The 2008 Dodge Avenger is a mid-size sedan that aimed to offer a sporty alternative in a competitive market. Produced from 2008 to 2014 (this generation), it came in trims like SE, SXT, and R/T. The Avenger's aggressive styling, reminiscent of its Charger sibling, was a key selling point. New, it ranged roughly from $17,000 to $24,000. Its bolder appearance distinguished it from more conservative rivals.
The Good

The 2008 Dodge Avenger offered appealing styling for emotional buyers. The R/T trim provided decent performance with its available V6 engine. For practical buyers, its affordability and spacious interior were attractive. However, reliability and fuel efficiency were not its strongest suits compared to rivals.

The Bad

The 2008 Dodge Avenger is known for below-average reliability. Watch out for transmission issues, electrical problems, and premature wear of interior components. Rust can also be a concern, particularly in areas with road salt. The base engine is underpowered, and fuel economy isn't stellar, especially with the V6.

What Problems Does the 2008 Dodge Avenger Have?

The 2008 Dodge Avenger suffers from several frequently reported problems. Transmission issues, including rough shifting and premature failure, are common. Electrical problems, such as malfunctioning sensors and issues with the car's computer system, are also frequently cited. Owners have reported premature wear of interior components like seats and dashboards. Rust, particularly in areas exposed to road salt, can be a significant long-term concern.

Recalls for the 2008 Avenger have included issues related to airbags and electrical components. Specific problems tied to the 2008 model year include complaints about the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM), which can cause various electrical malfunctions. Long-term reliability is a concern due to these issues, leading to higher maintenance costs and potential repair bills as the vehicle ages. Consumer Reports has consistently rated the Avenger below average in reliability. Overall, prospective buyers should carefully inspect any 2008 Avenger and be aware of these potential problems before purchasing.

How long will the 2008 Dodge Avenger last?

With proper maintenance, a 2008 Dodge Avenger can potentially reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or provide 12-15 years of service. However, its long-term durability is questionable due to known reliability issues. Regular oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and addressing minor problems promptly are crucial. Weaknesses over time include increased susceptibility to rust, electrical problems worsening, and potential transmission failure. Neglecting maintenance will significantly shorten its lifespan. Expect higher repair costs compared to more reliable competitors.

Great car I get a lot of complaiments on it, My main gripe is maintenance. Try and change the sparkplugs or better yet try and pay a mechanic to do it... $600!!!! EVERYTHING IS HARD TO WORK ON. Try and change the battery haha.... better yet try and pay a mechanic $400 for a battery change xxx??? Don't buy this car, Its beautyful but its really hard to work on and its a gas hog.

The 2008 avenger rt we bought new. We currently have 264,000 miles on it and is going strong ðŸ’Βͺ. My single complaint is: it is equipped with the 3.5 engine, and from date of purchase, it uses a quart of oil on 1,500 miles. I brought this to the dealers attention. Their response was: this is termed by the manufacturer, nominal oil use. Thus the oil is only changed at 6000 miles, as l feel it has already had an oil change, having added 4 quarts interm of the 6000 miles. I was also told: leave it alone as some motors, (find a level and maintain it). What a joke! Not this motor. I drove 2,500 miles and went back to the dealership, and their was not a drop in the end of the dipstick! Thus checking it regular, it runs strong. As for a motor warranty, that is sure a sore spot! As for the car totally, outside of the motor oil use, it is an excellent car!

The 2008 Dodge Avenger is your standard 4 cylinder sedan. The cars production came to a stop in 2014 when Chrysler basically replaced it with the Chrysler 200. I've had my 2008 Dodge Avenger for over two years now, and have had minimal problems with the car, but it can just simply be uncomfortable and sketchy. Sometimes, the car has a problem with switching gears, and the road noise is extremely loud in this car. I would recommend this vehicle to a new driver as they are fairly cheap and somewhat safe.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2008 Dodge Avenger's built-in tech and entertainment features were relatively basic for its time. Standard features typically included a CD player with AM/FM radio. Higher trims like the SXT and R/T offered upgraded audio systems, sometimes including a six-disc CD changer. Navigation was available as an optional feature on some models.

Driver-assistance features were limited; it lacked modern technologies like blind-spot monitoring or lane departure warning. Safety features included standard front airbags, side-curtain airbags (optional on some trims), anti-lock brakes (ABS), and electronic stability control (ESC).

Crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) varied. While it generally performed well in frontal crash tests, side-impact protection was sometimes rated lower. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) also provided crash test ratings, and it's recommended to check their specific reports for the 2008 model year. Overall, the Avenger provided adequate safety features for its era but lacks the advanced tech found in newer vehicles.

2008 Dodge Avenger Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2008 Dodge Avenger ranged from around $17,000 to $24,000, depending on the trim and options. As a used vehicle, prices now range from roughly $2,000 to $6,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Avenger has depreciated significantly due to its age, reliability issues, and competition from more desirable models. Factors affecting resale value include its mechanical condition, accident history, and overall appearance. Low mileage and a well-documented maintenance history can increase its value slightly, but overall depreciation is substantial.

2008 Dodge Avenger Cost of Ownership

The 2008 Dodge Avenger's long-term ownership costs can be higher than average. Insurance costs are typically moderate, but fuel economy, especially with the V6 engine, isn't great. Maintenance and repair costs can be significant due to the Avenger's reliability issues. Expect to spend more on repairs than with more reliable competitors. Considering potential repairs and fuel consumption, the Avenger is not the most economical choice for long-term ownership.

2008 Dodge Avenger Insurance

Insurance for a 2008 Dodge Avenger is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Passenger Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2008 Dodge Avenger Compare to Other Passenger Sedan?

The 2008 Dodge Avenger competed with mid-size sedans like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Ford Fusion, and Chevrolet Malibu. In terms of reliability, the Avenger lags behind the Camry and Accord, which have significantly better track records. The Fusion and Malibu offer comparable reliability, but often better fuel economy. Feature-wise, the Avenger was generally competitive, but its interior quality and design were often criticized compared to the Camry and Accord.

Performance varied; the R/T with the 3.5L V6 provided decent power, but the base engine was underpowered. The Camry and Accord offered smoother and more refined driving experiences. Price-wise, the Avenger was often more affordable than the Camry and Accord when new, but used prices reflect its reliability issues.

Better alternatives include the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, and Ford Fusion, which offer superior reliability and overall value. A similar alternative, but potentially with better reliability, could be the Chevrolet Malibu. If reliability is a key concern, the Avenger is generally not the best choice in its class.

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Dodge Avenger a Good Passenger Sedan?

The 2008 Dodge Avenger is ideal for buyers on a very tight budget who prioritize styling over reliability and are willing to accept potential repair costs. It might be worth buying only if found in exceptionally good condition with a thoroughly documented maintenance history and a very low price. The R/T trim offers the most appealing performance, but its fuel economy is the worst. Due to its age and reliability issues, purchasing a used Avenger requires careful inspection and awareness of potential problems. Newer, more reliable alternatives are generally recommended unless budget constraints are extremely limiting.

A car to cruise

I bought this car as used and the person before me most likely didn't took care of this car at all it has some rust but not terrible rust, the air works but for some reason the passenger side blow cooler air no matter what and I still haven't got a chance to see why, it has a oil change, a new Dipstick, good on gas between $15-25 and it's filled up for a while depending on how you drive but overall. This car is mostly for transportation to here and there I don't recommend to travel with this car.But I want to give this car to someone who can take care of this car way better than and if there's any other questions just let me know.

The Avenger was a suprise great buy for me!

This car has been a good buy for me. It was affordable, reliable, and fun to drive. There was some problems I had along the way with this car, like any car. I got this car at 132k miles. I had to replace the alternator, thermostat and fuel pump. Other than those three things it was just general maintenance I did on this car.
