Rating: 4.52
Based on 12 Owner Reviews
Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas marked VW's entry into the competitive mid-size SUV market. It's a three-row SUV designed for families. The Atlas was initially offered from 2018 onwards. Key trims include S, SE, SEL, and SEL Premium. Pricing ranged from the low $30,000s to the high $40,000s when new. It stands out due to its spacious third row and ample cargo space, making it a popular choice for larger families.
The Good

The 2018 Atlas offers a comfortable ride and spacious interior, appealing to practical buyers. Its bold design and available panoramic sunroof add emotional appeal. Performance is adequate for daily driving, and the value proposition is strong considering its size and features. While not the most fuel-efficient, it provides a decent balance.

The Bad

Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system and electrical components in the 2018 Atlas. Fuel economy can be lower than competitors, especially with the V6 engine. The transmission can sometimes feel hesitant. Potential buyers should also check for water leaks and ensure all recalls have been addressed.

What Problems Does the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas Have?

The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas has faced a number of frequently reported problems. One common issue revolves around the infotainment system, with reports of freezing, lagging, and general unresponsiveness. Some owners have also experienced electrical issues, including problems with the door locks, sensors, and the rearview camera. Water leaks, particularly around the sunroof and doors, have also been reported.

Regarding recalls, the 2018 Atlas has been subject to recalls concerning potential fuel leaks and issues with the airbag system. It's crucial to check if any outstanding recalls apply to a specific vehicle before purchasing.

Long-term reliability is a concern for some owners. While the Atlas is generally considered reliable, these initial problems raise questions about its durability over time. Some owners have also mentioned issues with the transmission, reporting hesitation or rough shifting. Addressing these potential issues through thorough inspection and proper maintenance is essential to ensure long-term reliability.

How long will the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas last?

With proper maintenance, a 2018 Volkswagen Atlas can realistically achieve 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. Regular oil changes, timely servicing of the transmission, and addressing any reported issues promptly are crucial.

Long-term durability can be affected by the reported issues, such as electrical glitches and water leaks, if left unaddressed. The longevity of the infotainment system is also a potential weakness. However, with consistent care, the Atlas can provide reliable service for many years.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas comes equipped with a range of tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. Standard features include a rearview camera system and a 6.5-inch touchscreen display (upgradable to an 8-inch screen in higher trims). Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility are available.

Available driver-assistance features include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and forward collision warning with autonomous emergency braking. Higher trims offer features like a panoramic sunroof, navigation, and a premium audio system.

Safety is a key focus, and the 2018 Atlas received positive crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA. It earned a "Top Safety Pick" award from the IIHS, indicating strong performance in crash tests. Optional safety features further enhance its safety credentials, making it a family-friendly choice.

While the infotainment system has been reported to have some issues, the overall suite of tech and safety features is competitive within its class.

2018 Volkswagen Atlas Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas ranged from approximately $31,000 for the base S trim to around $49,000 for the fully-loaded SEL Premium trim. Used market prices currently range from the mid-$20,000s to the low $30,000s, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level.

Depreciation is typical for the SUV class. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, maintenance history, and trim level. Models with lower mileage, a clean title, and a comprehensive service record tend to command higher prices. Demand for family SUVs also influences resale value.

2018 Volkswagen Atlas Cost of Ownership

The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas is moderately costly to own. Insurance costs are average for its class. Fuel costs can be significant, especially with the V6 engine. Maintenance and repair costs are generally in line with other European vehicles.

While not the most economical option, its spaciousness and features offer good value. Budgeting for potential repairs related to reported issues is advisable. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on maintenance and repair history.

2018 Volkswagen Atlas Insurance

Insurance for a 2018 Volkswagen Atlas is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle Vehicle?

The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas competes with rivals like the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, Ford Explorer, and Chevrolet Traverse. In terms of performance, the Atlas offers adequate power but isn't as sporty as the Explorer. Features are comparable, with the Atlas boasting a spacious third row, which is better than the Pilot's but similar to the Traverse's.

Reliability is where the Atlas lags slightly behind the Highlander and Pilot, which are known for their strong reliability records. The Traverse is similar in terms of reported issues.

Price-wise, the Atlas is generally competitive, sitting between the Highlander and Explorer. Alternatives to consider would be the Honda Pilot for its reliability and the Chevrolet Traverse for its generous cargo space. The Toyota Highlander remains a solid choice for its reputation for longevity.

If reliability is a top priority, the Highlander or Pilot might be better choices. However, if space and a more European driving feel are desired, the Atlas remains a viable option.

Ranks #1359 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas a Good Sport Utility Vehicle Vehicle?

The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas is ideal for families needing a spacious three-row SUV with ample cargo capacity. It's worth buying if you prioritize space and a comfortable ride over ultimate reliability.

Consider buying used, but ensure a thorough pre-purchase inspection to check for reported issues like electrical problems and water leaks. Opting for a higher trim, such as the SE or SEL, provides a better balance of features and value. Address any outstanding recalls before purchase. If reliability is a primary concern, explore alternatives like the Toyota Highlander or Honda Pilot.

VW Atlas is the best car so far with harsh winter!

I read lots of complaints about this VW atlas specially interior being plasticky bla bla. Other cars' interiors too are made of plastics. but hey if you want more Luxury; well better buy the Lamborghini Urus 🙂 . I still having fun with my used 2018 VW Atlas Execline. No problem at all. Some minor repairs but not a big deal. car is a car; every car has issues to deal with. I love my atlas bc its very roomy. my passenger has lots of leg room even on the 3rd row is very comfy for like 3-5 hr drive. We live in Central part of Canada so expect harsh winter weather. VW Atlas is perfect especially during winter "snow" mode is the best! During snow storm driving this VW atlas feels easy and relax. Heated seats and steering wheel included. I recommended this VW atlas to a friend and he's been happy and liking it too. so far so good.

Not worth it

Worst car I’ve ever owned 1 year into owning it the pulley went out. Then followed by the ac a few months later. Had it fixed and the back ac still doesn’t work. Fast forward to this summer gas gage goes out. Then coolant says it low but it’s not. Then it sounds the alarm that it’s over heating. Also a lot of the tech is on the fritz. It’s left us stranded twice in the 2 years I’ve owned it.

Might as well be a lemon

I am the second owner. The first flag should have been that the last owner sold it less than 2 years and 20k miles. The vehicle had several service appointments around 15k - "shift linkage repaired" and "front exhaust pipe replaced". The second flag: Four months after I got it, it was with the dealer for service for a month because the EPC light kept turning on and they couldn't get the fuel line part to fix it. They said it would become eligible for VW buy back and VW would reach out. They didn't. When I reached out to them, the dealer suddenly got the part and returned the car. The factory tires only survived for about 45k miles and then the steel belts started popping one after another. The third flag: At 67k, the EPC light starts coming on again. This time they say it's a fuel injector. At 81k, it's the check engine light, but similar behavior. Cylinder 2 misfire code, but they say there's no misfire it just needs a software update. Since VW has some of the lowest warranty mileage - 72k - they try and charge you for the software update! Looks like it's even worse on newer models! 50k now! It also turns out VW has a bunch of electronics hooked up to their 12v batteries like a hybrid or EV even though it's neither. Not possible to replace it yourself or the vehicle immobilizes. $450 for a simple battery replacement! I cannot recommend this car or brand to anyone.

Over 500 miles on a tank of gasoline

We sold the Tiguan and got the Atlas. It's so much more bang for your buck in the Atlas. We're averaging 27 mpg in the Atlas; we were only getting 29 in the Tiguan. The Atlas rides much smoother and the room is huge!!!

A great vehicle for me

This car is a wonder. With the rear camera., blind spot warning and lane assist i feel so safe. The cabin is spacious and not confining. Although I haven't had to use the 3d seat I am confident it is roomy and comfortable. Happy I bought it.

A great buy

I was getting a oil change at the VW dealership, The Atlas had just hit the sales floor. I saw her she saw me it was love at first site ! I took her home 2 months later she has bought much joy to my life. So roomy and rides so smooth. My GF has a Cadillac xt5 but wants to drive my car most of the time. My Atlas is much larger and rides better than he Caddy. She say her next car will be a atlas ...... BTW my Atlas cost about $18,000.00 than her Little Cadillac ,,, lol Put some Joy in your drive way and buy a Atlas.

Best SUV I’ve ever owned!

I drive this SUV to the mountains for skiing, fishing and hiking year round and the performance is unbeatable. It hugs the curves, and has plenty of power to climb the mountain and pass slow traffic. I drop the back 2 rows of seating and have 6 feet to store all my toys and gear.

Very happy with this family car

I leased this car because I needed a large 3-row car for my kids. The last 3 row suv I got was a horrible disappointment (and a lemon). This car has been great - especially for the price. With two young boys, I like the fact that this car is comfortable yet not SO fancy that I care when my boys are rough with it. Great family car that I plan on keeping and maybe even passing down to one of my kids in 8 years when he’s ready to drive!!
