2007 Nissan Versa Review: Not 2007's Best Compact, but One of the Better Budget Hatchbacks

Rating: 4.25
Based on 65 Owner Reviews
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2007 Nissan Versa marked Nissan's entry into the subcompact segment in North America. Available as a hatchback and sedan, its first generation ran from 2007 to 2012. Key trims included the S, SL, and later, a base model. New, prices ranged roughly from $12,000 to $16,000. The Versa stood out for its surprisingly spacious interior, particularly its rear legroom, making it a popular choice for budget-conscious buyers needing practicality.
The Good

The 2007 Nissan Versa offered excellent value and fuel efficiency, appealing to practical buyers. Its spacious interior provided comfort unusual for its class. While not a performance car, its adequate power suited city driving. Emotionally, it gave buyers a sense of practicality and value without being too basic.

The Bad

The 2007 Nissan Versa had some weaknesses. The interior materials were basic, and the driving experience wasn't particularly engaging. Common issues include problems with the continuously variable transmission (CVT) on some models. Owners should also watch for potential issues with the ignition system and premature wear of brake components.

What Problems Does the 2007 Nissan Versa Have?

The 2007 Nissan Versa, while generally reliable for its time and class, does have some frequently reported problems. One common issue is related to the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). Some owners have reported issues like shuddering, slipping, or even complete transmission failure, especially at higher mileage. These problems aren't universally experienced, but potential buyers should be aware and inspect the transmission carefully, especially if considering a model with the CVT.

Other reported problems include issues with the ignition system, such as difficulty starting or stalling. This can sometimes be attributed to a faulty ignition coil or crankshaft position sensor. Premature wear of brake components, particularly the brake pads and rotors, has also been reported.

Recalls for the 2007 Nissan Versa, while not extensive, should be checked on the NHTSA website using the VIN to ensure any outstanding recall work has been completed. These recalls typically address potential safety-related defects.

Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the aforementioned CVT issues. Proper maintenance, including regular fluid changes, can help mitigate some of these risks. Additionally, keeping up with routine maintenance, such as oil changes and tune-ups, is essential for maintaining the overall reliability of the vehicle. While the 2007 model year doesn't have a significantly different set of problems compared to other years in the first generation, it's always prudent to have a pre-purchase inspection performed by a qualified mechanic.

How long will the 2007 Nissan Versa last?

A 2007 Nissan Versa, with proper maintenance, can reasonably reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Many owners have reported exceeding this mileage with diligent care. However, long-term durability hinges heavily on maintenance habits. Neglecting oil changes or transmission fluid services can significantly shorten its lifespan.

The CVT transmission remains a potential long-term weakness. Regular fluid changes (more frequent than Nissan's recommendation) are crucial for CVT-equipped models. Rust can also become a concern in regions with harsh winters and road salt. Inspecting the undercarriage for rust is advisable when purchasing a used 2007 Versa.

I bought my 2007 Nissan versa, hatchback used, back in 2016. It had low miles and was in very nice condition. Like most Nissans, the CVT is slow starting out, but develops excellent speed, once it shifts into the higher gears. It can hold its own on the road against larger vehicles. It is not built as well as the small Hondas, and Toyotas, but it is a good car for the money. I have close to 90 thousand miles on my versa. It's my daily driver. And, I haven't had to do much work to it, thus far. I've done tires, brakes, battery, and fluid changes. That's about it. I am running on the original engine (1.8L), original transmission (6-Speed CVT), original starter, alternator, electronic ignition system, exhaust system, Ect. Stuff will wear out, but a pretty decent car...
NKR
After 13 years my wife still loves to drive it to work everyday. This car starts every time we crank it and before we know it, the speed it above limit.
Natalia
I love driving this car! Has a nice zip to it. Fun to drive! Perfect for travel. Economic. Plenty of leg room. Comfortable and clean. Cozy. New radio with Bluetooth and Navigation. Amazing! Cold AC.
Negative Owner Reviews
Hollie Finney
She?s a nice little car not worth all the money I spent on her and still am spending but she drives nice and gets my family back and worth.
Scarebear33
It was passed down to me and over the years it has been in a couple accidents and has still been going strong. Thoroughly impressed! Don't like the transmission though.
Reliable
Bought the car in 2006. It was in for a raddle noise within 3 months of owning. Never found the noise. The low tire pressure light never goes off. Replaced a strut next. Then I had to purchase new tires. Very poor gas mileage. Replaced the transmission in 2009. Next the blower on the air would only work on high. Had it in 4 times before fixed. Now acting up again. It won't start so they replaced the fuel pressure valve. Worked for about a week and now not wanting to start again. There's a poping noise they can't locate problem. This has spent more time in for repairs then my van I traded for it. DON'T PURCHASE THIS CAR!

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2007 Nissan Versa was relatively basic in terms of built-in technology. The base model (S) typically came with a standard AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims, like the SL, often included an upgraded audio system, sometimes with a CD changer. Auxiliary audio input jacks were available on some trims, allowing users to connect their own devices. There were no advanced infotainment systems or touchscreen displays available.

Driver-assistance features were minimal. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) were standard, which was a notable safety feature. Electronic Stability Control (ESC) was not standard and often unavailable, even as an option.

Safety features included standard front airbags and side-impact airbags.

Optional features depended on the trim level and included things like power windows, power locks, keyless entry, and a sunroof.

Crash test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) should be consulted for specific details. Generally, the Versa performed adequately in frontal crash tests, but side-impact protection was sometimes rated lower. These ratings can vary slightly depending on the specific test criteria and should be verified on their respective websites.

2007 Nissan Versa Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2007 Nissan Versa had a starting price around $12,000 for the base model and up to $16,000 for the higher-end SL trim. As of today, used market prices typically range from $2,000 to $6,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Versa has depreciated significantly due to its age, mileage, and the availability of newer, more technologically advanced vehicles.

Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, maintenance history, and geographic location. Models with lower mileage and a well-documented maintenance record command higher prices. The presence of the CVT transmission can sometimes negatively impact resale value due to potential reliability concerns.

2007 Nissan Versa Cost of Ownership

The 2007 Nissan Versa is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically low due to its classification as a subcompact car. Fuel economy is decent, contributing to lower running costs. Maintenance is relatively affordable, with readily available and inexpensive parts. However, potential CVT transmission repairs can be costly. Overall, if major repairs are avoided, the Versa presents a budget-friendly ownership experience, especially for those seeking basic transportation.

2007 Nissan Versa Insurance

Insurance for a 2007 Nissan Versa is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Hatchback with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2007 Nissan Versa Compare to Other Hatchback?

The 2007 Nissan Versa competed against vehicles like the Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris, and Hyundai Accent. In terms of performance, the Versa was adequate but not particularly sporty compared to the Honda Fit, which offered a more engaging driving experience. The Toyota Yaris was known for its excellent fuel economy and reliability, arguably surpassing the Versa in long-term dependability. The Hyundai Accent provided similar value but often with a longer warranty.

In terms of features, the Versa was fairly basic, especially in lower trims. The Honda Fit offered more innovative features, such as its "magic seat" configuration. The Toyota Yaris focused on simplicity and efficiency. The Hyundai Accent provided a competitive feature set at a similar price point.

Regarding price, the Versa was generally competitive. However, considering overall value and reliability, the Honda Fit or Toyota Yaris might be considered slightly better alternatives, despite potentially costing a bit more upfront. If budget is the absolute primary concern and a well-maintained Versa can be found at a significantly lower price, it could still be a viable option. However, carefully inspect the CVT transmission and maintenance history before purchasing.

If reliability is paramount, the Toyota Yaris is the best bet. For a more fun driving experience and innovative features, the Honda Fit is preferable. If a balance of price and features is desired, and you can find one in good condition, then a Hyundai Accent could be considered.

Final Verdict: Is the 2007 Nissan Versa a Good Hatchback?

The 2007 Nissan Versa is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking basic, affordable transportation and prioritizing interior space. It's worth buying *used* if you find one in good condition with a clean maintenance history and a pre-purchase inspection reveals no major issues, *especially* concerning the CVT transmission. The SL trim offers a few more conveniences but isn't essential. If possible, a model with the manual transmission avoids potential CVT issues. Given its age, it's not a vehicle for those seeking modern technology or a refined driving experience. A well-maintained Versa can still provide years of reliable service as a basic commuter car, but it requires careful shopping and realistic expectations.

Was good while it lasted

I got the 1.5l 2005 axis autech version hatchback which had a nice body kit, facelift and leather interior. Had alloy wheels which made it look nice. Power was great for a small engine and the cvt was great for hills. However I got this car at 89,000km and only lasted to 120,000km before the CVT transmission broke while driving 100km/h around a rural area leaving me stranded 3 hrs from home in the middle of nowhere. Costed me 2000 nzd (1400usd) to replace the transmission. Note issues with CVT transmissions are common in this car before 2007 models. Do further research on transmission reliability of the year model you purchase. Otherwise a decent car. Get a manual or 4 speed auto if available to save yourself the hassle.
