2012 Nissan Versa Review: Cheap Compact Car Loaded With Serious Problems

Rating: 3.97
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2012 Nissan Versa debuted as Nissan's entry-level subcompact, known for its affordability and surprisingly spacious interior. Available as a sedan and hatchback, the 2012 Versa was part of the model's second generation. Key trims included the S, SL, and SV. Its popularity stemmed from its low price point and fuel efficiency, appealing to budget-conscious buyers. Pricing typically ranged from $10,990 to $15,990 when new.
The Good

The 2012 Nissan Versa boasts excellent fuel efficiency, appealing to practical buyers seeking to save money at the pump. Its spacious interior provides unexpected comfort for its class. While not a performance vehicle, it's generally considered reliable. The low price point delivers exceptional value, making it attractive for budget-conscious individuals. The Versa's simplicity can also appeal to those seeking a no-frills, dependable car.

The Bad

The 2012 Nissan Versa suffers from sluggish acceleration, particularly with the base engine. The interior materials are often criticized for being low-quality. The handling can feel unrefined compared to rivals. Potential buyers should watch out for CVT transmission issues, which have been reported in some cases. Rust can be a concern in colder climates. The base model lacks many desirable features.

What Problems Does the 2012 Nissan Versa Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2012 Nissan Versa often revolve around the CVT transmission. Some owners have reported issues such as slipping, jerking, or complete failure, particularly at higher mileage. These issues can be costly to repair. Another common complaint involves the air conditioning system, with some owners reporting compressor failures or weak cooling performance. Rust can also be a concern, especially in areas with harsh winters where road salt is used. Checking the undercarriage and lower body panels for rust is recommended. Some owners have also reported issues with the ignition system. Recalls for the 2012 Versa have included issues related to fuel leaks and potential fire hazards. It's important to check the vehicle's VIN with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to determine if any recalls apply. Long-term reliability concerns often center on the CVT transmission and the overall durability of interior components. Proper maintenance, including regular fluid changes, can help mitigate some of these issues.

How long will the 2012 Nissan Versa last?

With consistent maintenance, a 2012 Nissan Versa can potentially reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. However, longevity heavily depends on how well the car was maintained and driven. Regular oil changes, transmission fluid services (especially for CVT models), and addressing minor issues promptly are crucial. Long-term durability weaknesses often include the CVT transmission, which can experience problems as mileage increases. Suspension components, such as struts and bushings, may also require replacement over time. Rust, particularly in northern climates, can shorten the vehicle's lifespan. Overall, diligent maintenance is key to maximizing the 2012 Versa's years of service.
Positive Owner Reviews
Vanessa
I have never had a problem with my Nissan versa hatchback. Great little car with plenty of room. It is a 2012 67,000 miles and it still has the brand new smell. It has had two recalls took it to my local dealership fix the recalls but no problems.

This is by far the most dependable car I have owned. I drive to Northern VA everyday no matter the weather and it has never let me down.
LARRY
Nissan Versa is a a fabulous car, incredible gas mileage, very roomy interior and much faster than anticipated. Good seating, firm and contoured for the body. Perfect car for the location and daily chores.
Negative Owner Reviews
Lusa Frades
The worst car I ever bought. The only Japanese car that is built so cheap and now since so bought it used, the transmission needs to be replaced a Nissan wants $8000 todo it.I don’t have the money, so I have to junk it. Always get a Toyota, don’t waste a dime on this junk of junk.
So fed up
Just after I bought it the drivers seat got stuck and won't move. The motor light came on. Had a transmission recall, before I got the car. I couldn't het it fixed. I still have 2.5 years of payments...hope the car lasts that long. I'm terrified to go anywhere! Never again!
Zanark
The title says it all. I was on a trip to another state, and the RPMs would fly up by the car wouldn't accelerate. Long story short and $3000 later, the transmission FAILED 1/4th of the way through the trip and to this day, I'm still dealing with the credit card debt. Beyond that, the car ran like garbage, even after I had the transmission replaced. No "get up and go" from that car no matter what I did - my 02' Hyundai Elantra had twice the horsepower! Then I get contacted by a lawyer 2 months later as they formed a CLASS ACTION lawsuit because this has been happening in innumerable(that's right, not just the versa, not just the 2012's) Nissan vehicles with these experimental parts/engineering (at the risk and cost of consumers) and if you've read to this point, you can guess that Nissan weaseled out of that too! At this point, Nissan couldn't pay me to drive one of their cars. Do NOT support any vehicle that has this experimental crap in it, especially if it's from Nissan!!!

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 Nissan Versa offered a relatively basic suite of built-in tech and entertainment features, particularly in the base S trim. Standard features typically included a basic AM/FM radio with a CD player and auxiliary input. Higher trims, such as the SV and SL, might include features like Bluetooth connectivity, an iPod interface, and upgraded audio systems. Driver-assistance features were minimal, with no advanced technologies like blind-spot monitoring or lane departure warning available. Safety features included standard front and side airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and electronic stability control. Optional features varied by trim and could include keyless entry, fog lights, and alloy wheels. Crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) should be consulted for specific safety performance. Generally, the 2012 Versa received acceptable but not outstanding safety scores. The lack of advanced driver-assistance features is a notable drawback compared to newer vehicles. The available tech and entertainment were adequate for its time but are now considered dated by modern standards. Owners looking for more advanced features will likely need to consider aftermarket upgrades or newer vehicles.

2012 Nissan Versa Prices and Market Value

The 2012 Nissan Versa had a starting price around $10,990 when new, with higher trims reaching up to $15,990. Current used market prices vary greatly depending on condition, mileage, and location, but typically range from $3,000 to $7,000. The Versa depreciated significantly due to its entry-level status and relatively basic features. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition (especially rust), maintenance history, and trim level. Models with higher mileage or signs of neglect will fetch lower prices. The presence of desirable features like Bluetooth or alloy wheels can slightly improve resale value. Overall, the Versa experiences steeper depreciation compared to some of its competitors.

2012 Nissan Versa Cost of Ownership

The 2012 Nissan Versa is generally considered economical to own. Insurance costs are typically low due to its affordability and safety record. Fuel efficiency is a major advantage, resulting in lower fuel costs. Routine maintenance, such as oil changes and tire rotations, is relatively inexpensive. However, potential CVT transmission repairs can be costly. Overall, the Versa's low purchase price and good fuel economy contribute to its affordability, but budgeting for potential CVT issues is advisable. Long-term ownership costs are generally lower than average for its class.

2012 Nissan Versa Insurance

Insurance for a 2012 Nissan Versa is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 Nissan Versa Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2012 Nissan Versa competed with vehicles like the Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris, Ford Fiesta, and Hyundai Accent. In terms of performance, the Versa lagged behind the Fit and Fiesta, which offered more engaging driving experiences. The Yaris and Accent provided similar, albeit slightly better, performance. Feature-wise, the Versa often trailed behind, particularly in lower trims. The Fit and Accent offered more available technology and convenience features. Reliability is a mixed bag; while the Versa can be dependable, the CVT transmission is a potential weak point, unlike the more reliable powertrains in the Toyota Yaris. The Versa's main advantage was its price. It consistently undercut most of its rivals, making it a compelling option for budget-conscious buyers. However, the Honda Fit offered better versatility and resale value. The Hyundai Accent provided a better warranty and more modern styling. The Ford Fiesta offered a sportier driving experience. For buyers prioritizing budget above all else, the Versa is a reasonable choice. However, considering alternatives like the Honda Fit (for versatility and reliability) or the Hyundai Accent (for value and features) might be worthwhile if the budget allows.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Nissan Versa a Good Sedan?

The 2012 Nissan Versa is ideal for budget-minded buyers seeking a reliable, fuel-efficient, and spacious subcompact car. It's a practical choice for those who prioritize affordability over performance or advanced features. Whether it's worth buying depends on the condition and price of the used model. A well-maintained Versa with a documented service history, particularly regarding CVT maintenance, can be a good value. Consider higher trims (SV or SL) for better features. However, if the budget allows, exploring alternatives like the Honda Fit or Hyundai Accent might provide a more well-rounded ownership experience. A pre-purchase inspection is highly recommended, especially focusing on the CVT transmission.

I own the most bear bones version and it works like a charm, with the manual 30mpg is easily achievable. Steering at low speeds feels like you are the car. Pedals are responsive and the suspension can handle just about anything. Highly recommended for a cheap daily.

The worst car I ever bought.

Great smooth ride and good gas mileage, haven't had any issues with this car at all. Long road trips in the car are a little tough on the back

The little car that could and did!

We bought a Special Edition Model new. The car has been very reliable. Of course we maintain it @82K on the clock. We are lucky, our model does NOT hav the CVT tranny. That Tranny has lots of issues and requires a special battery. Peppy and gas mileage is OK. Would buy again.

Puzzled but glad I can still get around. on December 27, 2022

Headache

Code 0705 has many mechanics puzzled...they can't figure why when I step on brake the PRNDL light goes out & car starts to jerk....I have to put car in P when I come to red light or stop sign. It runs but it's a nuisance.

Great little car for a student. In college or h/s.

I have never had a problem with my Nissan versa hatchback. Great little car with plenty of room. It is a 2012 67,000 miles and it still has the brand new smell. It has had two recalls took it to my local dealership fix the recalls but no problems.

So fed up on April 9, 2021

Worst car I have ever owned.

Just after I bought it the drivers seat got stuck and won't move. The motor light came on. Had a transmission recall, before I got the car. I couldn't het it fixed. I still have 2.5 years of payments...hope the car lasts that long. I'm terrified to go anywhere! Never again!

DO NOT EVER GET A NISSAN WITH A CVT!!!

Do NOT support any vehicle that has this experimental crap in it, especially if it's from Nissan!!!

functional and dependable

So far it's okay...gas mileage is fair to good around the city depending on factors like the road and the route taken. I bought the rear trunk cover from Amazon and fits perfect. Takes corners well and feels good scooting to the few places we can travel to right now. Overall, a good deal for me.
