Based on 34 Owner Reviews
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2006 GMC Envoy is a mid-size SUV, part of the Envoy's second generation (2002-2009). It features a traditional body-on-frame construction. Key trims included the SLE, SLT, and Denali. Known for its comfortable ride and powerful engine options, the Envoy offered a blend of truck-like capability and passenger comfort. The pricing range when new varied depending on the trim and options, but typically fell between $30,000 and $40,000.
The Good

The 2006 GMC Envoy offers robust performance thanks to its strong engine options, appealing to those seeking power. It provides a comfortable ride and spacious interior, satisfying practical needs. Its classic SUV design and available luxury features (like the Denali trim) add an emotional appeal, while its relative affordability on the used market enhances its value proposition.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2006 GMC Envoy include fuel economy, which is not a strong point. Owners should watch out for potential issues with the four-wheel-drive system, particularly the encoder motor. Also, some models have been known to experience electrical problems and issues with the suspension. Regular maintenance is key to mitigating these risks.

What Problems Does the 2006 GMC Envoy Have?

The 2006 GMC Envoy, like many vehicles of its age, has some frequently reported problems. One common issue involves the instrument panel cluster, where gauges may fail or become inaccurate. The four-wheel-drive system, particularly the encoder motor, is another area of concern, with reports of failure leading to inability to engage 4WD. Some owners have reported issues with the fuel gauge sending unit causing inaccurate readings. Electrical problems, such as issues with the power windows and door locks, are also noted. Suspension components, including the air suspension (if equipped), can wear out and require replacement. There have been recalls on the 2006 GMC Envoy, primarily related to safety issues such as brake light failure or potential fuel leaks. Long-term reliability can be affected by these issues, so thorough inspection and maintenance are essential. Owners should check the NHTSA website for specific recall information related to their vehicle's VIN. While specific model year variations in these issues aren't drastically different, earlier models in the Envoy's generation (2002-2004) generally exhibit a higher frequency of reported problems compared to the 2006 model.

How long will the 2006 GMC Envoy last?

With proper maintenance, a 2006 GMC Envoy can reasonably provide 200,000 miles or more of service. Many owners report reaching this milestone with regular oil changes, fluid checks, and timely repairs. However, long-term durability depends heavily on maintenance habits. Weaknesses over time include wear and tear on suspension components, potential rust issues (especially in areas with harsh winters), and the aforementioned electrical problems. Neglecting maintenance, such as failing to address oil leaks or worn suspension parts, will significantly shorten the vehicle's lifespan. Conversely, diligent care can keep an Envoy running reliably for many years.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2006 GMC Envoy's built-in tech and entertainment features were fairly standard for its time. It included a standard AM/FM radio with CD player; higher trims often featured a premium Bose audio system. Optional features included a rear-seat DVD entertainment system. Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles, primarily consisting of antilock brakes (ABS) and available traction control. Safety features included front airbags and side-impact airbags (optional on some trims). The 2006 Envoy received good crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings varied, but generally, the Envoy performed adequately in frontal offset crash tests. It is important to note that technology has evolved significantly since 2006, and the Envoy lacks modern features like rearview cameras, blind-spot monitoring, and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). Consider this when evaluating its safety compared to newer vehicles. Stability control became standard in 2006 adding to the safety equipment offered on the Envoy.

2006 GMC Envoy Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2006 GMC Envoy ranged from approximately $30,000 to $40,000 depending on the trim level and options. On the current used market, prices typically range from $3,000 to $8,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Envoy has experienced significant depreciation due to its age and the availability of newer, more fuel-efficient SUVs. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, maintenance records, mileage, and whether it's a desirable trim level (like the Denali). Models with lower mileage and a well-documented maintenance history command higher prices. Rust and mechanical issues significantly reduce resale value.

2006 GMC Envoy Cost of Ownership

The 2006 GMC Envoy is generally considered moderately costly to own. Insurance costs are typically average for a mid-size SUV of its age. Fuel costs can be high, especially with the V8 engine. Maintenance and repair costs can be significant due to the vehicle's age and potential for mechanical issues. Regular maintenance is crucial to prevent costly repairs. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on the vehicle's condition at the time of purchase and the owner's willingness to perform necessary maintenance.

2006 GMC Envoy Insurance

Insurance for a 2006 GMC Envoy is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2006 GMC Envoy Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2006 GMC Envoy competed with vehicles like the Ford Explorer, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Toyota 4Runner, and Nissan Pathfinder. Compared to the Explorer, the Envoy offered a similar level of performance and interior space, but the Explorer often had better reliability ratings. Against the Grand Cherokee, the Envoy provided comparable power but lacked the Jeep's off-road prowess. The 4Runner was known for its superior reliability, making it a stronger long-term choice. The Pathfinder offered a similar blend of features and performance, but the Envoy's styling was arguably more appealing to some buyers. In terms of price, the Envoy was generally competitive. If reliability is a top priority, the Toyota 4Runner is a better alternative. For off-road capability, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is superior. If you are on a budget and want something similar, an Acura MDX offers more features and reliability at a similar price point in the used market.

Final Verdict: Is the 2006 GMC Envoy a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2006 GMC Envoy is ideal for budget-conscious buyers needing a mid-size SUV with decent power and passenger space. It's worth buying *used* if you find one in good condition with a documented maintenance history and are willing to perform necessary repairs. The Denali trim offers a more luxurious experience but comes at a premium. Avoid models with known issues or signs of neglect. If reliability is a major concern or you need advanced features, consider alternatives like the Toyota 4Runner or Acura MDX. Getting a pre-purchase inspection from a trusted mechanic is highly recommended before buying any used Envoy.

Powerful and reliable, reasonable mpg.

The V-8 has ample power for this SWB truck, and great tow vehicle with 3.73 4x4. Low mileage for me but after 95k the only surprise was replacing the fuel-level indicator. Reading of potential AFM issues, I disabled this feature and found it does not impact fuel economy. Since disabling AFM, no longer has excessive oil consumption common with this 5.3.

The Envoy It’s a very comfortable and powerful SUV. The towing capabilities were perfect for our family getaway to the lake. The 4.2L V6 engine is powerful enough for the hills and straightaways. The marriage between the transmission and the engine was almost flawless. The convenience of the fold flat seats Made the cargo space Perfect for carrying practically anything. I highly recommend this vehicle to anyone looking for comfort, convenience, style and practicality! The safety features are abundant as well!

Lots of get-up and go for the Denali V8. Fun on the performance side. Ride is good. Seats are a little stiff and flat (for bucket seats). Nice ride height to see around cars in front of you. Easy in and out of the car. Narrow wheel base makes side-to-side swaying more noticable. Enjoy the Denali!

Most reliable car I've owned!

100% Reliable! I would absolutely recommend this vehicle to anyone interested! The 6-cylindar Vortec Engine was one of the best engines ever built! Very happy owner!

Reliable, comfy ride.

Starts easy, runs smooth. Never leaks or burns any oil. Transmission shifts smoothly. A/C works very well!! Heater too! Plenty of legroom and headroom for tall driver/passengers.

Excellant SUV!

Very smooth ride with lots of power and all the bells and whistles. I have owned for about two years and intended for it to be a keeper so I replaced everything that wasn't in good order. New AC compressor, brakes, tires and a complete tune up.

Worst car I have ever owned

Stuck with a car that had a weak spot in frame. 12 in long hole in main frame. Your cars are garbage. Worst place I have ever ever ever bought from. This news after entire front suspension needed work, all ball joints tie rods, control arms, a power steering line cracked damage hidden...an accident that was not on the Carfax. And a new transmission we had to replace not even 6 months after buying it. I can go on and on.. the trunk latch no longer works, wipers gone haywire.. . An electrical issue in dash. Dry rotted tires. ... GARBAGE. Take your money elsewhere. And words of wisdom kdk..i have i inspection report from two weeks after we purchased the garbage envoy..and many other inspections and reciepts of repairs all within 6 months. I can gladly post the many pieces of proof I have you sold me a lemon!!!
