Rating: 4.12
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Simon A | March 31, 2025
The 2013 Dodge Avenger is a mid-size sedan produced by Dodge from 2008 to 2014. The 2013 model was part of the second generation. Key trims included the SE, SXT, and R/T. The Avenger aimed to offer a sporty alternative in the crowded sedan market. Its aggressive styling and available V6 engine were intended to set it apart. New, the pricing ranged roughly from $20,000 to $25,000.
The Good

The 2013 Dodge Avenger offers a blend of aggressive styling appealing to emotional buyers. Its relatively low price point provides good value for budget-conscious shoppers. The available V6 engine delivers decent performance, while the spacious interior provides adequate comfort. It’s a practical choice for those needing an affordable mid-size sedan.

The Bad

The 2013 Dodge Avenger is known for subpar interior quality with hard plastics and a somewhat dated design. The base engine can feel underpowered. Reliability has been a concern, so potential buyers should check for transmission issues, electrical problems, and suspension wear. The crash test ratings are also not the best in its class.

What Problems Does the 2013 Dodge Avenger Have?

The 2013 Dodge Avenger has faced several frequently reported problems and reliability concerns. Transmission issues are a common complaint, with some owners reporting rough shifting, slipping, or even complete failure. Electrical problems, including issues with the power windows, door locks, and the car's computer system, are also frequently mentioned. Suspension components, such as ball joints and struts, tend to wear out prematurely. Some owners have noted issues with the air conditioning system. Recalls for the 2013 Avenger included concerns related to the Occupant Restraint Controller which could delay deployment of airbags in a crash.
Long-term reliability is a significant concern. The Avenger generally doesn't hold up as well as some of its competitors over time, with more frequent repairs needed as the vehicle ages. Specific years, including 2013, have had a high number of complaints regarding engine and transmission problems. Therefore, a thorough inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended before purchasing a used 2013 Dodge Avenger.

How long will the 2013 Dodge Avenger last?

With proper maintenance, a 2013 Dodge Avenger can potentially reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles. However, this depends heavily on maintenance habits. Neglecting routine services like oil changes and transmission fluid flushes can significantly shorten its lifespan. Long-term durability is a known weakness. Issues with the transmission, electrical systems, and suspension tend to surface more frequently as the car ages. Rust can also become a problem in regions with harsh winters. Owners prioritizing regular maintenance can expect a longer service life, but potential buyers should be prepared for more frequent repairs compared to some competitors.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2013 Dodge Avenger's tech and safety features were fairly basic for its time. Standard features included a basic audio system with CD player and auxiliary input. Higher trims offered a touchscreen display with available navigation and satellite radio. Driver-assistance features were limited; rear parking sensors were an optional add-on.
Safety features included standard antilock brakes, stability control, and a suite of airbags (front, side, and curtain).
Crash-test ratings varied. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave the 2013 Avenger an overall rating of 4 out of 5 stars. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave it mixed ratings; it performed well in some tests but received a "Marginal" rating in the small overlap front crash test. Overall, its safety performance was not top of its class, especially compared to newer vehicles with more advanced safety technologies. Optional features included a premium sound system and automatic climate control.

2013 Dodge Avenger Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2013 Dodge Avenger had an MSRP ranging from approximately $20,000 to $25,000, depending on the trim and options. As a used vehicle, current market prices typically range from $5,000 to $10,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Avenger has experienced significant depreciation due to its age, reliability concerns, and competition from newer, more advanced models. Factors affecting resale value include the car's condition, maintenance history, mileage, and overall market demand. Well-maintained examples with lower mileage will command higher prices, but overall, the Avenger's resale value is relatively low.

2013 Dodge Avenger Cost of Ownership

The 2013 Dodge Avenger falls in the middle range for insurance costs. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially with the 4-cylinder engine. However, maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to potential reliability issues. Parts availability is generally good, but labor costs can add up. Long-term ownership can be more costly than some competitors due to the higher likelihood of repairs. While the initial purchase price is low, potential buyers should factor in the potential for increased maintenance expenses.

2013 Dodge Avenger Insurance

Insurance for a 2013 Dodge Avenger is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2013 Dodge Avenger Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2013 Dodge Avenger competed against mid-size sedans like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Ford Fusion, and Chevrolet Malibu. In terms of performance, the Avenger's V6 offered decent power but lagged behind some rivals in fuel efficiency. Feature-wise, it was generally less advanced, lacking some of the modern tech found in competitors.
Reliability is where the Avenger fell short, often ranking lower than the Camry, Accord, and Fusion. While the Avenger was typically priced lower than these competitors, the potential for higher repair costs offset the initial savings.
Alternatives to consider include the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord for their superior reliability and resale value. The Ford Fusion offers a more refined driving experience and better fuel economy. The Chevrolet Malibu is another option, offering a similar price point with potentially better reliability depending on the year. Overall, while the Avenger might be tempting due to its lower price, the alternatives often provide better long-term value and peace of mind.

Ranks #2146 Sedan

Final Verdict: Is the 2013 Dodge Avenger a Good Sedan?

The 2013 Dodge Avenger is ideal for budget-conscious buyers prioritizing affordability over long-term reliability and advanced features. It might be worth buying *used* if found at a very low price and after a thorough inspection by a trusted mechanic. Opting for the V6 engine offers better performance. However, buyers should be aware of potential maintenance costs and be prepared for more frequent repairs compared to other mid-size sedans. Alternatives like the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord are generally better choices for those seeking reliability and long-term value, even at a higher initial price point.

Best car I ever owned.

Bought the car w 30,000 miles, now at 109,000. Have had the car for 6yrs & only problem I've ever had was the radiator blew a few months after I got it. Other than that, absolutely love my car, it has plenty of room in the front & rear seating. Rides smooth. Couldn't have picked a better car. I will definitely get the same car but newer when it's time.
