What Problems Does the 2012 Jaguar XK Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2012 Jaguar XK often revolve around electrical gremlins. The infotainment system, in particular, can be prone to glitches and freezes. Issues with the navigation system and audio system are not uncommon. Some owners have reported problems with the adaptive suspension system (if equipped), leading to costly repairs. There are also potential concerns regarding the timing chain tensioners in the 5.0-liter V8 engine, which can cause significant engine damage if they fail.

Recalls for the 2012 XK were issued for problems like fuel leaks due to faulty fuel injectors and issues with the airbags. Long-term reliability can be a concern, especially as the vehicle ages. The complex electronics and sophisticated systems require regular maintenance and can be expensive to repair. Specific model year issues are not drastically different from other years in the second-generation XK, but ensuring all recalls have been addressed and thoroughly inspecting the vehicle's maintenance history is crucial.

How long will the 2012 Jaguar XK last?

With consistent maintenance, a 2012 Jaguar XK can reasonably reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or provide 10-15 years of service. However, its long-term durability hinges heavily on adherence to the maintenance schedule. Weaknesses over time tend to be related to the electrical systems, suspension components, and potential issues with the engine's timing chain. Proper fluid changes, regular inspections, and addressing minor issues promptly are key to maximizing the vehicle's lifespan. Neglecting maintenance can lead to significant and costly repairs.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 Jaguar XK features a navigation system with a touchscreen interface, a premium Bowers & Wilkins sound system, Bluetooth connectivity, and keyless entry/ignition. Standard safety features include anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control, front and side airbags, and a rearview camera.

Optional features included adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and parking sensors. These enhanced both safety and convenience. The infotainment system, while offering these features, can be dated compared to modern systems and sometimes lacks user-friendliness.

Crash test ratings from NHTSA and IIHS were not readily available for the 2012 Jaguar XK. However, the car was designed with a robust structure and comprehensive safety equipment for its time. Driver-assistance features like adaptive cruise control were designed to improve safety and comfort on long drives. Overall, the 2012 XK balances luxury with reasonable technology and safety for its era, but buyers should consider its age when evaluating tech features compared to newer vehicles.

2012 Jaguar XK Prices and Market Value

The 2012 Jaguar XK had a starting MSRP around $78,000, with the XKR reaching closer to $98,000 when new. Current used market prices typically range from $15,000 to $30,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim. The XK has experienced significant depreciation due to its age and higher maintenance costs compared to some competitors. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, service history, and the presence of desirable options. Convertibles tend to hold their value slightly better than coupes.

2012 Jaguar XK Cost of Ownership

The 2012 Jaguar XK is generally considered costly to own. Insurance rates are higher than average due to its sports car classification and potential repair costs. Fuel economy is not exceptional. Maintenance and repair costs can be significant, especially for specialized parts and labor. Long-term ownership requires a budget for potential issues with the electrical system, suspension, and engine components. This is not an economical choice, but rather a car for those who prioritize luxury and performance and are prepared for associated expenses.

2012 Jaguar XK Insurance

Insurance for a 2012 Jaguar XK is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Passenger Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 Jaguar XK Compare to Other Passenger Sedan?

The 2012 Jaguar XK competes with grand touring cars like the BMW 6 Series, Mercedes-Benz SL, and Porsche 911. In terms of performance, the XKR can match or exceed the performance of some competitors, but the base XK is less powerful than some rivals. Features are comparable for its time, but newer models offer more advanced tech. Reliability is where the XK falls short compared to the German marques, which generally have better track records. Price-wise, a used XK is often more affordable than a used 911 or SL, making it an attractive option for buyers on a budget.

Alternatives to consider include:
  • BMW 6 Series: Better reliability and a more modern feel.
  • Mercedes-Benz SL: Renowned for its luxurious features and strong performance.
  • Porsche 911: Offers superior handling and a sportier driving experience, but at a higher price point.

For buyers prioritizing reliability and modern tech, the BMW or Mercedes might be better choices. For pure driving excitement, the 911 is superior, albeit more expensive.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Jaguar XK a Good Passenger Sedan?

The 2012 Jaguar XK is ideal for those who appreciate elegant British styling, powerful performance (especially in XKR trim), and a luxurious interior. It's worth buying as a used vehicle if you're willing to accept potentially higher maintenance costs and understand its reliability limitations. The XKR offers a significant performance upgrade, but even the base XK provides a rewarding driving experience. A thorough inspection and a detailed maintenance history are essential before purchasing. It is most suitable for someone who wants a stylish grand tourer at a reasonable price point and is prepared for the ownership costs associated with a luxury sports car.

12 XK it's about time

Got my 12 XK and absolutely love the lines. The wide hips in the rear with growl of the exhaust makes me happy. Absolutely love the car, don't care for no Bluetooth car play, but making due. 83K om the odometer and paid 12 for it, not bad. Will enjoy beefing up suspension, PowerPlant and make this egg plant colored exotic my baby!

This "cat" always lands on it's feet!

After searching for months, this jewel fell into my lap! I have been a "Jag" junkie since I was a kid. Everything about this car was well thought out (less the rear seats). Available driving options, comfortability, handling, and exterior design is second to none! I have the convertible version which just screams sexy! Combined 5.0 litre power plant with the factory exhaust system makes this jem an absolute pleasure to drive. I personally recommend this car to everyone.

High performance car

Fine example of a classic British sports car. Beautiful lines, gobs of power, no room for back seat passengers with legs. Not practical for family use but provides serious driving enjoyment.

Very reliable

I've had my 2012 XKR a little over a 1&1/2 now. Only 39k miles. No problems really. Just a faulty TPS module. No worries though. Great car! My Aston Martin Vantage Roadster previous has better leg room but this Jaguar makes up in reliability.

Most Beautiful Coupe anywhere

This is the best car we have ever owned. It runs and looks great! Never had any problem with it. It is comfortable like a sedan but handles like a super sports car.

Beautiful, luxury and stunning performance

Looks beautiful, sounds awesome....really...awesome, great GT ride and it is 520hp, 0-60 in 4.2s. It has everything in a car you could want unless you want to haul family or stuff. I 've owned it 4 years and it has been very reliable. No issues, breakdowns, faults etc.

Fast, beautiful and classy: Jaguar XKR

Perfect sports car. Gorgeous, fast and comfortable. Looks like a $250,000 Aston Martin. Very reliable and fun to drive. Maintenance costs are minimal per year.
