2021 Volkswagen Atlas Review: Reasonably Dependable Midsize SUV With Higher Ownership Costs

Rating: 3.72
Based on 12 Owner Reviews
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas is a mid-size SUV designed for families, offering three rows of seating. Introduced in 2018, it quickly became popular for its spacious interior and comfortable ride. Key trims include the S, SE, SEL, and SEL Premium. The pricing range typically falls between $30,000 and $50,000, depending on the trim and options. Its generous cargo space and relatively user-friendly technology make it a standout choice in the competitive SUV market.
The Good

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas offers a comfortable and spacious interior, appealing to families needing practicality. Its smooth ride and ample cargo capacity are major draws. While not a performance leader, it provides adequate power for daily driving. From an emotional perspective, its stylish design and available premium features offer a sense of sophistication. Value-wise, it provides a good balance of features for the price.

The Bad

Some common complaints regarding the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas include its fuel economy, which is not class-leading. The base engine can feel underpowered when fully loaded. The infotainment system, while generally user-friendly, can sometimes be laggy. Also, some owners have reported minor electrical issues. Potential buyers should also be aware of the Atlas's size, which can make it challenging to maneuver in tight spaces.

What Problems Does the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Have?

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas has seen its share of reported problems, though nothing particularly widespread. Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system, including lag and occasional glitches. There have also been reports of sensor malfunctions related to the driver-assistance features. Certain model years, including earlier ones (2018-2019), had more complaints about transmission issues and water leaks, though the 2021 model is generally considered to be more reliable.

Recalls have been issued for various reasons, including potential issues with the fuel pump and airbag deployment. It's important to check the NHTSA website for the latest recall information specific to your vehicle's VIN.

Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the complexity of the vehicle's electronics and the potential for increased maintenance costs as the vehicle ages. Regular maintenance and addressing issues promptly are crucial for ensuring long-term reliability. As with any vehicle, a thorough pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended.

How long will the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas last?

With consistent maintenance, the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas can reasonably be expected to reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles, translating to roughly 10-15 years of service for the average driver. However, reaching these milestones relies heavily on adherence to the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule, including regular oil changes, fluid checks, and timely repairs.

Long-term durability can be affected by the quality of components, with potential weaknesses emerging in the electrical system and potential for wear and tear in the suspension and drivetrain components. Preventative maintenance is key to mitigating these issues and maximizing the vehicle's lifespan.

Overall I'm satisfying with the car I have no issue till now the car is running 55,000 mile over, still I don't have any major problem. The space is huge inside that car that is more satisfying even if you sit in the third row and adult person can sit comfortably.

Wanted something roomy and sporty looking and found it in the Atlas! Very sleek and smooth riding. My salesperson, Hector Enriquez, at Street Volkswagen is the best! This is my 3rd car to buy from him!

Negative Owner Reviews
Diwakar Krishnakumar
Horrible customer experience - they refused me a free service. As per the coupon validity, at the time I took it to the dealership, was still valid. I have the coupon with me now and I also have proof of a work order on the same date where they cleared some other faults on the vehicle, however refusing to "service" the vehicle.. Don't purchase these vehicle in the USA, they just might feel a little smooth, but if customer policy is not satisfying, everything else is crap. Does not make sense.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas boasts a range of tech and safety features. Standard features include a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system (upgradable to 8-inch), Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Higher trims offer features like navigation, a digital cockpit, and a premium audio system. Entertainment options include multiple USB ports and available rear-seat entertainment systems.

Driver-assistance features are plentiful, including standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Higher trims add adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, park assist, and an overhead view camera. These features enhance safety and convenience on the road.

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas generally receives good crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA. Specific ratings can vary based on the configuration (e.g., with or without specific driver-assistance features). The IIHS often awards the Atlas with its "Top Safety Pick" designation when properly equipped. Standard safety features include multiple airbags, anti-lock brakes, and electronic stability control. Optional features such as forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking further enhance safety.

2021 Volkswagen Atlas Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas had a starting MSRP of around $31,545, with higher trims reaching upwards of $50,000. As a used vehicle, prices vary depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. Expect to find them ranging from approximately $25,000 to $40,000 in the current used market.

Depreciation is typical for SUVs in this class. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, service history, and geographic location. Models with popular options like the panoramic sunroof and advanced safety features tend to hold their value better. High mileage and accident history will significantly reduce resale value.

2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas are generally average for its class. Fuel costs can be moderate to high, depending on the engine and driving habits. Maintenance costs are also fairly average, although unexpected repairs can be more expensive due to the vehicle's German engineering. Long-term ownership costs are likely to be moderate. It's not the most economical SUV to own, but it's also not the most expensive, striking a balance between initial price, features, and running costs.

2021 Volkswagen Atlas Insurance

Insurance for a 2021 Volkswagen Atlas is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas competes against the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, Kia Telluride, and Hyundai Palisade. In terms of performance, the Atlas's V6 engine is adequate, but the Highlander and Pilot may offer slightly more engaging driving experiences. The Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade often provide more features for the price, making them strong contenders in value.

Reliability is a mixed bag; the Highlander and Pilot have historically had stronger reliability reputations. The Atlas is generally good, but some owners have reported minor issues. The Atlas excels in interior space, offering a genuinely usable third row, which sets it apart from some rivals.

If reliability is a top priority, the Toyota Highlander is a strong alternative. If value and features are paramount, the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade are excellent choices. The Honda Pilot is a well-rounded option, balancing reliability and practicality. All offer similar levels of utility, so test-driving each is essential to see which best suits your needs.

Final Verdict: Is the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas is an ideal choice for families prioritizing interior space and a comfortable ride. It's worth buying if you value a spacious third row and don't mind slightly lower fuel economy. A used 2021 Atlas, especially in SE or SEL trim, offers a good balance of features and value. However, if reliability is your top concern, consider alternatives like the Toyota Highlander. Avoid base S trims if possible, as they lack some desirable features. A pre-purchase inspection is always recommended to ensure the vehicle's condition.

Horrible customer experience - they refused me a free

Horrible customer experience - they refused me a free service. As per the coupon validity, at the time I took it to the dealership, was still valid. I have the coupon with me now and I also have proof of a work order on the same date where they cleared some other faults on the vehicle, however refusing to "service" the vehicle.. Don't purchase these vehicle in the USA, they just might feel a little smooth, but if customer policy is not satisfying, everything else is crap. Does not make sense.

Overall I'm satisfying with the car I have no issue till now the car is running 55,000 mile over, still I don't have any major problem. The space is huge inside that car that is more satisfying even if you sit in the third row and adult person can sit comfortably.

We bought it with 20k miles off lease.

We bought it with 20k miles off lease. This car has been nothing but problem after problem from the start. Every issue I research and find out from the VW community that it's a common problem. The car leaks coolant. The water pump and oil cooler went out at 30k miles. Replaced an ignition coil at 40k miles. We've also replaced the airbag sensor which was a recall (not for our VIN... of course!). Integrated DRL on both sides are burned out which requires $3k for new headlamps. Just yesterday the hood latch cable broke and hood can't be opened. The interior is spacious which is nice, but there is no driver comfort. The body rolls move the driver all over the seat during turns. This car has tons of space which is great for large families and road trips, but be prepared to pay a fortune in repairs.

Below average

Stiff suspension, you will really feel every bump and dip in the road. The buttons on everything are super tiny and touch screen is not responsive as quickly as it should. The way you sit is weird, even on my husband the door panel is so tall it makes you feel like a little kid. When you fill up gas the door gets in the way if you're trying to get out. The windshield wipers don't keep up with the rain and overall the design of the interior is boring and uninspired. Also the engine shifting into gears is super jerky and sometimes revs for no reason. Doors are super heavy.

My Navy blue 2021 Atlas { leased]

VERY HAPPY with the car except for the embarrassing horn LOL and the fact that the car is smarter than I am technologically speaking. I'm learning new options all the time.

Atlas purchase

Wanted something roomy and sporty looking and found it in the Atlas! Very sleek and smooth riding. My salesperson, Hector Enriquez, at Street Volkswagen is the best! This is my 3rd car to buy from him!
