Analysis
What Problems Does the 2002 Mazda Protege Have?
Recalls could vary depending on the specific production date and region. Check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any recalls specific to the VIN. Long-term reliability concerns primarily revolved around rust prevention and regular maintenance of the automatic transmission and suspension. Proper rustproofing and timely fluid changes could significantly extend the vehicle's lifespan. While generally reliable, neglecting these areas could lead to costly repairs. There weren't significant differences in problems reported by model year within the 1999-2003 generation.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Safety features included standard front airbags. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) were optional on some trims. Side airbags were not a common option.
Crash test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA were generally acceptable for the era. However, safety standards have improved significantly since then. Check the specific model year ratings for detailed information.
Optional features varied by trim but could include air conditioning, cruise control, power windows and locks, and upgraded audio systems. The Protege5 hatchback sometimes included a sunroof or upgraded wheels. Overall, the tech and safety features were basic compared to modern vehicles.

How Does the 2002 Mazda Protege Compare to Other Hatchback?
Alternatives to consider include the Honda Civic (known for reliability and resale value), Toyota Corolla (ultra-reliable and fuel-efficient), and Ford Focus (offering a wider range of body styles and good handling). The Mazda Protege5 is similar, it's another Mazda protege trim level that delivers performance. While the Protege offered a fun driving experience, the Civic and Corolla may be better choices for long-term reliability and resale value, especially if driving enjoyment isn't the top priority. The Ford Focus offers a diverse range of models but can have reliability issues.

Fun to Drive and MoreI owned the es 2.0 from 175,000 km to 210,000, only problems were rusty exhaust elbow which I had to replace, and EGR valve causing low idle. I cleaned it out with some carbon cleaner and a screwdriver and it ran like new! I think it will have lots of life left if maintained with care.

One of the most fun to drive and most reliable carI owned and ES from new for 15 years and loved this car. Just sold it 11/17 with only 58k miles on it. My wife and I were sad to see it go. Need higher seating was the only reason to part with it.

It was an awesome little car.I loved it, it was fun to drive except in rush hour cause of it being a manual transmission other then that it was awesome cause it had the get up and go that my previous car did not have.

Good for A to B drivingNot the prettiest, but not the worst looking. I would drive it if I were able, but perhaps at a later time.

Definitely a reliable car. This car has been in my family since 2005. It was used for childhood trips and we never had any problems with it. As expencted with a 15 year old car the mechanics of the car are old and kind of worn but this car still gets me wherever I need to go without any problems

Great first carCar runs great. It has a decent amount of power which makes it fun to drive. It handles well and is enjoyable to drive. It's not the most stylish but it's great for your kids when they first start driving. Super dependable. I would recommend.

Most reliable car I ever ownedWe bought this car new almost 15 years ago and have had no unexpected problems short of a few plastic parts that have cracked. Very inexpensive to replace what parts have needed replacing. This car has spent its entire life outside and used on short daily commutes in stop and go traffic. I will keep this car until the wheels fall off if that ever does happen!

LOVE ITI fell in love with the car as soon as I laid my eyes on it. It was my first car. Bought it at 52k miles and got a great deal, so normally I think that something was wrong with it. But there wasn't, thankfully. I never want to get rid of it. Gets AMAZINGG gas mileage. I recommend this car to everyone. You WON'T be disappointed.
