Based on 24 Owner Reviews β–Ά
Simon A | March 31, 2025
The 2004 GMC Envoy is a mid-size SUV, part of the second-generation Envoy produced from 2002-2009. It was offered in a traditional SUV body style and an extended-length version called the Envoy XL. Key trims included the SLE, SLT, and Denali. Known for its comfortable ride and available V8 engine, the 2004 Envoy provided a blend of truck-like capability and passenger comfort. Original pricing ranged approximately from $30,000 to $40,000, but used models now vary widely.
The Good

The 2004 GMC Envoy offers a smooth, comfortable ride, appealing to those prioritizing comfort. The available V8 provides adequate power for towing and confident acceleration, satisfying performance needs. Its truck-based design gives it a rugged feel, while affordability on the used market makes it a practical choice for budget-conscious buyers.

The Bad

The 2004 GMC Envoy is known for potential issues with the four-wheel-drive system, particularly the encoder motor. Also watch out for potential problems with the air conditioning system and the instrument cluster. Fuel economy is also a common complaint, especially with the V8 engine. Rust can be a concern, especially in areas with harsh winters.

What Problems Does the 2004 GMC Envoy Have?

The 2004 GMC Envoy has several frequently reported problems. The four-wheel-drive system is a common area of concern, with issues often stemming from the encoder motor failing, leading to difficulty shifting in and out of four-wheel drive. The instrument cluster is also prone to failure, with gauges becoming inaccurate or ceasing to function altogether. Air conditioning problems, specifically with the compressor and refrigerant leaks, are also frequently reported. Some owners have reported issues with the fuel gauge sending unit. Rust, particularly in the undercarriage and around the wheel wells, is a long-term reliability concern, especially in regions with road salt use.

While specific recalls for the 2004 model year may have occurred, it's important to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for the most up-to-date recall information, as recalls can be issued at any time. General long-term reliability concerns revolve around the age of the vehicle and the potential for wear and tear on components like the transmission, suspension, and engine. Early models in the second generation (2002-2003) had more reported issues with build quality than the 2004 model, but preventative maintenance is key.

How long will the 2004 GMC Envoy last?

With proper maintenance, a 2004 GMC Envoy can realistically reach 200,000 miles or more. However, longevity heavily depends on maintenance habits. Neglecting fluid changes, ignoring warning lights, and infrequent servicing will drastically shorten its lifespan. Owners who adhere to the recommended maintenance schedule, address issues promptly, and avoid abusive driving can expect a longer service life. The transmission, if not properly maintained with fluid changes, can become a significant weak point over time. Regular inspections for rust and corrosion are also critical for long-term durability, especially in colder climates.

This is not a great looking car on the exterior but the ride and interior comfort are suitable. I would buy this car again.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2004 GMC Envoy featured a standard AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims offered premium audio systems, sometimes including a cassette player and rear seat audio controls. Tech was relatively basic compared to modern vehicles.

Driver-assistance features were limited. ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and traction control were standard, improving safety. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or adaptive cruise control available.

Safety features included front airbags, and available side-impact airbags. The Envoy also had a sturdy body-on-frame construction. Optional features included OnStar, providing emergency assistance and remote diagnostics.

Crash test ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) should be consulted for specific scores. These ratings typically assessed frontal and side impact protection. Note that safety standards have evolved considerably since 2004, so even good ratings at the time may not be comparable to those of modern vehicles. Checking archived NHTSA and IIHS reports is highly recommended for prospective buyers.

2004 GMC Envoy Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2004 GMC Envoy ranged from approximately $30,000 to $40,000, depending on the trim level and options. Today, used market prices vary greatly depending on condition, mileage, and location. Expect to find them anywhere from $2,000 to $8,000 or potentially even less for high-mileage or poorly maintained examples. Depreciation has been significant, as is typical for older vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, service history, and whether it has desirable options like the V8 engine or four-wheel drive. Models with documented maintenance and a clean title will command higher prices.

2004 GMC Envoy Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2004 GMC Envoy are generally moderate, reflecting its age and value. Fuel costs can be high, especially with the V8 engine. Maintenance and repair costs can be unpredictable. While routine maintenance is relatively affordable, unexpected repairs can be costly, particularly for the four-wheel-drive system or air conditioning. Long-term ownership can be more costly than a newer vehicle due to the increased likelihood of repairs and the lower fuel economy compared to modern SUVs. It's not the most economical vehicle to own.

2004 GMC Envoy Insurance

Insurance for a 2004 GMC Envoy is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2004 GMC Envoy Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2004 GMC Envoy competed against vehicles like the Ford Explorer, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Toyota 4Runner, and Nissan Pathfinder. In terms of performance, the Envoy's V8 engine offered comparable power to some rivals, but fuel economy was generally worse. Feature-wise, it offered a similar level of equipment to the Explorer and Grand Cherokee, but the 4Runner often had better reliability ratings. Price-wise, the Envoy was generally competitive when new, and on the used market, it can be more affordable than the 4Runner.

The Ford Explorer offered a similar driving experience, but had its own reliability concerns. The Jeep Grand Cherokee provided more off-road capability in some trims. The Toyota 4Runner, while more expensive on the used market, is often considered a more reliable choice. The Nissan Pathfinder offered similar features and capabilities at a comparable price point. Depending on priorities, a Toyota 4Runner (if reliability is paramount) or a Nissan Pathfinder (if budget is a major concern) could be considered better alternatives, but require more research and possible inspection before buying. A well-maintained Envoy can still be a decent choice at the right price, but buyers should be aware of potential maintenance needs.

Final Verdict: Is the 2004 GMC Envoy a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2004 GMC Envoy is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a comfortable, capable mid-size SUV. It's worth buying if found in good condition with a documented maintenance history and at a low price. Avoid examples with rust or signs of neglect. Specific trims are less critical than overall condition, though the SLT offers more features for the money. It's essential to have a mechanic inspect the vehicle before purchase, paying close attention to the four-wheel-drive system, air conditioning, and instrument cluster. A newer, more reliable SUV is recommended if budget allows, but a carefully selected and maintained 2004 Envoy can still provide years of service.

AWD 4WD/hi lo & 2WD

I live in Chicago where winter driving and conditions kill cars every year,That being said, I love the traction control the AWD in this is perfect I do not fear getting stuck or going to the store, actually enjoy the chance to drive while others just spin their tires. best vehicle I've ever had here. No hub locking in the cold either all drive options on the dash, switch on the fly all except 4WD Lo gear has to be done at very slow speed like walking speed.

Just bought it.

Just bought it with 67k miles on it. One owner before me, she had it bought new from the states. I live in the USVI so older cars like this with lower mileage are hard to come by. Engine runs smooth, quiet, and steady, and AC is ice cold. The ride is also very smooth, and the cabin is quiet. The cloth seats are very comfortable, and the features are adequate for the year of the car. It shifts steady and picks up speed very quickly. The only thing i can say with this vehicle is the dashboard has a crack in it, which could be because the sun here is so intense the UV rays probably made it brittle. Also the liftgate hinges are completely rusted, so much so that the liftgate is off centered and is a pain to close so I'm not using it until I get it fixed. And the biggest problem I think is that when i turn it off the engine does a little shake, it might need the motor mount replaced from what I have heard.

I feel like a queen in it

It's everything I want/need. I have owned one in the past and had to give it up for personal reasons. I got a Rav4 and it was a decent car, but certainly not in the same caliper as the Envoy. After 2 years, I found one I could afford. Said good bye to the Toyota and hello Envoy.
