What Problems Does the 2019 Volvo S90 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2019 Volvo S90 often revolve around the Sensus infotainment system. Users have reported slow response times, software glitches, and issues with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity. Some owners have also experienced electrical problems, including issues with the battery, sensors, and electronic control units. Air suspension problems have been noted in some models equipped with this feature, leading to costly repairs.

Recalls for the 2019 S90 have included issues related to the fuel line, potentially causing fuel leaks and increasing the risk of fire. Other recalls have addressed concerns with the automatic emergency braking system and the seat belt pretensioners. Owners should check the NHTSA website for the most up-to-date recall information and ensure that any outstanding recalls are addressed.

Long-term reliability can be a concern. While Volvo has improved its reliability ratings in recent years, some owners still report issues with the electrical system and the complex turbocharged and supercharged engines. Regular maintenance and adherence to the recommended service schedule are crucial for maximizing the lifespan of the vehicle. Pre-purchase inspections by a qualified mechanic are advised, especially when considering a used model.

How long will the 2019 Volvo S90 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2019 Volvo S90 can realistically provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. Key to longevity is adherence to the recommended maintenance schedule, including regular oil changes, fluid checks, and timely replacement of wear items. Long-term durability can be affected by the complexity of the engine and electrical systems. Weaknesses that may emerge over time include increased susceptibility to electrical glitches, potential issues with the air suspension (if equipped), and wear on the turbocharger/supercharger components. Proper care and preventative maintenance are crucial for maximizing the lifespan and minimizing potential repair costs.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2019 Volvo S90 is packed with technology, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. Standard features include the Sensus Connect infotainment system with a 9-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, and a premium audio system. Optional features include a Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system, navigation, and a head-up display.

Driver-assistance features include standard lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic emergency braking (City Safety). Pilot Assist, Volvo's semi-autonomous driving system, is also standard, providing steering, acceleration, and braking assistance on well-marked roads. Adaptive cruise control is also available.

Safety is a Volvo hallmark. The 2019 S90 earned excellent crash-test ratings from both the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). It received a 5-star overall safety rating from NHTSA and was named an IIHS Top Safety Pick+.

Key safety features include multiple airbags, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, and a whiplash protection system. The S90's robust safety cage and advanced driver-assistance systems contribute to its excellent safety performance.

2019 Volvo S90 Prices and Market Value

The 2019 Volvo S90 had a starting MSRP of around $49,000 when new, with higher trims reaching upwards of $60,000. Current used market prices range from approximately $25,000 to $40,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The S90 experiences moderate depreciation, typical for luxury sedans. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, maintenance history, and trim level. Models with lower mileage, a clean title, and complete maintenance records tend to command higher prices. The popularity of specific colors and option packages can also influence resale value. The T8 plug-in hybrid model may hold its value slightly better due to its fuel efficiency.

2019 Volvo S90 Cost of Ownership

The 2019 Volvo S90's insurance costs are moderate, comparable to other luxury sedans. Fuel costs depend on the engine choice, with the T8 plug-in hybrid offering the best fuel economy. Maintenance costs can be higher than average due to the complexity of the vehicle and the potential for electrical issues. Repairs can also be expensive, especially for the air suspension or Sensus infotainment system. Overall, the S90 is not the most economical luxury sedan to own, with long-term ownership costs potentially exceeding those of some competitors.

2019 Volvo S90 Insurance

Insurance for a 2019 Volvo S90 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2019 Volvo S90 Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2019 Volvo S90 competes with luxury sedans like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5 Series, Audi A6, and Lexus ES. In terms of performance, the S90 offers competitive power but may not be as sporty as the BMW 5 Series. Feature-wise, the S90 is well-equipped, offering comparable technology to its rivals. However, its Sensus infotainment system isn't as user-friendly as those found in the Mercedes-Benz and Audi. Reliability is where the S90 falls short compared to the Lexus ES, which has a stellar reputation for dependability. Price-wise, the S90 is generally more affordable than the German competitors but slightly more expensive than the Lexus ES.

Alternatives to the 2019 Volvo S90 include:
  • Lexus ES: Offers superior reliability and a comfortable ride at a similar price point.
  • BMW 5 Series: Provides a more engaging driving experience and a wider range of engine options.
  • Mercedes-Benz E-Class: Boasts a more luxurious interior and a more refined infotainment system.

A similar alternative would be the Acura TLX, offering a balance of luxury and reliability. The S90's unique styling and focus on safety make it a compelling choice, but potential buyers should weigh its weaknesses against its strengths.

Final Verdict: Is the 2019 Volvo S90 a Good Sedan?

The 2019 Volvo S90 is ideal for buyers who prioritize safety, comfort, and Scandinavian design. It's a good choice for those who appreciate a luxurious interior and a smooth ride. Whether it's worth buying depends on individual needs and priorities. Given the potential reliability concerns and higher maintenance costs, a used 2019 S90 is best considered with a thorough pre-purchase inspection. Opting for a lower-mileage example with a comprehensive service history is recommended. The Inscription trim offers the most luxurious features, while the T8 plug-in hybrid provides the best fuel economy. If reliability is a top concern, other alternatives like the Lexus ES might be a better fit.

As long as I am able, I will never purchase another brand

As long as I am able, I will never purchase another brand of car for myself!!! I'm a 4x owner and by just sitting in one, I loose my breath every time.. I left Mercedes in a parking lot and made a trade in for my 1st in 1995.... Oh might I add, I was only in my early 20's... I've been sold every since... Blessings to Volvo and all Volvo owners!!!

First Volvo I have purchased

This car is exceptional. Rides fantastic and is aesthetically appealing. Love all the technology. Fun to drive. Would recommend this car to anyone. Only thing I would change is to put the gas tank on the driver's side of the car.

We love Volvo's!

We've only owned this particular vehicle for a couple days, but are blown away by the car. It's comfortable, quiet and has about every car feature we could ever want.

Best car for your money

Best looking and performing car I’ve purchased in decades. Love the quality of the interior, performance of the supercharge/turbo-charge 4 cylinder engine (outstanding MPG). Extremely comfortable during long drives.

Good test drive.

The car has outstanding rear leg room; Rides smooth and is powerful enough, not a real performance car. All the technology needed up front and in the rear (for passengers). A lot of safety features standard!

Volvo S90 T6 Inscription catches the eye

The cooling seats work great. The automatic trunk opener is a huge help. The car drives and responds beautifully and it’s clean, crisp lines make the car attractive.

My first sedan. Always had pick-ups or SUVs.

I needed a car that would meet the needs of my disabled family. They needed more room than normal to get in and out of the car. This involved using wheelchairs and walkers, which other sedans could not accommodate. Needed to be able to lower the seats to very low. This is the only sedan that would do that. Love the safety and "steel cage" around us.
