The Good
The 2017 Volvo S90 offers a blend of performance and comfort. Its powerful engines provide ample acceleration, while the suspension delivers a smooth ride. The elegant Scandinavian design appeals emotionally, while its focus on safety and fuel efficiency (for the segment) provides practical value. Its reliability reputation, although mixed, is generally good, adding to its appeal.
The Bad
Some common issues to watch out for in the 2017 Volvo S90 include potential infotainment system glitches, specifically the Sensus Connect system. Also, be mindful of potential air suspension issues on equipped models. Reliability can be inconsistent, and some owners have reported electrical problems. What Problems Does the 2017 Volvo S90 Have?
Recalls for the 2017 S90 have addressed issues like potential fuel leakage, which could increase the risk of a fire, and problems with the seat belt pretensioners. It's essential to check the VIN with the NHTSA database to see if any recalls are outstanding for a specific vehicle.
Long-term reliability can be a concern. While Volvo has a reputation for safety, the complex electronics and turbocharged engines can lead to maintenance needs as the car ages. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to any warning signs are crucial for preserving the S90's reliability. Some owners have reported that later model years (2018+) had some of these issues resolved through software updates or design revisions, but it is important to carefully inspect any year S90 before purchasing.
How long will the 2017 Volvo S90 last?
Long-term durability weaknesses often involve the infotainment system and electrical components. The turbocharged engines, while powerful, require diligent maintenance to prevent issues like oil leaks or turbocharger failure. Air suspension systems, if equipped, are also potential long-term maintenance items.
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Standard driver-assistance features include lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control (Pilot Assist). Pilot Assist is a semi-autonomous driving system that can assist with steering, acceleration, and braking on well-marked highways. Optional features included blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and park assist.
Safety is a Volvo hallmark. The 2017 S90 received top safety ratings from both the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). It earned a 5-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA and was an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ when equipped with optional features like the Vision Package (which included blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert). These ratings reflect the S90's strong performance in crash tests and its comprehensive suite of safety technologies.

2017 Volvo S90 Prices and Market Value
The S90 has experienced significant depreciation, typical for luxury sedans. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, service history, and trim level. Models with lower mileage, a clean accident record, and desirable options like the Bowers & Wilkins sound system or advanced safety features tend to command higher prices. Color also plays a role; more popular colors generally hold their value better.

How Does the 2017 Volvo S90 Compare to Other Sedan?
Reliability is where the S90 lags behind some competitors, particularly the Lexus GS, which has a strong reputation for dependability. The BMW and Mercedes also tend to have higher repair costs. In terms of price, the S90 can be slightly more affordable than some of its German counterparts on the used market.
Alternatives to consider include the Lexus GS for superior reliability, the BMW 5 Series for a sportier driving experience, or the Acura TLX for a balance of luxury and value. The Genesis G80 is another option, offering similar levels of luxury at a competitive price. The choice depends on individual priorities, with the S90 appealing to buyers who value Scandinavian design, safety, and a comfortable ride.

Final Verdict: Is the 2017 Volvo S90 a Good Sedan?
Specific trims like the Inscription, with its added luxury features, are particularly appealing. Consider models with comprehensive service records and ensure any outstanding recalls have been addressed. If infotainment glitches are a major concern, research newer Volvo models, or alternatives with more reliable systems may be preferable.

I brought my vehicle used almost 4 years ago.I brought my vehicle used almost 4 years ago. I was super excited as this was my first time buying a Volvo, I never thought I would. From the moment I was in the process of buying the car, I get people curious about the vehicle and complimenting it. Unfortunately, the thrill hasn't lasted long. I too have had vibration/rattling issues traveling above 55mph. The dashboard along the windshield has receded and looks terrible. Additionally, there is an apparent known defect with the radiator hoses, one on the bottom in particular that sits right next to the engine block and is known to wear and leak. The repair was > $1000 and I had another up top burst about 6 months later. I've had other luxury brands like BMW and Range Rover and was hoping this would provide a more reliable experience. I was wrong and disappointed. Additionally, the car does not hold its value well, especially after I've purchased the T5 Inscription trim, very disappointing.

Great from day 1I ordered my 2017 T6 S90 Inscription in magic blue from factory. Love it. 6 years on it's as great as first day. Interior holds up well. Exterior paint has not fade. Drives smoothly! Gorgeous

Good kind of differentI really like the look of my S90. It's a different brand that I would normally think of when I think of luxury sedans. However, once I sat in the inscription model it felt expensive. I got a deal buying it used for 30K. Loaded with safety features and decked out with the Bowers & Wilkins sound system it's ready. I really like the sound of the B&W system and the look is amazing.

S90 is a head-turning sweet rideCan’t imagine a car doing more to make driving fun and comfortable. The T6 engine is quick and smooth. AWD is very helpful on snowy Indiana winter roads. The technology is just right. Been driving Volvos since 1984. Great, great car.

Software Issues with the Vehicle from Day OneI have always driven Japanese and German luxury sports sedans , then I decided to purchase a used s90 Inscription fully loaded with everything except the Polestar Optimization .The interior quality , exterior styling ,plethora of fun driving and safety features and mechanical reliability has been stellar and impressive and a great value for a European/Chinese luxury sedan. However since the vehicle is managed by software, I have had a plethora of software driven issues from air bag and engine light alerts that have been due to lost communication with central electrical module, control BUS signal missing ,etc and have had to take the vehicle in for service multiple times for sofware updates luckily the vehicle is still under warranty and also purchased an extended warranty .The vehicle also has a lot do road noise regardless of the tires you use. If buying used, l wisely suggest buying a Certified Preowned Volvo and or an extended warranty to cover these malfunctioning software issues .This vehicle is a fun and fast car to drive but Volvo still has a lot of work to do catch to the driving experience of the Lexus GS350 and Audi A6.

S90 is the Flagship of the FleetBest VOLVO I've ever owned. Been driving the S Series sedans for years, but this is by far the best. Buy one of these and you won't be disappointed.

The worst Volvo I’ve ever owned.2017 Volvo S90 inscription. I have had nothing but problems with this car for three years. The car has been to the shop constantly the trunk lid keeps malfunctioning and doesn’t operate properly. Several vibrations that they can’t figure out where it’s coming over 60mph, valve rattling in the engine that the dealer doesn’t or can’t fix. I filed a complaint after complaint with multiple people at Volvo headquarters in New Jersey and they are absolutely useless! The customer service is horrible! I’ve even taken it to other dealers and they can’t seem to fix the problem. This car is just a disaster! I’m seriously thinking about taking the loss and getting rid of it! I wish I would’ve kept my S 80 it was such a beautiful and reliable car. I have had 3 Volvo’s and this is the last. I’m Truly disappointed!
