Accord for their superior reliability, although they will typically cost more. The Ford Taurus and Chevrolet Impala offer a similar level of features and space, and are often more reliable than the Intrepid, albeit with their own sets of potential problems. If reliability is a primary concern, the Japanese alternatives are the clear winners. If budget is the only concern, the Intrepid might be acceptable *if* a thorough pre-purchase inspection is performed and any potential issues are addressed proactively. A well-maintained Buick LeSabre would also be a viable and often more reliable alternative within a similar price range.

Final Verdict: Is the 2000 Dodge Intrepid a Good Sedan?

The 2000 Dodge Intrepid is ideal for someone on a very tight budget who needs a large sedan and is willing to take a gamble on reliability. It is generally not worth buying unless the purchase price is extremely low and you are prepared for potential repairs. It's only worth considering if you can perform most of the maintenance and repairs yourself or have access to very affordable labor. Focus on finding an ES model with a well-documented maintenance history. Avoid if you need a dependable daily driver or cannot afford unexpected repair bills. Newer, more reliable alternatives are strongly recommended, even if they cost more upfront, as they will likely save money in the long run.

Great value

I bought this car for my girlfriend. She loves her car. The only complaint is the heater doesn't work, but the AC works great. Between the mileage and the price, I don't think we could've gotten a better deal on anything else

Solid and Safe Car

Drove this car for 90,000 miles. I got it at 114,000 and now at 204,000 I am replacing it due to front suspension issues. It was a solid car, lots of power (great acceleration onto highway), and could fit a surprising amount of gear. Repairs were few and not too expensive.

Dodge R/T

Let me state first that the bad reviews are the well know 2.7L which have oil sludge issues. The engine was too small for the big car and too many were rental cars, Now on the other hand the ES 3.2 and the best 3.5L HO R/T are amazing cars for amazing values. I bought my 2000 R/T with 160K miles and love it for my commuter car. Fast enough, dependable (research the 3.5 HO engine) best engine made, great looks, and awesome handling and breaking. The R/T has major upgrades in its suspension and brakes vs ES and SE models. The slap stick is fun and shifts great. Im not just saying this but the R/T model has awesome sports car handling combined with a very comfortable interior and a huge interior and trunk. I don't need heated seats and leather its a very very enjoyable car to drive and a great value. Just stay away from the 2.7L engine. Its a shame these engines were even in the model otherwise I see this car as 1 of the best Dodges ever made, FYI- The 2000-2002 R/T models are hands down the best and are very rare if you can find one trust me buy it, you will not be disappointed!!

Good Car But Has It's Problems

This was my first car, and drove pretty good for a first time driver, but it felt like I was driving a tank. I didn't like how I could feel the road beneath me. It drove kind of shakey, compared to other cars as well. It had a good interior, even though it seemed cramped there is a lot of room, a good sized trunk too! I didn't like how the tires are near impossible to find. And the car was constantly having to get the main computer looked at. From what I have seen, and heard from other Intrepid Users, this car is notorious for loosing battery quick and dying easily. Great car for first time driver, or someone who wants to put a lot of time into it.

great car, treated me well

I bought my 2000 Dodge Intrepid w/ the 3.2L engine and the clutchless shifting 4 speed trans brand new in May of 2000 and it is now May of 2012 and its still going strong. 195k miles. the only issues i have had were, besides routine stuff like timimng belt/water pump and suspension work (after 8 years, i think i have replaced the entire suspension all around), i had problems with the radiator/thermostat and had replace it 3 times, though at least one of those was a defective install/part. other than that i have done all the recommended routine maintenance. but alas, it is prob going to die in the next year or so. Dodges are not exactly the best built, and my mechanic marvels at my intredpids longevity. the interior isnt bad, not glamourous, but it is huge. the car is huge. great trunk, great back seat, lots of leg room all around, the engine is quick enough at 225hp to get onto the highway in a hurry and it cruises like a dream.

Good Solid Car

Been driving an ES for over 11 years. No major problems. Had to replace a fuel injector after about 150,000 miles. Had some bushings replaced. The only design short coming I noticed was that the tail/brake light harness connected to the trunk lid developed a short after opening/closing the trunk repeatedly. Seemed like that could have been designed a little better. The 3.2 engine has good power. I thought the 2.7 was lacking when I tested it. A big safe car, it let me drive the family all over. Comfortable on long commute. Got 19-22 mpg. The trunk is big - can easily fit 3-4 big lacrosse bags. Inside roomy enough for 4 growing teenagers plus a driver. Has enough of a sporty feel that it can be fun to drive. Now its going to be my teenagers car to drive. I trust it to carry him safely.
