The 2018 Volvo S90 is a mid-size luxury sedan, representing Volvo's commitment to Scandinavian design and advanced safety features. It's part of the second generation S90, launched in 2017. Key trims include Momentum, Inscription, and R-Design. Known for its elegant styling, comfortable interior, and focus on safety, the 2018 S90 stood out by offering a distinctive alternative to the German luxury brands. The pricing range when new started from around $47,000. Its popularity stems from its luxurious features at a competitive price point.
The Good

The 2018 Volvo S90 offers a compelling blend of advantages. Its comfortable ride and elegant design appeal to emotional buyers. Practical buyers will appreciate its advanced safety features, reasonable fuel efficiency (especially with the T8 hybrid), and competitive value within the luxury sedan segment. While not a sports car, the performance is adequate and the reliability is generally good.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2018 Volvo S90 include its somewhat complex infotainment system, which some users find unintuitive. The rear seat legroom, while adequate, isn't class-leading. Also, be mindful of potential electrical issues, particularly with the sensor systems. Some owners have reported issues with the air suspension (if equipped) and the complicated hybrid system in the T8 models. Regular maintenance is crucial.

What Problems Does the 2018 Volvo S90 Have?

The 2018 Volvo S90, while generally reliable, has exhibited some frequently reported problems. A common concern revolves around the Sensus infotainment system. Many users have reported glitches, slow response times, and connectivity issues with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Electrical issues, particularly related to sensors and driver-assistance systems, have also been reported. Some owners have encountered problems with the air suspension system (if equipped), leading to costly repairs.
The T8 plug-in hybrid models have their own set of potential issues. The complex hybrid system can sometimes experience malfunctions, and battery life/range degradation is a potential long-term concern. Recalls have been issued for various issues, including problems with the fuel line, braking system, and airbags. It's essential to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls before purchasing.
Long-term reliability concerns generally revolve around the longevity of the infotainment system and the potential for expensive repairs to the air suspension or hybrid system. Regular maintenance, following Volvo's recommended service schedule, is crucial for mitigating these risks. Pre-purchase inspections by a qualified mechanic familiar with Volvo vehicles are highly recommended.

How long will the 2018 Volvo S90 last?

With proper maintenance, the 2018 Volvo S90 can reasonably be expected to provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. Regular oil changes, timely replacement of wear items (brakes, tires), and adherence to the recommended service schedule are critical. Long-term durability can be affected by the complexity of the vehicle's systems. The infotainment system's functionality may degrade over time, and repairs to the air suspension or hybrid powertrain can be costly. Careful attention to preventative maintenance can significantly extend the lifespan and reduce the risk of major issues.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2018 Volvo S90 boasts a comprehensive suite of built-in tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. The centerpiece is the Volvo Sensus infotainment system, featuring a 9-inch touchscreen that controls navigation, audio, climate, and vehicle settings. It includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Standard entertainment features include a premium audio system.
Standard driver-assistance features are extensive, including lane keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, and a rearview camera. Optional features include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with Pilot Assist (Volvo's semi-autonomous driving system), and a 360-degree surround-view camera.
Safety is a Volvo hallmark. The 2018 S90 received excellent crash-test ratings from both the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). The IIHS named it a Top Safety Pick+. These ratings reflect the S90's robust structural design and advanced safety technologies, making it a very safe vehicle for occupants. The Pilot Assist system, while not fully autonomous, helps reduce driver fatigue on long journeys.

2018 Volvo S90 Prices and Market Value

The 2018 Volvo S90 had a starting MSRP of around $47,000 when new. Current used market prices typically range from $20,000 to $35,000, depending on the trim level, mileage, and condition. The S90 has experienced typical depreciation for a luxury sedan. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, service history, and trim level. T8 models may hold slightly better value due to their fuel efficiency and performance. The availability of specific features (like the Bowers & Wilkins sound system) can also influence resale price. Colors considered desirable also retain value better.

2018 Volvo S90 Cost of Ownership

Long-term ownership costs for the 2018 Volvo S90 can be moderate to high. Insurance premiums are typically higher than average due to its luxury status and advanced safety features. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially for the T5 and T8 models. Maintenance can be more expensive than non-luxury vehicles, particularly for specialized services like air suspension or hybrid system repairs. Repair costs can also be high due to the complexity of the car and the potential need for specialized parts. Overall, it's not the most economical luxury sedan to own.

Insurance for a 2018 Volvo S90 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2018 Volvo S90 Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2018 Volvo S90 competes with other mid-size luxury sedans like the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6, and Lexus GS. In terms of performance, the S90's T6 and T8 engines offer competitive power, though the BMW and Mercedes often provide a more engaging driving experience. The S90 excels in safety features, often including more standard features than its rivals. Its infotainment system, while feature-rich, is less intuitive than those offered by Audi or BMW.
Reliability is generally good, but the German rivals have a slightly better track record. The S90's pricing is often more competitive than the German brands, offering more features for the money. In terms of comfort and interior design, the S90 stands out with its Scandinavian aesthetic.
Alternatives to consider include the Lexus ES for its exceptional reliability and comfort, or the Acura TLX for a sportier driving experience at a similar price point. If performance is a top priority, the BMW 5 Series or Mercedes-Benz E-Class might be better choices, but expect to pay more. The Audi A6 offers a good balance of performance, features, and technology.

Final Verdict: Is the 2018 Volvo S90 a Good Sedan?

The 2018 Volvo S90 is ideal for buyers who prioritize safety, comfort, and elegant design over outright performance. It's a good choice for those seeking a luxury sedan with a distinctive Scandinavian flair. Whether it's worth buying depends on individual needs and priorities. A used 2018 S90 can offer excellent value, especially if well-maintained and with a clean service history. Opting for a T6 or T8 model provides more performance. However, buyers should be aware of potential infotainment system issues and potential repair costs, especially for the air suspension or hybrid components. A pre-purchase inspection is highly recommended to avoid surprises.

Nice car but be careful.

Before buying used, have an independent mechanic check it over. I had a bad experience with the dealer with several expensive issues shortly after my purchase. Brakes, alignment/tires, shock and steering wheel electronics (voice command, radio). The steering wheel electronics problem is common.

Love this car

I bought 2018 s90 pre owned Volvo about 2wks ago. Was going to buy a Cad they couldn't get the air-condition to work and I live in Fl. so they brought the Volvo. I've heard they are good but never thought of buying one. We drove it and bought it. I can't believe the room it has. No way I can list all the features it has. I have spent hrs watching YouTube to learn how everything works and I still don't know all.

The Build Quality is Lacking

I purchased my 2018 Volvo S90 in June of 2018 and for 3 years straight, when it rained, water entered the car in the passenger footwell. I brought it to the dealer and they were unable to fix the issue after three years. I contacted Volvo corporate and they kept sending me back to the dealer.

Most Reliable and Beautiful Car I've owned.

I LOVE MY S90. I bought it used at Carmax (1 yo) and have had it now for 2 years. The car is reliable, beautiful, and wearing well. The technology is still cutting edge even a few years after it was released. Worth every penny.

So sleek and roomy

i l9ve the looks and space of this car. The T5 momentum base model with 19 inch momentum package wheels looks amazing. The base stereo is just okay, and tge JBL upgrade for 900 bucks is pretty great. It is definitely not the sports car I came from, but it more than holds its own on back roads.
