Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The Volkswagen Atlas, a mid-size SUV, entered the market to offer a spacious and family-friendly option. The 2022 Atlas maintains this appeal. It's a three-row SUV available in trims like SE, SEL, and R-Line. Pricing typically ranges from the mid $30,000s to the low $50,000s. Its generous interior space and comfortable ride make it popular among families needing ample room for passengers and cargo.
The Good

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas boasts a spacious and comfortable cabin, appealing to families. Its user-friendly technology and available all-wheel drive enhance practicality. While not a performance SUV, it provides a smooth ride. The Atlas offers decent value in its segment, balancing price and features, making it a sensible and comforting choice.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas include fuel economy, which is not class-leading. Some drivers find the base engine underpowered, especially when fully loaded. Reliability ratings have been mixed. Prospective buyers should carefully inspect the vehicle's maintenance history and consider an extended warranty for added peace of mind.

What Problems Does the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Have?

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas, while generally well-received, has experienced some frequently reported problems. Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system, including glitches, slow response times, and connectivity problems. Transmission issues, such as rough shifting or hesitation, have also been noted, although not widespread.

Certain model years, including earlier Atlas versions, faced recalls related to potential fuel leaks or electrical issues that could increase the risk of a fire or stall the engine. It's essential to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls before purchasing. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the electrical components and the potential for increased maintenance costs as the vehicle ages. Some reports suggest that the water pump and thermostat housing can be prone to failure. Owners should adhere to the recommended maintenance schedule and address any unusual noises or warning lights promptly to mitigate potential issues. Before buying a used 2022 Atlas, a thorough inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended.

How long will the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas last?

With proper maintenance, a 2022 Volkswagen Atlas can reasonably be expected to last for 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-13 years. Regular oil changes, timely servicing of the transmission and cooling system, and proactive replacement of wear items are crucial. The V6 engine tends to be more durable than the turbocharged 4-cylinder in the long run. Potential weaknesses over time include increased risk of electrical issues, suspension component wear, and potential for leaks in the cooling system. Following the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule is essential for maximizing longevity.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas comes equipped with a decent array of tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. The standard infotainment system includes a touchscreen display (6.5-inch or 8-inch, depending on the trim), Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto compatibility. Higher trims offer features like a navigation system, premium audio system (e.g., Fender), and multiple USB ports. Driver-assistance features typically include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Optional features include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and park assist.

Safety features encompass standard airbags, anti-lock brakes, and electronic stability control. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) should be checked for the specific model year and configuration, but the Atlas generally performs well in these tests. These ratings provide insights into the vehicle's ability to protect occupants in various crash scenarios. Overall, the Atlas offers a balanced suite of technology and safety features suitable for family use.

2022 Volkswagen Atlas Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas had an MSRP ranging from the mid $30,000s to the low $50,000s, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices vary based on mileage, condition, and location, typically falling in the range of the high $20,000s to the mid $40,000s. Depreciation is average for its class. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, maintenance history, and whether it's a popular trim like the SEL or R-Line. Lower mileage and a clean vehicle history report command higher prices.

2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas are average for a mid-size SUV. Fuel costs can be moderate to high, depending on the engine and driving habits. Maintenance and repair costs are generally average, but potential issues like electrical problems could lead to higher expenses. Long-term ownership costs are thus slightly above average. It's not the most economical SUV to own, but also not excessively costly compared to competitors. Budgeting for potential repairs is advisable.

2022 Volkswagen Atlas Insurance

Insurance for a 2022 Volkswagen Atlas is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas competes with the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, Kia Telluride, and Hyundai Palisade. In terms of performance, the Atlas is adequate but not sporty, trailing behind the Pilot and some V6-powered Highlanders. Features are comparable, with the Atlas offering a user-friendly infotainment system. Reliability is a mixed bag, potentially lower than the Highlander and Telluride. Price is competitive, falling in line with most rivals.

The Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade offer similar space and features with potentially better value and longer warranty. The Honda Pilot excels in performance and driving dynamics. The Toyota Highlander is known for its reliability. If reliability and fuel efficiency are top priorities, the Highlander is a strong alternative. If value and warranty are crucial, the Telluride or Palisade are worth considering. If driving experience is paramount, the Pilot might be a better fit. The Atlas remains a solid choice for those prioritizing interior space and a comfortable ride, but carefully weigh its strengths and weaknesses against the competition.

Ranks #1186 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas is ideal for families needing a spacious and comfortable three-row SUV. It's worth buying if interior space and a comfortable ride are high priorities. A used Atlas can offer good value, but a thorough inspection is crucial due to potential reliability concerns. The SEL trim provides a good balance of features and price. Consider the V6 engine for better performance, especially if you plan to frequently carry passengers or cargo. Carefully weigh its potential weaknesses (fuel economy, reliability) against its strengths (space, comfort) before making a decision.

At Last my ATLAS has come along!

Great car! Overpaid a bit; but, bought top of the line with only 23k miles. Loved it and didn't want to dicker over price. Rudes well. Acceleration is good. Roomy, spacious passenger cabin and cargo bay. Amazing technology. I recommend this vehicle highly. Take a serious look at this one. You wont be disappointed.

Love the size and room. Even the third row is roomy enough for 2 adults with headroom. Comfortable ride with good visibility. I’m enjoying the Atlas SE with v6 and 4 motion

New 2022

It’s a great car for a family. I have 2 toddlers, and the extra room is awesome. I love this care more than my 2020 Kia Sorento by far.

Nice but not quite great

I wish the salesman had spe t more than 10 mins rambling about the features, I would have known the voice control did not work and the air vent was broke. The USB ports are in the worst place possible. The cell phones will not charge on the charging pad. The shades inside the back doors, great idea IF it actually kept the sun out my childrens eyes. Honestly, I cannot tell much difference up or down. The space between the front seat and console is so close, if you drop anything wait till the car is fully stopped before retrieving lost item. If you still enjoy CDs, this is not the car for you. The (single) CD player is in the glove compartment. The car rides smoothly, has lots of leg room but I wouldn't recommend this to a friend. For the 44k price tag, keep looking.
