The 2010 Dodge Avenger is a mid-size sedan that aimed to offer a sporty alternative in a competitive segment. Introduced in 2008 as a replacement for the Stratus, the Avenger spanned model years 2008-2014. Key trims included the SE, SXT, and R/T. New pricing ranged from around $19,000 to $24,000. It stood out with its aggressive styling, inspired by the Dodge Charger, hoping to attract buyers seeking a muscular-looking sedan at an affordable price point.
The Good

The 2010 Dodge Avenger's primary advantage was its aggressive, muscular design which appealed to emotional buyers. Practical advantages included its affordable price point and decent interior space. Depending on the engine choice, some models offered adequate performance. It provided a relatively comfortable ride for daily commutes, making it a reasonable value proposition for budget-conscious consumers.

The Bad

The 2010 Dodge Avenger suffered from below-average reliability, with potential issues in the powertrain and electrical systems. Interior materials were often criticized for their quality. What Problems Does the 2010 Dodge Avenger Have?

The 2010 Dodge Avenger has several frequently reported problems that prospective buyers should be aware of. One of the most common issues is related to the transmission, with reports of harsh shifting, slipping, and even complete failure. Electrical problems, including issues with the lighting system, power windows, and door locks, are also frequently cited. Oil consumption can be excessive in some engines, requiring frequent top-offs.
Recalls for the 2010 Avenger included issues related to the fuel tank, where a potential leak could increase the risk of a fire. There were also recalls concerning the airbag system. Long-term reliability is a concern, with many owners reporting premature wear and tear on various components. Specifically, the 2.4L engine is known to develop issues over time, and the suspension components are prone to wear. It's advisable to thoroughly inspect a used 2010 Avenger and obtain a pre-purchase inspection from a qualified mechanic to identify any potential problems before buying. Checking the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls is also essential.

How long will the 2010 Dodge Avenger last?

With proper maintenance, a 2010 Dodge Avenger could potentially reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles. However, due to reported reliability issues, many may require significant repairs before reaching those milestones. Regular oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and timely replacement of wear items are crucial.
Long-term durability is a weakness. Issues like rust, especially in areas with road salt, can be a problem. Engine and transmission issues are also more likely to appear as the vehicle ages. Suspension components, particularly struts and bushings, often require replacement. Electrical gremlins can also persist, leading to ongoing maintenance needs.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2010 Dodge Avenger's tech and entertainment features were fairly basic for its time. Standard features included a CD player with MP3 compatibility and an auxiliary audio input jack. Higher trims offered features like a six-speaker sound system and satellite radio. Navigation was available as an option.
Driver-assistance features were limited. ABS and stability control were standard. Optional features included remote start and a security system.
Safety features included front and side airbags, along with anti-lock brakes.
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) varied. It generally received four out of five stars for frontal crash protection and five stars for side crash protection. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave it mixed ratings, with "Good" ratings in some categories and "Acceptable" in others. Overall, the Avenger's safety performance was adequate but not exceptional compared to its rivals. The limited driver-assistance technology also made it less competitive in terms of modern safety standards.

2010 Dodge Avenger Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2010 Dodge Avenger ranged from approximately $19,000 to $24,000, depending on the trim and options. In today's used market, a 2010 Avenger typically sells for between $3,000 and $7,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location.
The Avenger has experienced significant depreciation due to its reliability issues and less desirable reputation compared to competitors. High mileage, accidents, and lack of maintenance records further negatively affect resale value. The vehicle's age is also a major factor in its reduced price. Overall, the 2010 Dodge Avenger has poor resale value.

2010 Dodge Avenger Cost of Ownership

The 2010 Dodge Avenger is moderately costly to own long-term. Insurance costs are average for its class. Fuel costs are acceptable, especially with the 2.4L engine, but can be higher with the V6 options. Maintenance and repair costs are where the Avenger becomes expensive. Its reliability issues mean more frequent repairs, potentially leading to significant expenses over time. Parts availability is generally good, but labor costs can add up. Overall, due to potential repairs, it's not the most economical choice.

2010 Dodge Avenger Insurance

Insurance for a 2010 Dodge Avenger is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2010 Dodge Avenger Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2010 Dodge Avenger competed against vehicles like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Ford Fusion, and Chevrolet Malibu. Compared to these rivals, the Avenger falls short in several areas.
Performance: The Avenger's performance was adequate, but the Camry, Accord, and Fusion offered better handling and more refined engines.
Features: The Avenger's features were generally comparable, but rivals often offered more advanced technology and driver-assistance features.
Reliability: This is where the Avenger significantly lagged behind. The Camry and Accord are renowned for their reliability, while the Fusion and Malibu also generally fared better than the Avenger.
Price: The Avenger's lower price point was one of its main selling points. However, the long-term cost of ownership, due to potential repairs, could negate any initial savings.
Alternatives: The Toyota Camry and Honda Accord are significantly better choices due to their superior reliability and resale value. The Ford Fusion also offers a more compelling package with better handling and available features. While the Chevrolet Malibu is another option, it is similar to the Avenger in some respects.

Final Verdict: Is the 2010 Dodge Avenger a Good Sedan?

The 2010 Dodge Avenger is ideally suited for budget-conscious buyers who prioritize styling over reliability and refinement. It might be worth considering if you find one in excellent condition with a comprehensive maintenance history and a very low price. However, it's crucial to get a pre-purchase inspection due to known reliability issues.
A used Avenger, particularly the R/T trim with the more powerful V6, could be appealing to someone seeking an affordable, sporty-looking sedan. However, be prepared for potential repairs. Overall, there are many better choices in the mid-size sedan segment offering superior reliability and long-term value. Unless the price is exceptionally low, alternatives are generally recommended.

Ride or Die type of car

My 2010 Dodge Avenger Sxt V6 is an absolute blessing at 234,000 miles. This is a ride or die type of car. I have only had to do basic maintenance. I cannot explain how dependable and overall how great this car is. I understand some are better than others, but I have driven this car nonstop, including back and forth to Cincinnati from Indianapolis over a matter of 3 years every weekend, and this car still amazes me to this day. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Watch out and things to know.

Bought brand new. 77700 miles lighting bolt comes on and had to replace mother board. 2 yr warranty. 2 are up and need to replace again. If not replaced car will stop running in traffic and mid way through intersections. Complained to the NTSB about the dangers this can cause. No reply. 77700 miles seriously. This car is dangerous. So you'd better think twice about used 2010 dodge avenger.

Great car, only spent a grand to fix in 3 years

So I went from a 2002 Honda accord to a 2010 dodge avenger. Pros a lot roomier, nicer interior and exterior. Cons even though it got a lot more horses. It's way slower for some reason, it doesn't have that extra boost. And it eats a lot more gas, even though specs are 25 combine. More like 22 mpg, I felt that if I gas the Honda, it was a lot funner to drive and longer time to gas up. Even though the Honda was older no recalls and I paid more, only because I blew up the engine twice and transmission once. But on the dodge it kept dying on me, I spent a grand change everything. It did get recall and I took it in, but it's only died on me a couple more times. I can't afford a new one. But I don't mind buying another dodge, charger that is. This one is boring to drive and too slow.
