Rating: 4.23
Based on 59 Owner Reviews
Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2009 Nissan Versa is a subcompact car known for its exceptional interior space for its class. Offered as a hatchback and sedan, the Versa debuted in 2007. Key trims included the base S, the mid-range SL, and sometimes a Convenience package. Its popularity stems from its affordability and fuel efficiency. Pricing in 2009 ranged roughly from $10,000 to $16,000, depending on the trim and options.
The Good

The 2009 Nissan Versa offers excellent fuel efficiency and a spacious interior, appealing to practical buyers. It's a budget-friendly option with decent reliability. The surprisingly roomy back seat provides comfort for passengers, a pleasant emotional benefit for families or those who frequently carpool. Its simple design also offers ease of use.

The Bad

The 2009 Nissan Versa's weaknesses include a somewhat bland driving experience and below-average handling. The interior materials are often criticized for being cheap and hard. Potential buyers should watch out for issues with the continuously variable transmission (CVT) in automatic models, as well as potential sensor malfunctions and rusting issues in colder climates.

What Problems Does the 2009 Nissan Versa Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2009 Nissan Versa include issues with the continuously variable transmission (CVT), particularly in models equipped with it. Some owners have reported premature CVT failure, requiring costly repairs or replacement. Other common issues involve the ignition system, including problems with the ignition coils and sensors, leading to rough idling or stalling.
There have been recalls related to airbag systems and potential fuel leakage issues in certain model years, so checking the vehicle's VIN for recall status is crucial. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around rust, especially in areas with road salt. The interior plastics are prone to wear and tear, and the suspension components may require attention over time.
While not specific to the 2009 model year alone, issues with the mass airflow sensor and oxygen sensors are commonly reported across this generation of Versa. The 2007 and 2008 model years had similar issues, so these should be carefully inspected regardless of the specific year. Regular maintenance and addressing minor issues promptly are crucial for maximizing the lifespan of the 2009 Versa.

How long will the 2009 Nissan Versa last?

A well-maintained 2009 Nissan Versa can realistically reach 200,000 miles or more. With average annual mileage of 12,000 to 15,000, this translates to 13-16 years of service. However, longevity heavily depends on consistent maintenance. The CVT transmission is a key long-term durability concern, requiring fluid changes according to the manufacturer's recommendations or even more frequently. Rust, particularly in areas with harsh winters, can significantly shorten the vehicle's lifespan. Neglecting maintenance or ignoring minor repairs will accelerate component wear and reduce overall reliability.

This car is the base mode. It is no frills whatsoever. Stick shift, manual locks / windows, no ABS or cruise control. It gets good gas mileage, parts are cheap, and it is a piece of cake to drive. Picks up well, handles the Wyoming mountain passes in summer with good agility, and it is fun to drive. Interior isn't uncomfortable, but I wouldn't say it is luxurious by any means.

This is a great first car. It's very affordable, without a lot of bells and whistles to distract young drivers. I don't find it comfortable, and there's not much storage space. The hatchback area holds groceries pretty well, but not a whole lot more. Definitely not putting a 7 year old's bike back there. For the money, though, I think this is a great car. Simple, easy to drive, easy to see out of, great gas mileage.

This is the second Nissan Versa I’ve owned and I love it. I love the style of the hatchback. It’s like a super mom car without the bulk of a van. It’s great on gas, I drive a lot with work and taking my boys out so gas mileage is awesome. Haven’t had any mechanical issues. Very reliable.

I have NEVER had to replace things in a car that I have had to replace in this car. I have replaced mufflers, but NEVER an entire Exhaust system. I have NEVER had to replace an AC coil on a car. That was $1100 dollars. And now I get a recall notice on the front coil springs. It is a stick shift, and I read to late about how it shifts poorly. I bought this because Datsuns were the best car I had ever had. I have never had more issues; and more expensive issues EVER!!!

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Nissan Versa offered limited built-in tech and entertainment features, especially in the base S trim. The SL trim offered slightly more, including an upgraded audio system with a CD player and sometimes an auxiliary input jack. There were no advanced driver-assistance features available.
Safety features included standard front airbags, side-impact airbags, and anti-lock brakes (ABS) were available on some trims, but not standard on all. Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) was also available.
Crash test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) varied, but generally, the Versa received acceptable scores for frontal offset crash tests. Side impact tests were rated marginal in some instances. NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) ratings also varied; some years and configurations achieved four or five stars for frontal crash protection, but side-impact ratings were often lower. Optional features, like ABS and side airbags, improved safety but weren't standard across all models. The focus was clearly on affordability, so advanced safety tech was largely absent.

2009 Nissan Versa Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Nissan Versa ranged from approximately $10,000 for the base S model to around $16,000 for a fully equipped SL. Current used market prices typically range from $3,000 to $7,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim. The Versa depreciated significantly due to its budget-oriented nature and higher production volumes. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, overall condition, any accident history, and the presence of optional features like ABS. Low demand for subcompact cars, combined with potential CVT transmission concerns, further contributes to the rapid depreciation.

2009 Nissan Versa Cost of Ownership

The 2009 Nissan Versa is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically low due to its classification as a subcompact car. Fuel economy is excellent, contributing to lower running costs. Routine maintenance is relatively inexpensive, with affordable parts and straightforward servicing. However, potential CVT transmission repairs can be costly. Overall, excluding major unforeseen issues like transmission failure, the Versa presents an affordable ownership experience.

How Does the 2009 Nissan Versa Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2009 Nissan Versa competes with the Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris, and Hyundai Accent. Compared to the Fit, the Versa offers a more spacious interior but lacks the Fit's superior handling and versatility. The Yaris is known for its bulletproof reliability, surpassing the Versa in that regard. The Hyundai Accent provides a comparable value proposition, often with a longer warranty when new.
In terms of performance, the Versa is generally less engaging to drive than the Fit or Yaris. Its features are basic compared to the competition, especially in lower trims. While the Versa's price point is attractive, potential CVT issues make the Yaris or Honda Fit better alternatives for long-term reliability. The Hyundai Accent offers a similar blend of affordability and features with a potentially better warranty.
Considering all factors, the Honda Fit and Toyota Yaris are recommended as potentially better alternatives due to their superior reliability and driving dynamics. The Hyundai Accent is a similar alternative with a focus on value.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Nissan Versa a Good Sedan?

The 2009 Nissan Versa is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a spacious and fuel-efficient subcompact car. It's worth buying *used* if the price is right and the vehicle has been well-maintained, with documented service history. Prioritize models with manual transmissions to avoid potential CVT issues. Carefully inspect the transmission for any signs of slippage or unusual noises. It's best suited for city driving and short commutes. However, consider alternatives like the Honda Fit or Toyota Yaris for greater long-term reliability and driving enjoyment. If opting for the Versa, ensure a thorough pre-purchase inspection.

Great Car

I have driven my 09 versa for several years with no problems. Have taken it on many trips. Aside from normal wear/tear things I have had to replace I have had no problems. Sometimes the engine light comes on and it always says its the cold start control or 02 sensor. Has never manifested into any issues. I would drive another newer versa in a heart beat. Mine has 148 K miles on it and is still going strong. Gets great gas mileage too
