2012 Dodge Avenger Review: Outdated Sedan That's Uncomfortable & Not Reliable

Rating: 4.27
Based on 71 Owner Reviews
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2012 Dodge Avenger, a mid-size sedan, aimed to offer a sporty alternative in its class. Produced from 2008 to 2014 (with roots tracing back to the Chrysler Sebring), the 2012 model offered trims like SE, SXT, and R/T. New, its price ranged roughly from $19,000 to $25,000. While not exceptionally groundbreaking, it appealed to buyers seeking a muscular design and a relatively affordable price point within the crowded sedan market. The Avenger provided an American-made option with aggressive styling.
The Good

The 2012 Dodge Avenger offered a muscular design that appealed to emotional buyers. The R/T trim delivered enhanced performance with a more powerful engine. A spacious interior and comfortable seating catered to practical needs. While not a benchmark, it provided a decent value proposition, especially in the used market, for buyers prioritizing affordability and styling.

The Bad

The 2012 Dodge Avenger faced criticism for its interior quality, which used many hard plastics. Reliability could be a concern, with potential issues involving the engine, transmission, and electrical systems. Road noise was also frequently mentioned as a drawback. Prospective buyers should carefully inspect the vehicle's history and condition before purchasing.

What Problems Does the 2012 Dodge Avenger Have?

The 2012 Dodge Avenger has several frequently reported problems and reliability concerns. Common issues include:
  • Engine Problems: Some owners have reported engine stalling, rough idling, and oil leaks. The 2.4L engine, in particular, has been associated with some of these issues.
  • Transmission Issues: Problems with the automatic transmission, such as rough shifting, slipping, and complete failure, have been reported.
  • Electrical Issues: Electrical problems are also fairly common, ranging from malfunctioning power windows and locks to issues with the car's computer system.
  • Interior Quality: The interior materials are often criticized for being low-quality and prone to wear and tear.
  • Recalls: Check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any recalls affecting the 2012 Dodge Avenger. Recalls have been issued for issues ranging from airbag malfunctions to problems with the fuel system.
Long-term reliability can be a concern, especially as these vehicles age. Regular maintenance and careful inspection are crucial to mitigating potential problems. Pre-purchase inspections by a qualified mechanic are highly recommended to identify any existing issues before buying a used 2012 Dodge Avenger. Early model years (2008-2010) had more significant issues, which Dodge tried to address in later years, but some concerns persisted through 2012.

How long will the 2012 Dodge Avenger last?

With proper maintenance, a 2012 Dodge Avenger can realistically reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles. Years of service heavily depend on maintenance habits. Regular oil changes, fluid checks, and timely repairs are critical. Long-term durability is a concern due to the aforementioned engine, transmission, and electrical issues. Rust can also become a problem in regions with harsh winters. Watch out for suspension component wear as well. Neglecting maintenance will significantly shorten the vehicle's lifespan.

Negative Owner Reviews

It's a good car runs well the inside has enough room good if you have kids i would buy one like this again it fits me well
Stacearelli
Pretty hott car, although issues after issues make it tough to stay positive about reliability. Trading in asap
Ski Chick
I live in Idaho where we experience a lot of snow. This car is horrible on the roads. It feels as though you are fish tailing all the time. Very hard to control the car. The car has new tires and the V6 liter engine (plenty of power on dry pavement). I have drove several front wheel drive cars in the snow and this is the worst. I feel very unsafe in this car. I am very upset since I love to ski....I won't drive this car more than 30 miles away from home in bad weather. I feel deceived; the sales person said it would do well on the roads and get me up to any ski resort. It does horrible on the highway I really doubt it will get up to the local ski resort. Please do not buy this car unless you live in a dry climate.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 Dodge Avenger's tech and safety features were fairly basic for its time. Standard features included:
  • Air conditioning
  • Cruise control
  • Power windows and locks
  • A four-speaker audio system with a CD player
Higher trims like the SXT and R/T offered upgrades such as:
  • A six-speaker audio system
  • SiriusXM satellite radio
  • Automatic climate control
  • A 6.5-inch touchscreen display with available navigation
Driver-assistance features were limited, with electronic stability control and anti-lock brakes being standard. Optional features included:
  • Remote start
  • Automatic headlights
Safety: Standard safety features included:
  • Front airbags
  • Side-curtain airbags
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)
Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA varied. While some tests yielded good results, others showed areas of concern, particularly in side-impact protection. The NHTSA gave the 2012 Avenger an overall safety rating of 4 out of 5 stars. Buyers should review specific crash-test results from both organizations before making a purchase. The Avenger lacked many of the advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) found in newer vehicles, such as blind-spot monitoring or lane-departure warning.

2012 Dodge Avenger Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2012 Dodge Avenger's price ranged from approximately $19,000 to $25,000, depending on the trim and options. As of 2024, used market prices typically range from $4,000 to $9,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Avenger has experienced significant depreciation due to factors like its reliability record, interior quality, and the availability of more modern and competitive sedans. Resale value is heavily influenced by condition and mileage, with well-maintained examples fetching slightly higher prices. The R/T trim, with its V6 engine and sporty features, may hold its value marginally better.

2012 Dodge Avenger Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2012 Dodge Avenger are generally average for a mid-size sedan. Fuel costs depend on the engine; the 4-cylinder is more economical than the V6. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to potential reliability issues. Parts availability is generally good and affordable. Long-term ownership costs can be moderate to high, depending on the vehicle's condition and the frequency of repairs. Overall, the Avenger is not the most economical car to own, especially if it requires frequent maintenance.

2012 Dodge Avenger Insurance

Insurance for a 2012 Dodge Avenger is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 Dodge Avenger Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2012 Dodge Avenger competed against rivals like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Ford Fusion, and Chevrolet Malibu. In terms of performance, the Avenger's V6 engine in the R/T trim offered decent power but didn't match the handling prowess of the Ford Fusion or the overall refinement of the Camry or Accord. Feature-wise, it lagged behind many competitors, lacking advanced technology and driver-assistance systems. Reliability was a significant weakness compared to the Camry and Accord, which are known for their dependability. While the Avenger was often priced lower than its rivals, the cost savings didn't always offset the drawbacks. For a more reliable and refined experience, the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord are better alternatives. If a sporty driving experience is desired, the Ford Fusion is a strong contender. Even the Chevrolet Malibu offered a more comfortable interior and better fuel economy in some configurations. While the Avenger might appeal to those prioritizing styling and affordability, its competitors generally offer a better overall package. The Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima also present viable alternatives with longer warranties and more modern features.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Dodge Avenger a Good Sedan?

The 2012 Dodge Avenger is suitable for budget-conscious buyers prioritizing aggressive styling over reliability and advanced features. It's arguably worth buying *used* only if found in excellent condition with a thorough pre-purchase inspection. The R/T trim, with its V6 engine, is the most desirable, but ensure it has been well-maintained. Avoid models with a history of engine or transmission problems. Given its age and potential reliability issues, a newer, more reliable used sedan from competitors like Toyota or Honda is generally a wiser investment unless a very low price and specific aesthetic are primary concerns. Consider it only as a temporary or secondary vehicle rather than a primary family car.

Bought the vehicle used with 90,000k.

Bought the vehicle used with 90,000k. At 147,000k now for 3 years. Mostly highway driving. Downsides...Bad battery placement, poor alternator design, had to replace due to the pulley clutch. My 4cyl. Is a dog; way underpowered. The main power and is around 4,000rpm. That's really pushing this little 4 banger. The engine struggles over almost any grade in the road, especially in cruse. There are huge blind spots at the rear A pillar. The unprotected wires for the airbag sensors under the seats cause the airbag light to come on. Now the upsides. Best looking sedan in it's class, hands down. Alloy wheels, steering wheel controls, lighted cup holders, clean interior. Relatively comfortable seats. Excellent gas mileage (23-28mpg). The 6 speed automatic transmission makes the dogish 4cyl make the car driveable, as well as the slap manual for shifting. The radio has a HDD drive that holds a gig of music storage. Excellent sound system. Large trunk, rear seat access through the armrest. Overall; with preventive maintenance, driving responsibly, and regular oil changes/tune-ups I would expect another 100,000k (knock on wood).

xxx Money pit made on a Friday

Complete junk. Was fast but everything just kept breaking. I was looking for an SUV but not finding anything. I got this 2012 Avenger. Boy, what a mistake ... vent door actuator was making noise first. I fixed that myself standing on my head. Then the gas gauge started sticking about halfway full. OK, fine, I can live with that, but it just kept getting worse. Three of the four wheel bearings failed AT THE SAME TIME and a caliper. Not long after that there was a ticking noise. The mechanic said it was the starter so we replaced that and it was still there. More $$$$ later its a cracked flywheel. xxx? In the middle of winter the heat starts only working on drivers side, then not at all . Yep, its the heater core! Normal mechanic wouldn't do it because it takes so long. So I took it somewhere else. $900 later I have heat .. but it gets better car. The car started dying and not going forward after backing up so I traded the xxx in the end.

Great everyday car

Given that it is 10 years old if given proper maintenance it will last well over 250k...expect to put in the basics along the way, but overall not a bad car especially for someone who can do minor repairs on their own.

I love this car

I've owned a 4 cylinder SXT for 8 years now and I'm very happy with it. I bought it at around 50k miles and now it's at 93k. I've never had a problem with it. It's been a very reliable car for me, and that's all I really needed it to be. Personally my favorite thing about this car is the way it looks. This is the best looking 4 door non-sports sedan you're going to find. It looks really nice on the inside too (the cup holders glow!), however it is worth noting this car has massive blind spots due to its interior design. I've let a few people drive my car and they always comment on this. I've personally experienced a much lower gas mileage than this car is rated for. I track these things and I get closer to 18mpg, and living in rural Iowa, I do more highway driving than city driving. While this car looks kind of muscle-y on the outside, if you have the 4 cylinder engine, it is anything but. People who have driven my car also comment about how hard the engine seems to have to work to get any acceleration. It is definitely not a problem (if you want performance, get a sports car), but it is noticeable to people who are used to other cars.

My first car and my last dodge.

I'm 17 years old I got this car w 173k miles the starter goes out 3k miles later transmission blows 6k miles later. And it was hogging a 1/2 of oil every 1k miles. So I junked it and bought a 2010 civic. Learned my lesson buying a dodge. Never buy one it's a money pit.

Great car, stinks in snow and ice

This car is generally pretty great, however when there is a tiny bit of snow on the ground you better hang on tight cause she will slip and slide all over the place. I do love my Dodge during the rest of the year though.
