2019 Volkswagen Atlas Review: Unreliable Midsize SUV With Expensive Repair Costs

Rating: 4.53
Based on 12 Owner Reviews
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2019 Volkswagen Atlas is a mid-size SUV, marking its second year in production after its 2018 debut. It caters to families needing spacious three-row seating. Key trims include S, SE, SEL, and SEL Premium. What makes the Atlas popular is its ample interior space, especially in the third row, and its user-friendly technology. Original pricing ranged from around $31,000 to $49,000.
The Good

The 2019 Atlas offers a comfortable ride and spacious interior, appealing to practical buyers needing room for family and cargo. Its straightforward technology and user-friendly design are also pluses. While not a performance vehicle, the V6 provides adequate power. The Atlas offers decent value, particularly for those prioritizing space over fuel efficiency.

The Bad

The 2019 Atlas's fuel economy is a known weakness, especially with the V6 engine. Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system and electrical components. Reliability can be a concern, with some reports of premature wear and tear. The base engine can feel underpowered when the vehicle is fully loaded.

What Problems Does the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas include issues with the infotainment system, such as freezing, slow response times, and connectivity problems with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Some owners have also reported electrical issues, including problems with the door locks, sensors, and warning lights. Another common complaint revolves around the climate control system, with some reporting inconsistent heating and cooling. There have been a few recalls for the 2019 Atlas, primarily related to potential fuel leaks and faulty airbags. Long-term reliability concerns center on the longevity of the infotainment system and the potential for increased maintenance costs as the vehicle ages. Some owners have experienced premature wear on brake components and suspension parts. It's important to check for service records and address any outstanding recalls before purchasing a used 2019 Atlas. Some model years have had reports of water leaks into the cabin, though this appears to be less frequent in the 2019 model compared to the initial 2018 release.

How long will the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas last?

With regular maintenance, the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas can reasonably be expected to provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-12 years of service. Adhering to the recommended maintenance schedule, including oil changes, fluid flushes, and timely replacement of wear items like brakes and tires, is crucial. Long-term durability may be affected by the quality of the infotainment system components and the potential for electrical issues. Addressing any emerging problems promptly can help extend the lifespan of the vehicle. Rust can also be a concern in areas with harsh winter conditions, so regular washing and waxing are recommended. Overall, the Atlas is reasonably durable, but some components may require attention over time.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2019 Volkswagen Atlas offers a decent suite of tech and safety features. Standard on lower trims is a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims boast an 8-inch touchscreen with navigation.
Entertainment features include a standard sound system, with an upgraded premium audio system available on the SEL Premium.
Driver-assistance features include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert (standard on SE and above), adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with autonomous emergency braking, and lane keep assist (available on SEL and SEL Premium).
Optional features include park distance control, park assist, and an overhead view camera system.
Safety features include standard airbags, anti-lock brakes, and electronic stability control.
The 2019 Volkswagen Atlas received good crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). It earned a "Top Safety Pick" award from the IIHS when equipped with specific headlights. NHTSA gave it a 5-star overall safety rating. These ratings indicate a strong level of occupant protection in the event of a collision.

2019 Volkswagen Atlas Prices and Market Value

The 2019 Volkswagen Atlas had a starting MSRP of around $31,000 for the base S trim, while the top-of-the-line SEL Premium trim could reach nearly $50,000 when new. Currently, used market prices for a 2019 Atlas range from approximately $20,000 to $30,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. The Atlas depreciates at a rate similar to other SUVs in its class. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, maintenance history, and any accidents. Models with desirable options and features, such as AWD and the V6 engine, tend to hold their value better. Color can also play a role.

2019 Volkswagen Atlas Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas are typically average for its class. Fuel costs can be high, especially with the V6 engine. Maintenance costs are generally moderate, although some repairs, particularly those involving the infotainment system or electrical components, can be expensive. Long-term ownership costs can be somewhat higher than average due to potential reliability concerns and the possibility of increased maintenance needs as the vehicle ages. Overall, the Atlas is not the most economical SUV to own, primarily due to fuel consumption and potential repair expenses.

2019 Volkswagen Atlas Insurance

Insurance for a 2019 Volkswagen Atlas is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle Vehicle?

The 2019 Volkswagen Atlas competes with the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, Ford Explorer, and Chevrolet Traverse. In terms of performance, the Atlas's V6 engine is adequate but not class-leading. The Pilot and Explorer offer more engaging driving experiences. Feature-wise, the Atlas provides a decent array of tech, but some rivals have more advanced driver-assistance systems. Reliability is where the Atlas lags behind the Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot, which have stronger track records. Price-wise, the Atlas is generally competitive. However, the Traverse offers similar space at a slightly lower price point.
Alternatives to the 2019 Atlas depend on priorities. If reliability is paramount, the Toyota Highlander or Honda Pilot are better choices. If performance is desired, the Ford Explorer is a strong contender. For budget-conscious buyers needing maximum space, the Chevrolet Traverse is worth considering. The Atlas excels in its generous third-row space, but other areas are more middle-of-the-road. It's a competitive vehicle, but not necessarily the best in any one category.

Ranks #1319 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas a Good Sport Utility Vehicle Vehicle?

The 2019 Volkswagen Atlas is ideal for families prioritizing spacious three-row seating, particularly a usable third row for adults. It's a good choice if user-friendly technology and a comfortable ride are important. However, it's worth buying only if you're aware of the potential reliability concerns and higher long-term ownership costs. Purchasing a used model with a comprehensive inspection and service records is recommended. Look for models with the V6 engine for better performance. Considering the Honda Pilot or Toyota Highlander might be wise if reliability is a top concern. The Atlas offers good value for its space, but potential buyers should weigh its pros and cons carefully.

I love this SUV!

This is my 2nd VW. My 1st was a 02 passat I bought in 2013. It was the most reliable car I ever owned. It has 230000 miles and still runs great! This Atlas takes things to a whole different level. The look, performance and features are world-class! The only knock I would have is the mpg is average at best. Only 20mpg on average. But overall it is a great vehicle for the price. The SEL trim is fully loaded. Whatever feature you could imagine, it has it. I hope to enjoy this vehicle for years to come.

Vw quality

I had a lincoln aviator but costs during COVID prompted a change to a less expensive model. This has a nice wide drives seat, accelerates and handles well. Its literally half the price of the aviator but 85% of the luxury. Thats a win for me.

Worst vehicle I've ever owned

I purchased this car after owning a Chevy Traverse. I have two kids so this was the perfect family vehicle - or so I thought. First thing I noticed was how jerky it drove. Accelerating from a stop the car shudders as it changes gears. VW told me "its because its an 8 speed transmission" Ohhh so that's why it drives like crap. Good excuse ok. Next the famous German engineering of this car is AWFUL. Why is there a perimeter around the rearview mirror that doesn't dim car headlights. so as you're driving you'll see flickers of bright lights in your eyes when they hit the non-dim perimeter. IDIOTIC. Next - periodically the gas pump will shut off only when achieving 3/4 tank full - convenient!! I also love when I'm driving with no cars near me and my car gives me a heart attack by blaring a BEEP in my face with a giant red warning on the dash that I'm going to get into a collision. Really? With who??? Also had to turn off the lane assist because it would randomly jerk my wheel into oncoming traffic to which VW tested and said it was fine. Next interior climate control - if you unsync the passenger seat from the driver, it turns off the rear heat/ac - its ok there's only kids back there they don't need any climate control ...WHAT? So many things about this car will leave you scratching your head like "Who designed this? Who thought this made any sense whatsoever" I haven't even owned this car a year, haven't even put 7K miles on it and I'm already looking to trade it in. Its been back to the dealer 3 times already, they had to replace the entire steering column, headlights etc... SAVE YOURSELF! You may read this and think to yourself "who is this girl, she probably just doesn't know how to drive the car" - don't think it!! This car is really as ridiculous as this review!! I swear it!!! I'm sorry I left you Chevy, I'll never turn my back on you again!!!

Everything I hoped it would be!

I’ve owned mostly VW’s and was excited to finally get into an Atlas as I was looking for something “roomy” but not huge like a Denali. I am 6’4” and have a large dog and often transport several bikes. The comfort factor is huge with me. I couldn’t be happier with the interior comfort and styling. I like the exterior styling too, but I feel the CrossSport (which wasn’t available when I leased my Atlas) is better. Performance wise, the V6 is adequate but I would appreciate a bit more horsepower. The biggest shortcoming for me is the brakes. They do not live up to the size of the vehicle. I previously owned a Toureg and am constantly comparing the two. The Toureg was much sportier and I do miss that car. But I really have no major complaints with the Atlas. 1 year and 10K miles in, I have had zero issues.
