The 2011 Rolls-Royce Ghost, introduced as a "smaller" and more driver-focused alternative to the Phantom, boasts a sedan body style. Produced from 2009 (as a 2010 model) onward, the Ghost's key trims remained relatively consistent. New pricing started around $250,000. Its appeal stems from its blend of unparalleled luxury, handcrafted details, and a powerful engine, offering a more accessible Rolls-Royce experience without sacrificing prestige. It stands out due to its understated elegance compared to the Phantom.
The Good

The 2011 Rolls-Royce Ghost delivers exceptional performance with its powerful V12 engine. Comfort is paramount, thanks to its luxurious interior and smooth ride. The design exudes timeless elegance, appealing emotionally. Practically, while not highly efficient, its proven engineering offers reasonable reliability for its class and maintains strong resale value relative to other ultra-luxury cars.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2011 Rolls-Royce Ghost include its complex air suspension system, which can be expensive to repair. Electronic gremlins, though infrequent, can occur. High maintenance costs and expensive replacement parts are also factors to consider. Watch out for proper servicing records, as neglect can lead to significant issues down the line.

What Problems Does the 2011 Rolls-Royce Ghost Have?

While the 2011 Rolls-Royce Ghost is generally considered a reliable vehicle for its class, some frequently reported problems and long-term reliability concerns include issues with the air suspension system. This complex system can be prone to leaks and component failures, leading to expensive repairs. Electrical gremlins, though not widespread, have been reported, affecting systems such as the infotainment, power windows, and lighting.

Some owners have reported issues with the early iterations of the infotainment system, including navigation and audio glitches. Battery drain can also be a concern if the vehicle is not driven regularly.

Recalls for the 2011 Ghost have been relatively limited, but it's essential to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) database for any specific recalls related to the vehicle's VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). Due to the high cost of parts and labor, maintenance and repairs can be significantly more expensive than for mainstream vehicles. Long-term reliability hinges heavily on consistent and proper maintenance. Neglecting scheduled servicing can lead to accelerated wear and tear on various components, potentially resulting in costly repairs. Check service history carefully before purchase. There are no specific year-related issues known to be prevalent on the 2011 model.

How long will the 2011 Rolls-Royce Ghost last?

Given its ultra-luxury positioning, the 2011 Rolls-Royce Ghost often sees lower average annual mileage than typical cars. Expect to find examples with mileage ranging from 30,000 to 80,000 miles, depending on usage. With meticulous maintenance, a Ghost can provide over a decade of service. However, its complex systems, particularly the air suspension and electronics, can become weaknesses over time. Regular servicing, including fluid changes and inspections, is crucial for long-term durability. Neglect significantly shortens its lifespan and increases the risk of expensive repairs. The leather and wood trim tend to hold up well with proper care.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2011 Rolls-Royce Ghost boasts a range of built-in tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. Standard tech includes a sophisticated infotainment system with navigation, a premium audio system (often bespoke), Bluetooth connectivity, and voice control. Entertainment features extend to optional rear-seat entertainment systems with screens and individual controls, allowing passengers to enjoy movies or other media. Driver-assistance features, while not as advanced as modern systems, include parking sensors, a rearview camera, and adaptive cruise control (optional).

Safety features include anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control, multiple airbags (front, side, and curtain), and automatic headlights. Optional safety enhancements include lane departure warning and night vision. While the 2011 Rolls-Royce Ghost was never specifically crash-tested by organizations like NHTSA or IIHS, its robust construction, comprehensive safety features, and advanced driver-assistance systems aim to provide a high level of occupant protection. The vehicle prioritizes safety through structural engineering and preventative technologies rather than relying solely on crash test results. Rolls-Royce typically invests heavily in engineering for occupant safety, exceeding standard requirements.

2011 Rolls-Royce Ghost Prices and Market Value

The 2011 Rolls-Royce Ghost had a starting price around $250,000 when new. Currently, used market prices typically range from $80,000 to $130,000+, depending on condition, mileage, and options. Depreciation is significant but slower compared to other luxury cars. Factors affecting resale value include: service history (well-maintained examples command higher prices), mileage (lower mileage is preferable), color (classic and desirable colors hold value better), options (desirable options enhance value), and overall condition. The Rolls-Royce name and handcrafted quality help maintain relatively strong resale values.

2011 Rolls-Royce Ghost Cost of Ownership

Owning a 2011 Rolls-Royce Ghost is undeniably costly. Insurance premiums are high due to the vehicle's value and repair costs. Fuel economy is poor, resulting in significant fuel expenses. Maintenance and repairs are expensive, requiring specialized technicians and costly parts. Long-term ownership costs are substantially higher than those of mainstream vehicles. The Ghost is not economical to own; it's a luxury reserved for those who prioritize prestige and comfort over practicality.

2011 Rolls-Royce Ghost Insurance

Insurance for a 2011 Rolls-Royce Ghost is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2011 Rolls-Royce Ghost Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2011 Rolls-Royce Ghost competes with vehicles like the Bentley Continental Flying Spur, Mercedes-Maybach S-Class (though the Maybach wasn't available under that badge in 2011, S-Class options existed), and high-end versions of the BMW 7 Series and Audi A8. In terms of performance, the Ghost offers comparable power to the Bentley but prioritizes smooth delivery over outright sportiness. Features are broadly similar, with all offering top-tier luxury and customization. Reliability is a mixed bag; while the Ghost and Bentley can be prone to expensive repairs, the German alternatives are generally more reliable. Price-wise, the Ghost is positioned at the higher end of the spectrum.

Alternatives: The Bentley Continental Flying Spur offers a sportier driving experience. A well-optioned BMW 7 Series provides similar levels of technology and comfort at a significantly lower price point but lacks the prestige. A 2011-era Maybach-equipped S-Class (though badged only as a Mercedes S-Class with specific Maybach options at the time) could be found, though not officially sold as a Maybach model. The Ghost is a strong choice for those prioritizing the Rolls-Royce brand and its unique blend of luxury and craftsmanship. However, practical buyers may find better value and reliability elsewhere.

Final Verdict: Is the 2011 Rolls-Royce Ghost a Good Sedan?

The 2011 Rolls-Royce Ghost is ideal for discerning buyers seeking unparalleled luxury, prestige, and a smooth driving experience. It's worth buying *used* for those who appreciate the brand but want to avoid the steep initial depreciation. Condition and service history are paramount; only consider examples with documented maintenance. A pre-purchase inspection by a Rolls-Royce specialist is highly recommended. The standard wheelbase offers a better driving experience, while the LWB prioritizes rear passenger comfort. If you are aware of the high running costs and potential for expensive repairs and prioritize luxury above all else, then a well-maintained 2011 Ghost can be a worthwhile purchase.

Simply gorgeous

This review compares my two cars. I purchased a new 2006 Bentley Continental GT which now has about 23,000 miles. I bought the used 2011 Ghost which had about 3500 miles in May, 2013. It now has about 7500 miles. First, they are beautiful but very different. The fit and finish are comparable. The Bentley has been reliable over the nine years, but, as expected, maintenance is expensive. The Ghost is still under warranty, but I also expect maintenance to be the same cost as the Bentley. But, that is not a criticism, but simply a fact. The wood trim in both is exceptional, but the leather in the Bentley is superior. Sadly, the leather in the Ghost looks like a BMW. The pebbled leather is not even close to the beautiful hides in the Bentley. The ride on the Bentley is composed but firmer than the Ghost. But is that is expected in a car that can reach 196 MPH. The Ghost rides like you would expect. While they are expensive as compared to other cars, they are worth every penny. I plan to own both forever.
