The Good
The 2000 Mazda Protege offered a blend of sporty performance and practicality. It was known for its responsive handling, making it fun to drive. Reliability was generally good, appealing to practical buyers. Its compact size made it fuel-efficient, while the stylish design (for its time) and available features like a sunroof catered to those seeking a bit of flair.
The Bad
The 2000 Mazda Protege had some weaknesses. Rust, particularly in colder climates, was a common issue. The automatic transmission could be problematic, requiring careful maintenance. The interior materials were basic and prone to wear. Also, some owners reported issues with the air conditioning system. Regular inspection is crucial.

Analysis
What Problems Does the 2000 Mazda Protege Have?
Air conditioning issues, such as compressor failure or refrigerant leaks, are also common. Electrical problems, including issues with sensors and wiring, can occur. Engine issues such as oil leaks and valve cover gasket leaks are relatively common as the car ages. Suspension components like struts and bushings wear out over time, affecting handling.
While Mazda has a decent reputation for reliability, the age of the 2000 Protege means that deferred maintenance and wear and tear will be significant factors. Check for any recalls related to safety or emissions, although many of these would have ideally been addressed years ago. Specific model year nuances are less pronounced than overall aging concerns.
How long will the 2000 Mazda Protege last?
Long-term durability hinges on consistent maintenance. The engine is generally robust, but neglecting oil changes will shorten its lifespan. Rust remains a major enemy, especially in areas with harsh winters. The automatic transmission is a potential weak point if not properly serviced. The interior plastics tend to degrade and become brittle over time. Overall, diligent care is essential for extending the vehicle's lifespan.
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Safety features generally consisted of dual front airbags, seatbelts, and possibly anti-lock brakes (ABS) as an option, especially on higher trims like the ES. Power windows and locks were also available on LX and ES trims. Optional features could include a sunroof, upgraded audio system, and alloy wheels.
Crash test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) should be consulted for specific safety performance. Generally, it performed adequately for its time, but safety standards have evolved considerably since then. The side impact protection was not particularly strong compared to modern vehicles. Keep in mind these ratings are relative to other cars of the same era.

How Does the 2000 Mazda Protege Compare to Other Sedan?
Reliability was a mixed bag. The Corolla and Civic typically enjoyed better long-term reliability reputations. The Protege could be reliable, but the automatic transmission and rust issues were concerns. Price-wise, the Protege was often slightly more affordable than the Civic and Corolla when new.
Alternatives to the 2000 Mazda Protege could include a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla for greater long-term reliability, although these might command a higher price on the used market. The Ford Focus offered a similar level of sportiness but could have reliability issues. For a balance of reliability and affordability, a well-maintained Nissan Sentra could also be considered. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual priorities and the condition of the specific vehicle being considered.

You get what you pay forIβll admit the low milage drew my attention as Iβm sure it will for you, but thatβs the cars only redeeming quality, thereβs rust seeping under the car, irregular motor patterns, interior below average, dripping oil; donβt waste your time.

This car was a great buy for the owner. This car served the owner well. It was purchased by a retired person so the mileage is very low. The inside is very clean for a used car.

Best car ever madeI bought my 2000 Mazda Protege from the second owner. The Protege had 152,000 miles on it and had been maintained but with no real repairs. I have had this car now as a daily driver for 5 years. At 187,000 miles I have had no repairs. Just routine maintenance such as oil changes, belt, hoses, tires, etc.. I find the car has a lot of pep but best of all the gas mileage is INCREDIBLE! I get 28 MPG in the city and 41 MPG on the highway. I was talking to another owner of the same vehicle and they had 320,000 miles with no major repairs. Built to last and loads of run to drive. It reminds me of a Porsche. I especially like the low body, tall glass, cab forward design similar to the older Ferraris. I will keep it until it stops running which means I will probably have it for the rest of my life. The guy that sold it to me stops by every year to whine about how he wished he had not sold it.

Most reliable car I've ever ownedI got this car with 92k on it and have put another 15k on it during the two years I've owned it. Car has needed nothing but regular gas and regular oil changes (every 4k miles). I've driven it every way possible and it has never given me a problem. Car has always started right up and never let me down. For a 17 year old car it blends it with everything on the road quite nicely and the interior although basic, is functional and well laid out. This is the kinda car you can beat on and it will just keep going.

Odometer 256,000 and countingMazda makes a heck of a product, and it just keeps going (though I just replaced my first starter at 256,000 miles). The difference between the Protege and the newer MAZDA3's is definitely comfort - I tried a 2011 3 and didn't even bother test-driving it as my head was scraping the cabin ceiling (I'm only 5-11!). The 2009 3 (just before the 2010 redesign) is much better. In the search for aerodynamics every manufacturer seems to content to squeeze people into their cars with very little room, giving a whole new, negative meaning to the word "compact." The 2000 Protege is a compact with midsize comfort.
