What Problems Does the 2009 Hyundai Sonata Have?
Electrical glitches, such as issues with the power windows, door locks, and audio system, have also been reported. Some owners have experienced problems with the suspension components, including premature wear of struts and shocks.
While the 2009 model year itself didn't have a large number of recalls, it's essential to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any safety recalls related to specific VINs. Long-term reliability concerns generally revolve around the longevity of the engine and transmission, as well as the durability of interior components. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and inspections, is crucial to mitigate these potential issues and extend the lifespan of the vehicle. It is recommended that potential buyers have a pre-purchase inspection performed by a qualified mechanic to identify any existing or potential problems.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles, but included standard features like anti-lock brakes (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC) on some trims.
Safety features included front and side airbags, as well as side curtain airbags. Optional features varied by trim.
Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA are generally good for the 2009 Sonata. The IIHS gave it a "Good" rating in frontal offset and side impact tests. NHTSA ratings may vary depending on the specific test. It's important to consult both IIHS and NHTSA websites for detailed crash-test results. Keep in mind that safety technology has significantly advanced since 2009, and newer vehicles generally offer superior crash protection and driver-assistance systems like blind-spot monitoring and lane departure warning, which were not available on the 2009 Sonata.

How Does the 2009 Hyundai Sonata Compare to Other Sedan?
The Ford Fusion offered a more engaging driving experience and arguably a more stylish design. The Nissan Altima provided a sportier feel than the Sonata.
Alternatives to consider include the Toyota Camry for its reliability and resale value, the Honda Accord for its balanced performance and features, or the Ford Fusion for its driving dynamics and styling. The Sonata is a good choice for budget-conscious buyers prioritizing space and features, but those seeking ultimate reliability or a sportier driving experience may prefer its rivals. The Mazda 6 offers similar styling with more driver engagement.

Nice car, but expected better. We bought a 2009 Hyundai Sonata back in 2011 with 77k miles. Although it was a comfortable car, it was not very reliable, about a year after we got it we were on the road and all of sudden the car kept stalling so we pulled over into a Hotel and tried to see what the issue was, the car would not start anymore and we didn't want to risk flooding the engine. It was not the battery, It turns out the starter broke and needed to be replaced and apparently this model year had a recall on starters so there goes 600 dollars out the door. Other issues were the wheel hub and bearing had to be replaced on the one of the wheels and then the caliper because the brake started burning up and looked as though it was overheating and driving the car was dangerous at that point. Also brake lights and headlight bulbs started running out after a year which I thought was kind of weird for a car that was only 3 years old. The last thing was the transmission started jerking and kicking every time we began slowing down at a light or stop sign and that was very annoying. Overall is was a nice car, but had too many issues, pickup was lackluster, the car value was bad it depreciated very quickly, after 2 years of owning the car it was worth only 6 or 7 grand. I would not recommend this year model. Better off purchasing the newer models.

Good first carIt's a good first car for teenagers, suspension is a bit quirky but nothing to dangerous just makes for a less than smooth ride nothing too bad.

very satisfied in East Texasbought the 09 sonata used, w/39k miles, in 2010. have 280k on it now, and it still does everything well. can go anywhere. has been the most reliable, trouble free car i have ever owned. no leaks, uses no oil. body is still pretty tight and the silver paint, other than road debris dings, still looks good. with me, reliability and economy are primary concerns. still trouble free and still delivers 30+ on the highway, so we will be together for a while longer.

Love this Car - Reliable - Looks GreatThe review from Mobile, AL is not for this specific car. It is about a 2009 Sonata, SE in general. There have been NO mechanical issues with this car.

Wonderful Car - Reliable - Owned 11 YearsThis car has absolutely no mechanical issues. Totally reliable and comfortable to drive. I just purchased a 2020 Sonata SEL because my 2009 Sonata SE has been so great for the 11 years I have owned it.

One of My FavoritesI bought the car (2009 Hyundai Sonata Limited) at roughly 135k miles, and have actually had only one issue in the 20k miles I have driven it so far. The only issue I had was my compressor went out, which was definitely pricey to fix but that's just how it goes with newer vehicles. Had to replace a TPMS sensor because it died, but that's it. No check engine lights, no issues with brakes or mechanical issues at all. I love the way it drives, very smooth and definitely gets up to speed when you want it to. I will say that the suspension isn't the best, you definitely feel almost every bump. Speed bumps are hellacious in this car, even with a mechanic confirming everything was still tight. I would recommend this car to anyone. Sound system is really nice, too. I also am a fan of the heated seats and steering wheel controls.

Excellent car for commuteI own 2009 Hyundai Sonata 2.4 L model. Ever since i have bought this vehicle, i haven't rented any car for long trips. This car is very comfortable. Have Leather seats, heated seats, i have changed the music system / receiver (replaced with Sony which has bluetooth - wow it sounds so good on infinity speakers). Have been driving since 4 years and have no issues .. bought when it had 86K miles and now it has 136K miles and going strong. Definitely worth than Toyota Camry and Honda Accord which has cheap interiors.
