The 2022 Hyundai Sonata is a mid-size sedan, part of the eighth generation (2020-present) of the Sonata. Key trims include SE, SEL, SEL Plus, N Line, and Limited. Its popularity stems from its striking design, spacious interior, and comprehensive features. The pricing range typically falls between $24,000 and $35,000, depending on the trim and options. Its coupe-like roofline and bold styling set it apart in a crowded segment.
The Good

The 2022 Sonata boasts a comfortable ride, eye-catching design appealing to emotional buyers, and excellent fuel efficiency for practical needs. Its reliable powertrains and a generous warranty provide peace of mind. Performance varies by engine, with the N Line offering a sporty experience. It delivers great value for its price.

The Bad

Some may find the base engine underpowered. The touch-sensitive controls can be distracting for some drivers. Although the styling is a strength, the rear visibility can be somewhat compromised. Potential buyers should also be aware of reported issues with certain electronic components and consider extended warranties for added security.

What Problems Does the 2022 Hyundai Sonata Have?

The 2022 Hyundai Sonata has experienced some reported issues, although not widespread. Some owners have reported concerns with the infotainment system, experiencing glitches or freezes. There have been isolated reports related to the DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) in the N Line model, involving jerky shifting or hesitation. Another area of concern has been the adaptive cruise control system, with some owners noting inconsistent performance.

Recalls affecting the 2022 Sonata have been issued, primarily related to potential safety issues. Check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for the most up-to-date recall information, as these can change.

Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the engine and transmission. While Hyundai's powertrain warranty is generous (10 years/100,000 miles for the original owner), issues arising after that period can be costly. Some earlier Sonata model years (pre-2020) had well-publicized engine problems, increasing consumer awareness of potential engine issues. Proper maintenance, including timely oil changes and adherence to the recommended service schedule, is crucial for mitigating long-term reliability risks. Staying informed about any Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) related to the 2022 Sonata is also advisable.

How long will the 2022 Hyundai Sonata last?

With consistent maintenance, a 2022 Hyundai Sonata can realistically provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-13 years of service. Regular oil changes, timely fluid flushes, and addressing minor issues promptly are key.

Long-term durability can be affected by climate and driving conditions. Potential weaknesses might emerge in the suspension components, particularly if driven on rough roads frequently. Electronic components, like the infotainment system, could also show signs of wear over time. Preventative maintenance and careful driving habits will significantly extend its lifespan.

2022 Hyundai Sonata Insurance

Insurance for a 2022 Hyundai Sonata is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Passenger Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2022 Hyundai Sonata Compare to Other Passenger Sedan?

The 2022 Hyundai Sonata competes with the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, and Mazda 6.

Performance: The Sonata N Line offers a competitive performance edge, while the Camry TRD and Accord 2.0T are similar alternatives. The base engine performance is adequate but lags behind some rivals.

Features: The Sonata often boasts a strong feature set for its price, rivaling or exceeding competitors in certain areas, particularly in technology and driver-assistance systems. The Accord and Camry are also well-equipped.

Reliability: The Camry and Accord have historically enjoyed stronger reliability reputations. The Sonata's reliability is generally good, but some perceive it as slightly lower than the Toyota and Honda. Hyundai's warranty helps mitigate this concern.

Price: The Sonata is often competitively priced, offering excellent value for the money. It often undercuts the Camry and Accord slightly.

Alternatives:
  • Toyota Camry: Excellent reliability, strong resale value, but more conservative styling.
  • Honda Accord: Well-rounded, sporty handling, and a spacious interior, but potentially pricier.
  • Mazda 6: Stylish design and engaging driving dynamics, but a smaller rear seat.
A 2022 Kia K5 is very similar, sharing the same platform and many components, but with slightly different styling. If reliability is a top concern, the Camry or Accord might be better choices. If styling and features are paramount, the Sonata is a strong contender. If you want something sporty, consider the Mazda 6 or the Sonata N-Line.

Final Verdict: Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata a Good Passenger Sedan?

The 2022 Hyundai Sonata is ideal for buyers seeking a stylish, well-equipped, and fuel-efficient mid-size sedan at a competitive price. It's worth buying, especially as a used vehicle, given the depreciation. The SEL Plus or Limited trims offer the best balance of features and value.

If you prioritize sporty performance, the N Line is a good choice. However, if long-term reliability is your top concern, consider a Toyota Camry or Honda Accord. A thorough inspection and a vehicle history report are essential when purchasing a used Sonata. Overall, the Sonata offers compelling value in its segment.

So far so good

Bought the Sonata n line, the car is quick and looks great. Awesome gas mileage too for the performance you get out of it. All of that on regular gas. Fun full size sedan.

Avoid this car

This is my 3rd and last Sonata. The car is a royal pain. It automatically sets the parking brake even on level ground. The push button gear shift mechanism often has to be pushed multiple times before the selected gear will engage. The computer screens flip randomly from time to time. You have to disengage the engine start/stop system every time you get in the car. This is just not a user friendly vehicle.
