2014 Hyundai Sonata Review: A Comfortable Sedan With Some Minor Updates

Rating: 4.31
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2014 Hyundai Sonata represents the seventh generation of Hyundai's popular mid-size sedan, a segment where it has consistently challenged established players. Available as a four-door sedan, the 2014 Sonata offered a blend of style, features, and value. Key trims included the GLS, SE, Limited, and Sport. Its popularity stemmed from its spacious interior, generous standard features, and attractive pricing, typically ranging from the low teens to mid-twenties (thousands of dollars) when new. It stood out with its "Fluidic Sculpture" design, which gave it a sleek and modern look.
The Good

The 2014 Hyundai Sonata offered a compelling blend of advantages. Practically, it delivered good fuel efficiency and a spacious, comfortable interior. Reliability was generally solid. Emotionally, its stylish design appealed to buyers seeking a modern look. The Sonata's strong value proposition, with many features for the price, was a major draw, making it a smart and satisfying choice.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2014 Hyundai Sonata include some reports of engine issues, particularly with the 2.4L engine, involving potential oil consumption problems. The suspension, while comfortable, isn't particularly sporty. Also, some owners have reported minor interior trim issues. It's important to check service history for oil consumption and potential recall work.

What Problems Does the 2014 Hyundai Sonata Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2014 Hyundai Sonata often revolve around engine issues, especially excessive oil consumption, primarily affecting the 2.4L engine. Some owners have reported engine knocking and even engine failure. Hyundai issued recalls related to engine issues for certain Sonata models from this era, so checking the VIN for outstanding recalls is crucial. Other reported problems include issues with the car's paint, leading to premature chipping or fading, and some reports of problems with the car's electrical system, like faulty sensors or malfunctioning components. Long-term reliability can be a concern if the engine oil consumption issue is present and not addressed promptly. The 2014 model year is generally associated with more engine-related complaints than some other model years within the generation. It is recommended to check the vehicle's maintenance history for regular oil changes and any documented engine repairs or oil consumption tests. Prospective buyers should have a mechanic inspect the engine thoroughly before purchasing, particularly checking for signs of oil leaks or unusual engine noises. Also, checking for recalls related to the brake light switch is advised.

How long will the 2014 Hyundai Sonata last?

With proper maintenance, a 2014 Hyundai Sonata can realistically reach 150,000-200,000 miles or more. Years of service often depend on driving habits, but 10-15 years is achievable. Long-term durability hinges on addressing potential engine oil consumption issues early on. Weaknesses over time tend to include suspension component wear (struts, bushings), and potential electronic issues (sensors, infotainment). Regular oil changes, timely repairs, and addressing recalls are critical for maximizing the vehicle's lifespan.
Positive Owner Reviews

It's really my first car and it is wonderful. The inside is definitely me and it drives so very smooth. Even with a cracked side mirror, it's still an awesome car
Kim Carver
I find this car reliable, great on gas, appearance is a +! The cost, miles on car and gas mileage were variables I considered when purchasing. I am overall very happy.
Sassy
I like it. The only downside is the brake light bulbs melting into the sockets. 250 each time u have to replace for each 1. Both sides melt into sockets. I feel this should be recalled. Everybody I know that has one they all melt into the sockets.
Negative Owner Reviews
Eric
Recently bought a used 14 with 47k mi. Sits too low, terrible ride. Every tiny bump in the road is felt and sent straight up to the driver's seat. The car may be able to endure the shock but the driver won't. Get rid of it and get a Camry or accord.
LC
I have owned this car for 8 years and it is digging me to death. I put out $1854 last May for the hybrid battery. It came back to me with the brake light sensor coming on every once in awhile. Then it stayed on. I had my brakes checked - absolutely nothing wrong. Now this gawd awful beeping started sounding off. I take it in they tell me "it is the boost kit. Oh and it will cost $1800 to repair". What the xxxx? I will never buy another hyundai or hybrid ever!!!
Be aware
I didn't realize, that it somehow uses up one quart of oil, in between oil changes. And many of my bulbs have gone out, which I've had to replace each several times (headlights, taillights, brake lights and turn lights)

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2014 Hyundai Sonata offered a reasonable array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features on the base GLS included a six-speaker sound system with CD player, satellite radio, and auxiliary input, along with Bluetooth phone connectivity. Higher trims like the Limited added features like a touchscreen infotainment system, navigation, rearview camera, and Hyundai's Blue Link telematics system, which included features like remote start and vehicle location. Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern cars, but included options like blind-spot monitoring on upper trims. Standard safety features included antilock brakes, stability control, traction control, front-seat side airbags, and side curtain airbags. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave the 2014 Sonata a 5-star overall safety rating. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) awarded the Sonata a "Top Safety Pick" designation. Optional features included a panoramic sunroof, upgraded audio systems, and leather seating. While not as advanced as newer vehicles, the 2014 Sonata provided a solid level of technology and safety for its class and era.

2014 Hyundai Sonata Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2014 Hyundai Sonata had a starting MSRP in the low $20,000s, with higher trims reaching the mid-$20,000s. Current used market prices typically range from around $6,000 to $12,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Sonata has depreciated significantly due to its age and the emergence of newer models with updated technology and designs. Factors affecting resale value include the car's condition, maintenance history, mileage, and whether it has any outstanding recalls. The engine oil consumption issue also negatively impacts resale values. Cars with clean titles and documented maintenance records command higher prices.

2014 Hyundai Sonata Cost of Ownership

The 2014 Hyundai Sonata generally offers reasonable ownership costs. Insurance premiums are typically moderate. Fuel costs are decent, especially with the base engine. Routine maintenance is affordable, but potential engine repairs can significantly increase costs if oil consumption issues arise. Repair costs are average for the class. Overall, the Sonata can be economical to own if it's well-maintained and doesn't experience major engine problems; otherwise, long-term ownership could become costly.

2014 Hyundai Sonata Insurance

Insurance for a 2014 Hyundai Sonata is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2014 Hyundai Sonata Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2014 Hyundai Sonata competed against the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Ford Fusion, and Nissan Altima. In terms of performance, the Sonata's base engine was adequate, while the turbocharged engine offered competitive power. The Camry and Accord generally had stronger reputations for long-term reliability. Feature-wise, the Sonata was often well-equipped for its price, sometimes offering more standard features than its rivals. The Ford Fusion offered a more stylish design and more engaging driving experience, while the Altima provided good fuel economy. Compared to the Camry and Accord, the Sonata may not hold its value as well. Alternatives:
  • Toyota Camry: A safer bet for reliability.
  • Honda Accord: Known for its well-rounded performance and resale value.
  • Ford Fusion: A more stylish and fun-to-drive option.
If reliability is a top priority, the Camry or Accord might be better choices. However, if value for money and features are key, the Sonata remains a competitive option, especially if a pre-purchase inspection reveals no major issues.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 Hyundai Sonata a Good Sedan?

The 2014 Hyundai Sonata is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a spacious and feature-rich mid-size sedan. It can be worth buying *used*, but only after a thorough pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic, focusing on potential engine oil consumption issues. Avoid models with a history of poor maintenance or signs of engine problems. The SE trim offers a good balance of features and value. While not as reliable as some rivals, a well-maintained 2014 Sonata can provide affordable transportation for several years. A detailed Carfax report and inspection are critical before purchase.

I've premium Auto version of 2014 Hyundai Sonata.

I've premium Auto version of 2014 Hyundai Sonata. Purchased in 2024 with very low Kms of about 65k but had an issue with starter motor when it came to 70k, other than that, it now runs lit. Been servicing on every 5-7k, it tops comfort & luxury & can challenge any modern car with similar features.

Four and Counting

My 2014 Sonata is my fourth Hyundai. I never have had a major problem with any of them. My current Sonata Limited has 70k plus on it. My only complaint on my current car is that the passenger seat sits too low and its a little difficult for the passenger to exit. Other than that I wouldnt hesitate to buy another Hyundai.

Do not buy a Sonata!!!

Get ready to stress out if you buy a 2014 Sonata. Your alarm will go off on the middle of the night and the dealerships are clueless of how to fix it. But most importantly the engine blows up. Good luck.

Engine problems

I loved it when I first got it. I changed the oil religiously, and kept up with all the maintenance needed. Then, bam, my engine locked. There was no oil leak, no signs. It started burning oil the mechanic said. I believe there was a defect in the engine. There is a recall on this model but when I called, they said it wasn't my VIN number.
