The 2009 GMC Envoy is a mid-size SUV that was part of the Envoy's second generation (2002-2009). Available in SUV body style, it offered a blend of comfort and utility. Key trims included SLE, SLT, and Denali. When new, prices ranged approximately from $28,000 to $38,000. Its appeal stemmed from its truck-like capabilities combined with a more refined interior compared to some competitors, particularly the Denali trim with its upscale features.
The Good

The 2009 GMC Envoy offered decent performance with its available V8 engine. It provided a comfortable ride for daily commutes and longer trips. Aesthetically, the Envoy presented a rugged, yet refined design. For practical buyers, its towing capacity and cargo space were appealing. Emotionally, the Denali trim offered a sense of luxury and prestige.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2009 GMC Envoy include fuel economy, which is below average for its class. Some owners have reported issues with the electrical system, particularly with the door locks and windows. Rust can also be a concern, especially in areas with harsh winters. Regular maintenance is crucial to avoid costly repairs.

What Problems Does the 2009 GMC Envoy Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2009 GMC Envoy include issues with the electrical system, such as malfunctioning door locks, power windows, and instrument panel failures. Some owners have also reported problems with the transmission, particularly hard shifting or slipping. The four-wheel-drive system can also experience issues, leading to expensive repairs. Rust is another potential long-term reliability concern, especially in regions where road salt is used. Several recalls were issued for the GMC Envoy during its production run, addressing issues such as faulty windshield wiper modules, potential fuel leaks, and problems with the brake system. Check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for a comprehensive list of recalls and technical service bulletins (TSBs) specific to the 2009 model year. Some owners have also noted issues with the air conditioning system, specifically the compressor failing prematurely. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes and inspections, is essential to mitigate these potential problems and extend the vehicle's lifespan. Pre-purchase inspections by a qualified mechanic are highly recommended to identify any existing or potential issues.

How long will the 2009 GMC Envoy last?

With proper maintenance, a 2009 GMC Envoy can reasonably be expected to reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report reaching this milestone with regular oil changes, fluid flushes, and timely repairs. However, long-term durability hinges heavily on maintenance habits. Weaknesses that can emerge over time include rust, particularly on the undercarriage and body panels. Electrical components, like sensors and actuators, can also fail with age. Suspension components, such as shocks and struts, may require replacement. The transmission is another area that can show wear over time, especially if not properly maintained.

What's the deal?
So I've had this 09 GMC Envoy Denali for a week-long test drive. I haven't beaten on this car by any means, yet I've had to fill it up once already from E. Now the Car is half empty. So gas is terrible! The gas is worse than my Cadillac SRX V8, much worse and that car sucks on gas. Go figure. I like how the inside wraps around you, it is very geared toward the driver. The feel of the V8 is very responsive, great passing power. It's not a huge difference at all from the 4.2, however. This is my biggest problem . . . This car is an 09! It looks identical to the '02 model. This car has been out for 7 years now and still looks the same. Come on GMC! Think we can do something about that?

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 GMC Envoy's built-in tech and entertainment features were relatively basic compared to modern vehicles. Standard features typically included a CD player, AM/FM radio, and air conditioning. Higher trims, like the SLT and Denali, offered upgrades such as a premium sound system, dual-zone climate control, and available navigation.
Driver-assistance features were limited; antilock brakes (ABS) and traction control were standard. Electronic Stability Control was also available.
Safety features included front airbags, side-impact airbags (optional on some trims), and head-curtain airbags.
Crash test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) varied. While specific ratings should be verified with these organizations, the Envoy generally performed reasonably well in frontal crash tests. Side-impact protection was good with the optional side airbags. Rollover ratings were typically lower due to the SUV's higher center of gravity. Optional features included OnStar, which provided emergency assistance and vehicle diagnostics. Overall, the 2009 Envoy prioritized basic safety and entertainment over advanced technology compared to newer vehicles.

2009 GMC Envoy Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 GMC Envoy ranged in price from approximately $28,000 to $38,000 depending on the trim level and options. As a used vehicle, the 2009 Envoy's market value has significantly depreciated. Current used market prices typically range from $4,000 to $8,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. Depreciation is influenced by factors such as age, mileage, condition, and the overall demand for mid-size SUVs. Higher trim levels like the Denali may retain slightly more value due to their added features and perceived luxury. Vehicles with documented maintenance records and clean titles generally command higher resale prices.

2009 GMC Envoy Cost of Ownership

The 2009 GMC Envoy is generally considered moderately costly to own. Insurance costs are typical for a mid-size SUV. Fuel economy is below average, increasing fuel expenses. Maintenance can be moderate if kept up with diligently; however, repairs can be more expensive, particularly for electrical or transmission issues. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on the vehicle's condition and maintenance history. Neglecting maintenance can lead to significant repair bills, making it a less economical choice.

How Does the 2009 GMC Envoy Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2009 GMC Envoy competed with other mid-size SUVs such as the Ford Explorer, Toyota 4Runner, and Jeep Grand Cherokee. In terms of performance, the Envoy's V8 engine offered competitive power, but fuel economy lagged behind some rivals. Features were generally comparable, though the Toyota 4Runner offered a more rugged and off-road-focused experience. The Jeep Grand Cherokee provided a similar blend of on-road comfort and off-road capability. Reliability is where the Envoy falls slightly short; the Toyota 4Runner is typically considered more reliable. Price-wise, the Envoy was often competitive, especially on the used market.
Alternatives to consider include:
Toyota 4Runner: Known for its reliability and off-road prowess.
Jeep Grand Cherokee: Offers a good balance of comfort, capability, and features.
Ford Explorer: Provides a spacious interior and a range of engine options.
If reliability is a top priority, the Toyota 4Runner is a better choice. If a blend of comfort and capability is desired, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is a comparable alternative. For budget-conscious buyers, the Envoy can offer decent value if a well-maintained example is found.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 GMC Envoy a Good Wagon?

The 2009 GMC Envoy is ideal for buyers seeking a reasonably priced, capable mid-size SUV with truck-like qualities. It's best suited for those who need occasional towing capability and appreciate a comfortable ride. It's generally not recommended to buy a new one as they are no longer in production. Buying used can be worthwhile *if* you find a well-maintained example with a thorough maintenance history and a pre-purchase inspection. The SLT or Denali trims offer more desirable features. However, potential buyers should be aware of potential reliability concerns and be prepared for higher-than-average maintenance costs. Consider the Toyota 4Runner or Jeep Grand Cherokee if reliability is a higher priority.

Very comfortable ride and very dependable

This is my second Envoy. Bought the first one when they first came out in 2001 and sold it in 2011. Bought the second one in 2011 and I just listed it for sale. Thats 17 years of driving an Envoy and i was never left broke down on the side of the road. Great vehicle. Hope the Acadia can live up to that!

And At Last, My "New" Car

In almost 40 years of driving, I have owned only 5 cars, all of which have been General Motors vehicles, the most recent being a 1999 GMC Jimmy SLT. In fact, I still own a 1976 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Although the Jimmy has been extremely reliable, I felt it was time to begin looking, just in case! Years ago I began to look at the GMC Envoy as the next logical step up from the Jimmy and was very disappointed to have that model discontinued by GM. When I began my car search in earnest, I looked at the Envoy, in particular the 2006/2007 models. Also during this spell, I decided to branch out and also entertained the idea of purchasing a used Land Rover LR3. After much time looking for either vehicle, I found a beautiful 2009 GMC Envoy SLT which ticked all of the boxes. This car is great and a wonderful upgrade from the Jimmy. It has all the bells and whistles and is both comfortable and a joy to drive. It has 57k miles on it and came GM Certified, a nice bonus. I purchased an additional 3 year warranty to keep it in tip-top shape. It is a perfect choice for me and purchased at a great price from Sweeney Chevrolet in Youngstown, OH. I still drive the Jimmy now and then and my brother is planning on purchasing it from me. I am looking forward to many years with my "new" car.

2002 vs 2009

i had a 2002 envoy that i bought new back in 2001. i liked it so much that i drove it for 10 years and 118,000 miles and then traded to a used 2009 envoy. i had the 6 cylinder in both and think it is sufficiently powered. also had the bose stereo in both. i think the exterior styling is still good and will put it up against anything being made now. i think gmc could be still selling these if they had freshened things up a bit. had very few problems with the first one and hoping that this one is as good. seems strange to me that i had the first year and the last year they were made.
