The Good
The 2002 Hyundai Sonata offered a compelling value proposition. Practically, it provided a comfortable ride, spacious cabin, and reasonable fuel efficiency. Emotionally, the attractive price point and comprehensive warranty provided peace of mind. While not a performance leader, it offered adequate power for daily driving and was considered reasonably reliable for its era.
The Bad
Potential weaknesses of the 2002 Hyundai Sonata include potential issues with the automatic transmission, particularly with higher mileage. Some owners reported electrical problems and issues with the air conditioning system. Rust can also be a concern, especially in regions with harsh winters or salty roads. Regular maintenance is crucial to prevent these problems.

Analysis
What Problems Does the 2002 Hyundai Sonata Have?
Rust was a significant long-term reliability concern, especially in regions where road salt was used during winter. The undercarriage and body panels were susceptible to corrosion. Engine issues, though less frequent than transmission problems, sometimes occurred, including oil leaks and valve train noise. While specific recalls for the 2002 model year might be limited now, checking with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) for any past recalls related to safety is always recommended when considering a used vehicle. Overall, maintaining a 2002 Sonata required diligent upkeep to address potential issues before they escalated.
How long will the 2002 Hyundai Sonata last?
Long-term durability weaknesses typically involve rust, especially in areas with road salt. Automatic transmissions are also a common failure point beyond 150,000 miles. Electrical components can become problematic due to age and corrosion. Therefore, careful inspection and a well-documented maintenance history are essential when considering a used 2002 Sonata.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Driver-assistance features were minimal, limited to cruise control on the GLS trim. Safety features included dual front airbags. Antilock brakes (ABS) were optional on the GLS. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring available.
Crash test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) should be researched separately as results may vary depending on the specific test and model year updates. Due to the age of the vehicle, it's unlikely to meet modern safety standards. Overall, the 2002 Sonata provided basic technology and safety features adequate for its time but significantly less advanced compared to contemporary vehicles. The focus was on affordability and practicality rather than cutting-edge innovation.

2002 Hyundai Sonata Prices and Market Value
The Sonata experienced substantial depreciation, typical for most vehicles, especially those from non-luxury brands. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition (rust-free is a huge plus), mechanical soundness (transmission health is critical), mileage, and a clean title. Low mileage and a meticulous maintenance history can command a slightly higher price, but age is the biggest determining factor.

How Does the 2002 Hyundai Sonata Compare to Other Sedan?
Compared to the Ford Taurus and Chevrolet Malibu, the Sonata offered similar levels of comfort and features at a competitive price. However, the Taurus and Malibu might have offered slightly better handling in some iterations.
Alternatives to the 2002 Sonata include a well-maintained Toyota Camry or Honda Accord from the same era, if reliability is a top priority, albeit at a potentially higher price. A Buick Century could be a similar alternative focusing on comfort and value. Ultimately, the Sonata was a good option for buyers prioritizing affordability, but it's essential to carefully inspect any used example for potential issues.

Most reliable car I've ever driven.I've owned and been issued many company cars during the 64 years I've been driving and this 2002 Hyundai Sonata V6 outshines them all. It's been virtually maintenance-free. I purchased it new and have been so satisfied we now have 4 Hyundais in our immediate family.

Still going strong at 250,000 miles! We drove this vehicle for 250,000 miles over the past 15 years, and the only thing beyond regular maintenance that we had to replace was an alternator a few months before we gave the car to our grandchildren (when we purchased a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe). We did our part by maintaining it, but the car delivered. When we gave it away, we were getting around 30 mpg. It was comfortable, had plenty of power when needed, and was easy to drive. If you can get one of these used, it would be a wise purchase.

I did test dive this carthe car was a nice test dive, I am thinking of buy it for one of my kids soon. and I have a friend who he said that it has been the most reliable car ever! Never broke down or left him stranded. The only thing he said was that he had to do to the car is a new timing belt, water pump, and tensioner every 60k and a transmission service every 30k. If you keep up on the maintenance he said that the cars run forever and wont let you down. Its nice because your getting the reliability of a Honda or Toyota at a fraction of the price! so you do not have to pay what you pay for a Honda or Toyota....

Sonata, aptly namedFor nearly 15 years I drove this little car for everything; commuting, pleasure, shopping. During these years it never graced repair shops except for regular maintenance; consequently I never gave it much thought 'til last week. Engine light came on. Michael at All Star Hyundai said...3 little leaks, not big enough to leave tell tale drip on the floor. It would be expensive to fix so I gave it some thought. This could be the first to a series of repair visits I thought...the car is quite old after all. Silently I said thank you and sadly said goodbye...to my little car.
