What Problems Does the 2004 Hyundai Elantra Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2004 Hyundai Elantra often revolve around the automatic transmission. Some owners have experienced slipping or rough shifting, particularly after exceeding 100,000 miles. Suspension components, such as struts and bushings, can wear out, leading to a bouncy ride. Rust is a significant concern, especially in regions with road salt usage during winter. Inspect rocker panels, wheel wells, and undercarriage thoroughly. Engine oil leaks, particularly from valve cover gaskets, are also relatively common.

Check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any active recalls. Common areas addressed in recalls for this generation of Elantra have included issues related to airbag deployment and brake light switch malfunction. Long-term reliability can be affected by consistent maintenance. Neglecting oil changes or ignoring warning lights can accelerate wear and tear. Some owners have reported issues with the air conditioning system over time. It's crucial to obtain a pre-purchase inspection from a trusted mechanic to assess the overall condition and potential future repair needs. Prioritize addressing any identified issues promptly to maximize the vehicle's lifespan.

How long will the 2004 Hyundai Elantra last?

With proper maintenance, a 2004 Hyundai Elantra can reasonably reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report 15-20 years of service. However, longevity greatly depends on consistent care. Oil changes, timely repairs, and addressing minor issues promptly are crucial. Long-term durability is affected by rust, especially in colder climates. The automatic transmission can become a weak point over time, requiring rebuilding or replacement. Suspension wear is also common. Proper maintenance can mitigate these issues, but ultimately age and wear will take their toll.
Positive Owner Reviews

Perfect starter car. Very reliable, will not need work. Only has superficial and very slight damage. It has new tires and is super reliable. The battery is also only six months old and should last a long while. It's not the most fancy, but gets the job done. Cons it smoky and a tape is stuck in the tape deck but I use the lighter for a Bluetooth plug in so it's no problem.

This car met all my expectations. A lot of leg room, especially in front. And what I love in parti-cular of this car is its low fuel consumption.

Our 2004 Hyundai Elantra was named Shelly by our daughter (at age7) when purchased in Dec 2004. With only 200 miles, she was brand new to me/us. Fast forward 13 years, Shelly is still working as good as the day purchased. She now has 175k+ miles. She may be old but I love her. Although others may even turn their noses up to the lack of technology in a now 13 year old car, she can still run with the best of them. She has been one the best purchases I have ever made. She has taken us daily to work, school, practices, games, beaches, and even the dreadful driving lesson when our little girl finally turned 16yo. The memories are endless. Never once has Shelly complain -seriously not once. We had to replaced one radiatior due to a bad tech during a routine oil change. Other than that all original pieces and parts have gone untouched. In 2017, I still drive Shelly daily confident she will take me anywhere I need to go. I can't say enough abt our Shelly except thank you to Hyundai for such a great car.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2004 Hyundai Elantra's tech features were relatively basic for its time. Standard entertainment included a CD player and AM/FM radio. Higher trims (like the GT) offered an upgraded audio system as an option. There were no built-in navigation or advanced driver-assistance systems available.

Safety features included standard front airbags. Side airbags were an optional upgrade on some models. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) were also available as an option, enhancing braking performance in emergency situations. Driver-assistance features were virtually non-existent compared to modern standards.

Crash test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally showed decent performance for frontal impact protection. However, side-impact protection was not as strong, especially in models without side airbags. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) also conducted tests, and results varied depending on the specific test and model configuration. It's important to research specific crash test ratings for the 2004 model year to understand its safety performance compared to other vehicles of that era. Keep in mind that safety standards have evolved significantly since 2004.

2004 Hyundai Elantra Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2004 Hyundai Elantra ranged from approximately $13,000 to $16,000 depending on the trim level and options. As a used car, expect to find them priced between $1,500 and $4,000, heavily dependent on condition, mileage, and location. The Elantra has depreciated significantly due to its age. Factors affecting resale value include mechanical condition (transmission, engine), rust presence, overall appearance (interior and exterior), mileage, and the presence of a clean title. Low mileage examples in excellent condition command a higher price, but expect depreciation to be substantial regardless.

2004 Hyundai Elantra Cost of Ownership

The 2004 Hyundai Elantra is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically low. Fuel consumption is decent, contributing to affordability. Maintenance is relatively inexpensive, with readily available and affordable parts. However, potential repairs, especially concerning the transmission and rust, can add up. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on the vehicle's condition at purchase. A well-maintained Elantra will be cheaper to own than one requiring extensive repairs.

2004 Hyundai Elantra Insurance

Insurance for a 2004 Hyundai Elantra is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2004 Hyundai Elantra Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2004 Hyundai Elantra competed with cars like the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Mazda 3, and Ford Focus. In terms of performance, the Elantra was generally comparable, though not as sporty as the Mazda 3. The Corolla and Civic were known for superior reliability at the time, while the Focus offered a more engaging driving experience. The Elantra stood out primarily on price, often undercutting its rivals.

Feature-wise, the Elantra offered a competitive set of standard equipment for the price. However, the Corolla and Civic had a slightly better reputation for build quality and resale value. If reliability is paramount, the Corolla or Civic are better choices, though they may cost more upfront. The Mazda 3 provides a more engaging driving experience. The Ford Focus offered similar value but had its own reliability concerns. Overall, the Elantra represents a solid budget-friendly option, but trade-offs are made in long-term reliability compared to the Japanese rivals. For budget-conscious buyers, a well-maintained Focus is a similar alternative but research its reliability history thoroughly. If budget allows, the Corolla or Civic are superior choices.

Final Verdict: Is the 2004 Hyundai Elantra a Good Sedan?

The 2004 Hyundai Elantra is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking affordable transportation. It's worth buying *if* found in good condition with documented maintenance history and a thorough pre-purchase inspection. Prioritize models with minimal rust and a smooth-shifting transmission. A well-maintained GLS trim offers a good balance of features and value. The GT is suitable for those seeking a slightly sportier experience. Avoid models with high mileage and obvious signs of neglect. Consider it a practical choice if you understand potential maintenance needs and are prepared for repairs. Don't overpay, given its age and depreciation.

Ol' Reliable

Is it pretty? No. Does it drive fast? No. Is it a chick magnet? Certainly not. But my 2004 Hyundai Elantra has excelled according to a criterion far more important than any of these others: reliability. Maintenance costs are low. Hardly ever needs a repair. Gets me from Point A to Point B on a regular basis. Isn't that what cars are supposed to do?

The best bang for your buck ... ever

This car had 140K miles when we got it, it was already cheap, and we took it to 200K, just routine repairs: brakes, rotors, oil, replaced timing belt, replaced starter. This guy only needs gas and has been reliable.

Great car to drive. Wish I didn't have to sell it

Car has always performed well, despite the normal maintenance I've needed to put into it. Engine solid. Transmission has no known issues. It's lasted 200,000 and all major systems still work great, with the exception of a few electrical glitches.

Awesome Little Car

I did extensive research before buying this car. Many good things stood out. One of them is the car's absolutely wonderful reliability. Out of every review I have read, not one person said the car had any major issues. The same goes for mine! It goes. It sips gas. It has just enough room. It's not an ugly car. I might even say it looks nice. All it needs is basic maintenance and a little love. And it will keep on chugging. Easily past 250,000 miles. Mine is at 146,000 miles and still drives very well, with no costly engine or transmission issues, unlike some other car brands (*cough cough* gm, ford, even honda). It's an all-around good, A to B car that won't let you down.
